Many people are fascinated by Romania, and in part, it has to do with Bram Stoker’s famous novel Dracula. The story of the vampiric monster continues to repel and fascinate us, and many places in Romania have capitalized on this by linking elements of their architecture or local customs to the legendary creature. If you want to have the full Dracula experience in Romania, check out these hints and tips.

Stay In A Traditional Home

Avoid modern apartments and buildings and try to stay in an authentic and traditional home. The beautiful architecture and old-fashioned techniques will really help you to feel like you’ve traveled back in time. This is particularly effective if you’re visiting in fall or winter when the wintry weather can make you feel very grateful for the warmth and comfort of your accommodation.

Visit in the Fall

Whilst the Dracula-themed attractions will be open year-round, if you want those spooky vibes visit Romania in the fall. The myth, folklore, and history of this country mean that you can sense that every town and village is steeped in storytelling and memory, and the hauntingly beautiful landscapes help to increase the sense of mystery and suspense.

Visit Bran Castle

Whilst many sites will claim a connection with Dracula, none are quite so impressive as Bran Castle, situated not far from the city of Brasov. This beautiful building has, in reality, no connections with Stoker or the myth of Dracula, but it’s worth the visit for its stunning architecture and incredible history. The tourist industry has made the most of supposed connections, so expect to see plenty of Dracula-themed stalls outside, but this doesn’t detract from the overall experience.

Mysterious medieval castles are the first thing that comes to mind when someone mentions Romania, but the natural landscapes of this country are equally breathtaking. Here’s a couple of beautiful lakes you should see if you ever pay it a visit.

Lake Tarnița

Cluj-Napoca is one of the most popular cities with tourists visiting Romania, and you should make sure to plan a day trip to this beautiful lake while you’re there.

Red Lake

Red Lake was formed in a natural dam after a devastating earthquake in 1838. It became extremely popular with locals and tourists alike, thanks to its pleasant microclimate, fresh air, and wind-free environment.

Lake Vidraru

Vidraru is an artificial lake on the Argeș River, but that doesn’t take away from its beauty. Its picturesque mountain setting in the shadow of the Fagaraș Mountains, known as the Transylvanian Alps, makes it worth the visit.

Bâlea Lake

Bâlea Lake is also located on the slopes of the Fagaraș Mountains, and it’s one of Romania’s most popular natural landmarks. Several rustic chalets are located near the lake, and so is the first ice hotel in Eastern Europe.

The incredible mountains of Romania were always a popular vacation spot for locals, but when the British show Top Gear shot a special in Romania, the Transfagarasan highway quickly became famous. Some people have dubbed it “the best drive in the world”, and rightfully so.

Most people access the drive from Romania’s biggest city, Bucharest. The entire drive can be done from Bucharest and return on the same day, but this will be a long, tiring day and it is best to split it up to two or three days to get the most out of the great experience.

Most of the highway is closed during winter, as the middle part has a very high elevation and lots of snow. The typical opening months are mid-June to mid-October, but it changes from year to year so make sure to research it before you start the trip!

The highway is famous for its incredible switchbacks and green, lush mountains. There are plenty of places to pull over if you want to take pictures, so take your time going around the many steep bends.

You can also stop in unique cities like Brasov, home of Bran Castle, the famous castle that inspired the making of Dracula!

There’s no better way to celebrate Halloween than exploring spooky medieval castles in Count Dracula’s home country. Fortunately, Romania has more of them than we can count, and these three can be visited during a single trip.

Peles Castle

This property sits in the very heart of the Carpathian Mountains, and it was built as a summer residence for the Romanian Royal Family. It features around 160 rooms, each one more lavish than the other, decorated in a different style or theme.

Bram Castle

Commonly known as Dracula’s Castle, this Transylvanian fortress once belonged to the famed author of Dracula – Bram Stoker. It’s one of Romania’s most popular landmarks, and every horror lover already has it on their bucket list.

Corvin Castle

This Gothic-Renaissance castle in Hunedoara also comes with a pretty dark backstory. According to the legends, it was the place where Vlad the Impaler was held as a prisoner. He later served as inspiration for the character of Dracula due to his reputation for cruelty.

Romania is a country with a rich history and lots of myths and legends. The country’s many of the landmarks all astonishingly beautiful. Here are some places you would love to pay a visit.

Bran Castle

Also known as the castle of Count Dracula, Bran Castle is an amazing building. Surrounded by forest that gives a mystic touch, this castle is up on a rock and wows with its exterior. The interior is not all dusty and vampire-like, on the contrary – it’s filled with historical pieces from Queen Mary of Romania.

Salina Turda

Who would have thought that a salt mine can be an amusement park? Turns out, it’s a great spot for bowling alleys, ferris wheels, and rowboats. This former salt mine was a bomb shelter during WWII and it’s located 400 feet underground. There’s still salt in the air so visiting this place is not only fun but also good for your health.

Constanta Casino

This grand building will leave you breathless the first time you’ll see it. Laying on the shore of the Black Sea, this Art Deco site is surrounded by mystery and will give you the chills.

🇬🇧 Have you missed me? I've never NOT posted for two full weeks before since I started with Instagram 1.5 years ago. But I was super occupied with a super cool freelancing opportunity that I was doing over the last two weeks and so I decided to stop using Instagram during these two weeks. Actually it wasn't difficult at all for me – how about you? Would it be difficult for you to stay off the grid for two weeks? . . . . . . #experienceromania #exploreromania #beautifulromania #hunedoara #hunedoaracastle #românia #transilvania #transylvanien #transylvania #visitromania #romaniapitoreasca #romaniamagica #corvincastle #castelulcorvinilor #visithunedoara #fernweh #fernwehsarah #fernwehsarahpresets #castle🏰 #castles_oftheworld #castlesoftheworld #castlesofeurope #beautifuleurope #ladiesloveeurope #girlstravelfix #girlstravelling #journeyofgirls #travelette #worldofwanderlust
