]]>When he first started constructing it in 1958, Casapueblo simply served as Vilaró’s summer house and workshop, but it grew in scale and vision as the years went by. The eccentric artist even claimed he built it without any plans and later used the words “livable sculpture” to describe it.
You don’t have to be a traveling expert to notice that Casapueblo looks pretty familiar. Its whitewashed cement and stucco walls draw clear inspiration from the buildings in Santorini, but it was also inspired by the shape of hornero nests since this happens to be the most Uruguay’s most common bird species.
Casapueblo is located in Punta Ballena, just 15 kilometers from Punta del Este, and there are now a museum, an art gallery, a café, and a lavish hotel on its premises. If you’re here to check out its museum, keep in mind its working hours are limited, and you can only visit it between 12:30–8:30 PM on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays.

]]>Punta del Este owes its enormous popularity to its beautiful beaches, classy hotels, and close proximity to some of Uruguay’s most popular tourist attractions. Uruguay is relatively small when compared to other South American countries, so it’s pretty easy to reach this resort town, especially if you’re traveling from Montevideo.
The city’s most recognizable landmark is La Mano de Punta del Este, a giant hand sculpture located at the Brava Beach. This is just one of many beautiful beaches in this resort town, and Mansa Beach and El Emir Beach are equally beloved.
In order to experience Punta del Este in its full glory, you’ll have to embark on a short road trip outside the city. Gorriti Island is a popular day-trip destination, and most tourists try to check out the abstract building complex Casapueblo in Punta Ballena, just 13 kilometers from Punta del Este.

]]>If you decide on a beach trip to Uruguay in the near future, here are three beaches that you absolutely must check out.
Punta del Este is Uruguay’s most famous beach destination, and my favorite beach to visit in Punta del Este is Playa Brava. A huge stretch of sand that’s calm and popular with surfers due to its occasionally strong waves, you can get the best of both worlds in Punta del Este at this beach.
The sea is calm and the beach is full of soft sand at Playa Neptunia, a beautiful spot located at the discharge of Pando Creek into the Atlantic Ocean. Crowds are small here, meaning that it is one of Uruguay’s best beaches to simply relax at.
Just a few miles from the Brazilian border is Playa del Rivero, one of southeast Uruguay’s most popular beach destinations. Frequented by both Uruguayans and Brazilians, you’ll find a friendly company and a scenic setting at this pretty beach.

]]>A small country of only 3.5 million people, Uruguay is one of the most peaceful and pleasant countries on Earth. If you’re looking for a relaxing getaway to a little-known place, it might just be the place for you.
If you’re looking for a city to explore, Uruguay’s capital is the beautiful city of Montevideo. One-third of the country’s total population lives here, with a population of just over 1,000,000. The city’s old town hosts an impressive collection of colonial architecture including the stunning Teatro Solis.
In addition, Montevideo is located on the ocean, meaning that it’s blessed with many beaches. It’s easy to escape from the busy city center by walking on the seaside Rambla to explore the city’s beaches.
Another great Uruguayan city to visit is Punta del Este. Uruguay’s top resort city hosts beaches like Brava Beach. It’s possible to see “The Fingers of Punta del Este” here, a gorgeous public art sculpture made by Chilean artist Mario Irarrázabal.
Uruguay is waiting to be discovered. If you’re looking to relax and take a load off, visit this country!
