The medicinal properties of plants have been healing us for millennia. All over the world, the weird and wonderful flora of this planet has looked after us and treated our diseases and ailments. Here are four medicinal plants from around the world that you’ve got to see.

Gingko

This ancient tree has lived in China for around 270 million years. Today, it is best known to treat brain diseases such as Alzheimer’s and dementia. But it is also effective at relieving the symptoms of anxiety and depression, promoting bone healing, and reducing inflammation.

Turmeric

Native to India, the well known bright orange turmeric root is excellent at reducing the inflammation of the joints, arthritis, treating skin conditions, and preventing cancer and some genetic conditions.

If youโ€™re experiencing inflammation or about to undergo surgery, then this Ginger and Pineapple Anti-Inflammatory Smoothie is a great recipe to have on-hand as part of your recovery protocol. Why do we love it? ๐ŸPINEAPPLE fruit contains a mixture of sulfur-containing proteolytic enzymes known as bromelain. Bromelain and the consumption of whole pineapple has an anti-inflammatory effect and may speed recovery following traumatic injuries. โœจGINGER rhizome may improve neuralgic pain and inhibit inflammatory enzyme systems. Ginger is also settling to the stomach, calms gas, and has an antispasmodic and warming effect. โœจTURMERIC rhizome contains the yellow-pigmented anti-inflammatory known as curcumin. Curcuma extracts are useful for inflammatory conditions including arthritis, trauma, and inflammation that is secondary to infection. ๐Ÿ๐Ÿฅฅโœจ๐Ÿงก GINGER AND PINEAPPLE ANTI-INFLAMMATORY SMOOTHIE RECIPE Fresh turmeric root is increasingly available at the produce department of groceries and may be used instead of the dry powder where available. Yield: 3 liquid cups. INGREDIENTS ๐Ÿ 2 cups (200 g) fresh pineapple ๐Ÿ 1 cup (250 mL) coconut water ๐Ÿ 1 tablespoon ginger root, peeled ๐Ÿ 1โ„2 teaspoon turmeric powder DIRECTIONS Combine all the ingredients in a blender and puree. Transfer the blend to a large glass and enjoy! To use, prepare 1 or 2 anti-inflammatory smoothies per day and continue for a week or more post-surgically or in other situations where anti-inflammatory support is needed. This recipe was shared with us from โ€œHerbal Formulas for Health Professionals, Volume 4โ€ by Dr. Jill Stansbury and reprinted with permission from @chelseagreenbooks. ๐Ÿ˜˜ ๐Ÿ“š Read more in-depth instructions in our accompanying blog post. . . . . #pineapple #ginger #turmeric #antiinflammatory #smoothie #smoothierecipe #herbalsmoothie #healthyeating #cleaneating #herbalrecipe #myherbalstudies #herbalacademy #herbalist #herbalism #materiamedica #botanicals #plantmedicine #herblove #herbalmedicine #artofslowliving #motherearth #naturesmedicine #loveyourweeds #backtoourroots #herbalists #plantlove #herbarium #herbstolove #medicinal #hebier

When camping on vacation, taking advantage of fruits and plants growing around you is a great way to enjoy sustainable travel. Of course, it’s important to be aware of what plants to avoid. Here is a list of some of the more dangerous foliage to watch out for when traveling.

If you are worried about consuming anything you are unsure of, seek medical advice immediately.

Ricinus Communis AKA the Castor Oil Plant

Indigenous to the Mediterranean, Eastern Africa, and India, this plant can now be found all over the world in tropical climates. It is the current holder of the Guinness Book of World Records for the worldโ€™s most poisonous plant.ย A lethal dose would be 4-8 seeds, creating a burning sensation in your mouth and throat.

Hippomane Mancinella AKA Manzanilla de la Muerte (little apple of death)

What looks like a tasty fruit on a Manchineel tree, is definitely an apple that you want to avoid – unless you are a tortoise (as they regularly snack on these fruits). The fruit will make your mouth burn straight away. The tree is so toxic, it also produces a white sap, that if comes into contact with your skin, will cause a severe allergic rash. Definitely not a good place to take shelter from a rain storm! This tree can be found in South America and the Galapagos Islands.

Abrus Precatorius AKA Rosary Pea

Native to Indonesia, these black, red or white beads are often used in percussion instruments. Although attractive to look at, the seeds contain abrin, which is fatal to humans. It reacts with the body in a similar way to castor seeds.

Water Hemlock

Water Hemlock is native to North America and can be found in many of its wet areas. It is a tricky one because it looks like the leaves of carrots and parsnips, but it contains a killer substance. The cicutoxin concentrated in its roots can result in sickness and convulsions.

Wisteria

Wisteria is a beautiful flowering plant that can be found all over the world. Despite its attractive flowers, the entire plant is poisonous. If ingested, it can cause nausea, diarrhea and high fever. It’s great for photos, but best not to touch.

Jardim Botanico, Brazil

This botanical garden in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, is an incredible feat. Within it, there are over 6,500 species of plants, and it was originally created in the early 19th century as a way to introduce different plants and herbs to Europe. Now it’s used for a lot of research in Brazil, but also as a wonderful place to see all the gorgeous plants and birds that live in it.

Royal Botanic Gardens, England

Kew, England is home to one of the most fabulous indoors botanical gardens in the world, and is, in fact, the largest botanical gardens in the world. With more than 30,000 types of plants within the greenhouses, you will never find a collection like that anywhere else in the world! One of the greenhouses are even listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is only one of three with that title in the world.

Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden, South Africa

Cape Town, South Africa has another botanical garden listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site as well! The Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden is especially different because there are only native plants in the garden, which is really special.
