So, you’re thinking about hitting the road (or the skies) with your furry best friend? That’s awesome! But, as you’ve probably guessed, it comes with some challenges. From navigating airline policies to packing, there’s a lot to consider. Let’s dive into some key tips to keep your travel buddy happy and safe.

Understand the Regulations

Before planning your trip, research the pet regulations and requirements of your destination. This includes pet entry regulations for different countries, states, or cities, and accommodation policies. Airlines also have their own set of rules for pet travel, including breed restrictions, carrier dimensions, and documentation like health certificates and vaccination records.

Plan for Breaks and Exercise

Pets need regular breaks to stretch, eat, and relieve themselves. When traveling by car, plan to stop every 2-3 hours. For air travel, choose direct flights when possible to minimize stress and transit times for your pet. Always have a leash and collar with ID tags on your pet during breaks.

Pack a Pet Travel Kit

Lastly, prepare a travel kit for your pet that includes food, water, bowls, waste bags, grooming supplies, medication, and a first-aid kit. Also, pack their favorite toys or blankets to give them a sense of familiarity and comfort. And don’t forget water!

For pet parents, the idea of leaving their fur babies when they go away can be extremely hard. The good news is that some airlines do permit small animals to travel onboard. So if you’re planning to jet off with your pup, kitty, or another domestic animal, these are the best airlines to take.

Delta Airlines

Delta allows pets on both domestic and international flights, provided that they meet specific age requirements. All pets must be at least 10 weeks old for domestic flights, 16 weeks old for flights to the U.S. from another country, and at least 15 weeks old when flying to destinations in the EU.

Southwest Airlines

Little vaccinated dogs and cats are welcome aboard Southwest, as long as their carrier can fit under the seat in front. Although only one pet is permitted per carrier, two pets of the same breed can be in the same kennel if they are both able to stand up and move around inside.

Frontier Airlines

If you’d like to transport more unusual pets, Frontier is your friend. In addition to dogs and cats, rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, and household birds can also accompany passengers in the cabin on domestic flights. Soft-sided carriers are preferred, and food and water cannot be given to your furry friend during the flight, sadly.

Bringing your dog along on your travels or relocation may be a unique experience, but it requires some preparation, especially if you and your four-legged friends will board a plane. Here are a few things to remember so both you and your dog will be as calm and comfortable as possible during the journey.

Talk to Your Vet

The first step before flying with your pet is to schedule an appointment with your veterinarian to make sure your dog is fit and healthy to fly. If you get the go-ahead, make another appointment close to your departure date. Some airlines require a health certificate issued within 10 days of your flight.

Know Where Your Dog Will Be Seated

In the event that your dog can’t travel in the cabin with you, the airline will seat your pet in the cargo. That can be a stressful experience, so it’s important to keep your dog’s comfort a priority. Inquire about the temperature control in the cargo unit, and outside too. If your dog is elderly or has health issues, it’s necessary that they sit in the cabin.

Acclimate Your Dog to the Carrier

If you plan on moving your dog around in a carrier, purchase it in advance and start getting your pet used to the space. To help your dog develop a positive association with the carrier, feet them in for several weeks leading up to your flight.

Traveling with pets isn’t easy, but it is necessary if you are moving to a new country or going away for a long time. There are a few tips and tricks to make sure that your pet has the best travel experience possible. It all starts with pet-friendly airlines.

Tip 1: A Health Check

Older pets do not travel as well as younger pets. That means before you make the big decision to take them on a plane they should have a health check with their vet. Your vet will let you know if your pet is up to the journey or not.

Tip 2: Research Airlines

Some airlines are well-regulated when it comes to transporting pets. They ensure that a dog is walked in-between flights, regularly checked on, and always have enough food and water in their pet carriers. Reading reviews of fellow travelers, who have used the pet transport service will give you a good idea of who you want to care for your faithful companion.

Tip 3: Contact Airlines

Regulations for pet travel can change, and you want to ensure that all the airlines you are flying on adhere to them. They may also vary by country, which means the care your pets receive may not be to the standard you would like. Talk to a service agent, and discuss your pet’s individual needs. You will get a feel for how the airline regards pets, and their car. Then you can use your judgement, and choose the best airline for you and your pet.

Now you and your pet can jet off into the sun!
