The Columbia River Gorge, split between the northwestern U.S. states of Oregon and Washington, is one of the most scenic and beautiful natural areas in this region of the country. Following a route that runs 80 miles through the cascade range, this canyon is up to 2,000 feet deep and provides a spectacular range of views. While the gorge is beautiful in and of itself throughout its entirety, make sure to visit these three special spots on your trip there.

Multnomah Falls

On the Oregon side of the river, you will find Multnomah Falls, the most famous spot in the gorge. This waterfall cascades a total of 627 feet down from the mountains to the Columbia River and provides two incredible lookout spots at which you can marvel at the area’s beauty.

Beacon Rock State Park

Moving over to Washington, Beacon Rock State Park is another one of the gems of the Columbia River Gorge. 32 miles east of Vancouver, a massive basalt volcanic plug rises 848 feet above the river and the area around it provides beautiful hiking trails and spots from which to see both the river and the namesake rock.

Bonneville Dam

This man-made structure in the river was built in 1934 and protects the surrounding region from flooding in the area’s rainy conditions. You will marvel at the scope of the structure and the force with which the water pours through it from the idyllic meadows on either side of the river.

Like many major American cities, Portland is known by several different nicknames, but one of them stands out above all else. Oregon’s largest city is often referred to as “the city of roses” and many of the city’s top spots are dedicated to this beautiful flower.

The backstory behind this popular nickname is pretty easy to explain. Due to its convenient location in the marine west coast climate region, Portland is the ideal place for growing roses. This industry has been on the rise since the late 19th century, and the nickname “the city of roses” came into use around that time.

It was first used during the Episcopal Church convention in 1888, and the founding establishment of the International Rose Test Garden truly cemented Portland’s status as “the city of roses”. This garden is now home to an impressive collection of over 10,000 rose bushes of 650 different varieties, and it’s one of the city’s most visited tourist spots.

Portland is also a host to the annual Portland Rose Festival, and there are several more rose gardens you can explore during your visit to this city. Some of the city’s top attractions are either named after or pay homage to roses, including Rose City Park neighborhood.

The buildings in the park were handcrafted from wood and old trees, which gives the place a genuine, whimsical vibe. It’s not a surprise that kids love it, but it’s also a favorite of many parents and grandparents who enjoy reliving their childhood memories.

As for the current Covid-19 pandemic, the park stays open but the officials have posted some warnings on the website. “If you are experiencing any COVID-19 symptoms, please visit the park another day to protect both yourself and others,” they write. “If you are in a high-risk group (senior citizens and people with underlying medical conditions), we recommend you wait to visit until the danger of COVID-19 is over or there is is a vaccine.”

Otherwise, this Oregon park is a perfect place to get away from the realities of life and live in a fairy tale for a day. The address is 8462 Enchanted Way SE, Turner, OR 97392.

If you love all things retro, Portland is one of the places you should visit at least once in a lifetime. Oregon’s largest city also happens to be surrounded by many beautiful natural wonders—including Multnomah Falls.

Multnomah Falls is the tallest waterfall in the state of Oregon and one of the best day trip destinations you can visit while in Portland. It’s located on Multnomah Creek in the Columbia River Gorge, about 30 miles outside of Portland.

This waterfall has been popular with tourists for decades, and Multnomah Falls Lodge was built to accommodate the visitors all the way back in 1925. The surrounding area is just as equally breathtaking, and many nature lovers come here to enjoy stunning views of the Columbia Gorge.

Pathways and a viewing bridge, named after Simon Benson who commissioned it, make the visit to Multnomah Falls even more epic. If you’re lucky enough to visit it when weather conditions are good, you can also enjoy a hike to the top that will make you appreciate the beauty of this waterfall even more.

Portland Japanese Garden

This traditional Japanese garden covers 12 acres of Portland’s Washington Park and it’s been around since the late 60s. You can explore eight garden spaces built in Japanese style during your visit, and use this time to connect with nature and experience peace.

Lan Su Chinese Garden

Every foodie enjoys trying delicacies of local cuisine in each new city they visit, but every once in a while, we all need a taste of something familiar. Donuts fall under that category, but that shouldn’t stop you from trying new local flavors – and Portland offers an abundance of them.

Voodoo Doughnut

If you can only visit one donut store in Oregon’s largest city, make it this one. Voodoo Doughnut was the first spot to serve colorful, whacky donuts in this city, and everyone else followed suit.

Blue Star Donuts

If you’re in the mood to try some delicious gourmet donuts while in Portland, make sure to check out this Instagram-friendly spot, which can also be found in Los Angeles.

Pip’s Original

Pip’s signature mini donuts aren’t as over the top as some other you can find in Portland, and they come with a limited number of toppings, but that doesn’t make them any less tasty.

Doe Donuts

Doe Donuts may look pretty ordinary at first glance, but one thing that makes them special is the fact they’re fully plant-based, and the best possible options for vegan travelers.

The Pacific Northwest state of Oregon is a sort of Mecca for craft beer lovers. The burgeoning industry saw at the end of the 20th century and the first decade of this century a number of nationally-recognized breweries start in the Beaver State, and some of them are still in operation to this day.

Planning a trip to Oregon for beer lovers is like planning a trip to Italy for pasta lovers: there’s so much to see and try! Try to add these three breweries to your list, however, on your next trip to Oregon.

Full Sail Brewing Company: Hood River

Full Sail, located in the small town of Hood River, is a small, independent brewery that offers up daily tours by request of its beautiful installation overlooking the Columbia River Gorge. This brewery has a history, as well, as it was the first craft brewery in the region to bottle its beer.

Deschutes Brewery: Bend

Head south and inland and you’ll find yourself in Bend, the home of Deschutes, one of Oregon’s most highly-acclaimed breweries. Favorites such as its Black Butte Porter and Mirror Pond Pale Ale can be sampled in its drafthouse after a tour of the facilities.

Ninkasi Brewing Company: Eugene

The college town of Eugene is a strong point for the state’s craft beer scene, with Ninkasi being its most-beloved brewery. This microbrewery is all about an enjoyable, relaxing vibe, and the one-hour tour offering of its “brewing campus” is a great wait to spend some time in the home of the University of Oregon.

If we had to choose, the state of Oregon in the northwestern United States just might be the most beautiful in the entire country. Its endless beauty reflects a massive diversity of nature that stretches from its eastern desert plains to the verdant Pacific coast on its west side.

Now, choosing one favorite spot in Oregon is pretty difficult, but it might just be Multnomah Falls for me.

Scenically located in the Columbia River Gorge in northwest Oregon, just south of the border with Washington, visitors can see one of the United States’ most stunning waterfalls up close and personal in an accessible location.

This two-tiered waterfall has a total height of 620 feet, with a scenic and picturesque footbridge traversing Multnomah Creek between the two tiers. Only a short walk from a parking area, it’s possible to see and reflect on the wonder of this natural marvel from here.

However, those who are in shape and looking to do a little climb can also make the hike to the top of the falls! Two miles of steep switchback climb separate you from reaching the top of the falls and seeing a new perspective of the landmark as well as a panoramic view of the Columbia River Gorge.

In short, Multnomah Falls is an absolute must for any visitor to Oregon. It is truly a sight that must be seen to be believed.

If you’re a nature lover exploring Portland, you’ll never run out of amazing gardens and parks to check out. Nature happens to be the city’s most popular tourist attractions, and here are a few you should see at least once in a lifetime.

If you ever find yourself in Portland’s Chinatown, this is one of the top spots you should check out. Inspired by the famous classical gardens in Suzhou, Lan Su Chinese Garden houses 400 species of indigenous Chines plants and several water-side pavilions.

International Rose Test Garden

Portland is known as the City of Roses, and this garden is one of the reasons why. It’s home to over 10,000 rose bushes of 650 different varieties, and an estimated 700,000 visitors come here to admire them every year.
