Five and a half years have passed since the devastating fire at the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris on April 5, 2016. Restoring the 850-year-old landmark to its former glory will take plenty of work, but it has recently been announced that Notre Dame is on track to reopen to the public in 2024, in time for the Olympic Games in Paris.

The securing of the cathedral from further damage has been completed on schedule, according to a statement released by the organization responsible for its conservation and restoration. “We’re officially saying that the cathedral is now saved, that it’s solid on its pillars, that its walls are solid,” said General Jean-Louis Georgelin, who was appointed to the restoration project by French president Emmanuel Macron. According to Geiogelin, this was a critical step in order to start the phase of restoring and rebuilding the parts destroyed by the fire.

“We are determined to win this battle of 2024, to reopen our cathedral in 2024,” Georgelin said. “It will be France’s honor to do so, and we will do so because we are all united on this goal.”

As the world continues to advance in its fight against the COVID-19 pandemic, vaccinations are being given out to millions around the world and restrictions are beginning to loosen as a light appears at the end of the tunnel. How will this affect travel in summer 2021? Will you be able to visit other countries and see the world? The answer is hopeful, but complicated.

Who’s Vaccinated?

Many countries have already begun setting up systems in which fully vaccinated travelers will be able to cross into their borders from abroad. This benefits travelers from places like the United States, the UK, and Chile, where nearly half of the population has been vaccinated against the disease.

However, it might cause problems for people who want to travel from other countries where vaccinations have gone more slowly. Keep waiting for your chance to get the jab if you haven’t been lucky enough to do so yet, as this could open a mountain of possibilities.

Tread Lightly

While some countries are looking at this idea for vaccinated travelers, there are others that aren’t even taking vaccination status into consideration for travelers. Mexico is a good example. While this might be an easier option, keep in mind that you will need to take extra precautions while heading to countries like these.

Be sure to keep a close eye on internet sources and news reports to see what restrictions and what possibilities will open up over the next few months. Our long travel nightmare might soon be coming to a close!

The past twelve months have represented the most challenging period for travel in recent history. The COVID-19 pandemic has reduced mobility, closed country borders, and limited people from traveling for most of the past year.

To this day, most of the world’s countries are not letting in international travelers for leisure vacations, and it might seem like this situation will never end. But will it, soon?

Vaccinations in most of the developed world are being administered and distributed at a rapid rate. Experts point to the immunity generated by vaccinations as the most key step for our world regaining something similar to normalcy and reaching herd immunity.

The moment at which herd immunity is reached, which will come accompanied by a lower caseload and hospitalization rates, is the most likely stepping stone for the re-opening of countries and the return of international travel.

So, when might this happen? Most developed nations are aiming to finish the vaccination of a large majority of their populations at some point between this summer and this fall. This means that, if things go well, much of the world may open up by the time fall or winter 2021 comes around. Summer is unlikely, but looking just a few months later, there is hope on the horizon.

However, keep in mind that not all travel destinations are in the developed world and that this may force them to wait until they get their hands on enough vaccinations to keep their own populations safe. We will just have to wait and see.

It seems as if our long travel nightmare might be finally coming to an end, so start thinking about where your dreams might take you.

The German capital has long had issues with its airport infrastructure, with the main Tegel Airport and the secondary Schonefeld Airport being undersized and out-of-date. The Brandenburg Airport was meant to alleviate these problems but ran into constant budget and construction problems.

However, thanks partially to the COVID-19 pandemic which has slowed down air travel and given airports an opportunity to “breathe,” construction has advanced and plans have been put in place that will allow the airport to finally give a chance to open.

The opening of this new airport, which is set to share traffic with Tegel in the meantime, will give the German capital a much-needed airport infrastructure boost and allow even more people to visit the city.

Aeroflot, Lufthansa, United, and Easyjet are four airlines that have already committed to beginning service at the new airport this fall, signaling a new beginning for Berlin’s air travel scene.

The United States of America is a region that has lagged behind the rest of the Western World when it comes to train travel in recent decades. While Amtrak was once a widely-used and profitable company that transported travelers throughout the country, it has now largely been replaced by flights and car travel.

One project in Texas is planning to put a small dent in this trend, however. Its name is the Texas Central Railway, and its plan is to develop a high-speed train connection between the major cities of Dallas and Houston that will reduce vehicle traffic between these two major cities.

This project would link the two cities in a matter of only an hour and a half, providing a great opportunity for tourists and residents of Texas alike to make a quick trip between Houston and Dallas, two places that are definitely worth visiting.

While construction has not yet begun on the line, which plans to operate at nearly 200 miles per hour, steps are currently being made for the plan’s execution. A bid from the Spanish rail company RENFE was recently accepted, meaning that the construction of this project should begin soon.

This will make the Texas Central Train the first high-speed rail line in the United States, providing a unique chance to travel in speed between these two cities and experience something that we could once only dream of.

How long do you think it takes to fly from North America to Europe? You would probably guess between six and eight hours, right? Well, that might typically be the case, but a British Airways flight from New York City to London shattered that time on February 8th.

British Airways flight 112 traveled from John F. Kennedy International Airport to London Heathrow across the pond in just 4 hours and 56 minutes, shattering the previous record for a trans-Atlantic crossing.

The previous record of 5 hours and 13 minutes was held by Norwegian Airlines, who set their time in January of 2018.

The British Airways Boeing 747 was able to cross the ocean so quickly due to a relatively rare meteorological phenomenon. Storm Ciara, which propelled wind speeds in the North Atlantic Jet Stream to over 200 miles per hour, greatly increased the speed with which the flight crossed the ocean.

The record-breaking flight reached nearly 825 miles per hour during its fast trip.

Passengers on the flight landed at Heathrow Airport at 4:43 am local time, nearly two hours earlier than scheduled. Wouldn’t this have been a nice flight to take across the pond?
