January may be over, but there are still 11 months to fill with travel—and food. Culinary experiences are a major part of travel, with it even dictating the destination in some cases.

TripAdvisor analyzed millions of reviews from the past year in order to determine the hot spots for 2023. For those who like to plan their trips around the food on offer, they’re in luck!

Pizza and pasta appeared to be a massive draw as Rome was voted the top culinary destination. Numerous Michelin-starred restaurants can be found in the Italian capital, but don’t skip the charming trattorias or quaint gelato bars. Add Pinsitaly Trevi to your list, as well as Bufalero.

Europe dominated when it came to food destinations, although Asia also made an appearance. Rome was followed by the Greek island of Crete in second place, Hanoi in Vietnam in third, Florence in Italy in fourth, and the French capital of Paris rounding out the top five.

On the U.S. front, good old New Orleans landed the number one spot. The cuisine in the Louisiana city is influenced by Creole, Cajun, African, Spanish, and French flavors. Be sure to try beignets with a cafĂŠ au lait and some jambalaya.

New Orleans, Louisiana is a city that should be visited at least once during your lifetime. Known for its European-style architecture, Creole cuisine, and Mardi Gras, the city is super affordable and they even offer tons of free attractions. Here are four that shouldn’t be missed.

Frenchmen Street

To get a true New Orleans experience without visiting the touristy areas of Bourbon Street and the French Quarter, visit Frenchmen Street. The street is four blocks of live music, bars, restaurants, nightclubs, and art galleries.

French Quarter

The heart and soul of the city and a National Historic Landmark, the French Quarter, was the site of the original New Orleans colony and it still has street names in French. You’ll find attractions including Jackson Square, Faulkner House Books, the Cabildo, and St. Louis Cathedral. But the main attraction is Bourbon Street, which is where visitors and locals go to party.

Garden District

This historical residential neighborhood is full of trees, ivy, and gardens with some of the most gorgeous houses and architecture. It’s great if you want a break from the liveliness of the city.

Mardi Gras

You can’t mention New Orleans without speaking about Mardi Gras. The holiday is between February and March, and it’s full of costumes and tons of color. Carnival takes place two-and-a-half weeks before Mardi Gras and it features tons of parades and street performers.

New Orleans is known for it’s food. The Big Easy’s cuisine blends influences from Louisiana’s past and present with Native American, African, French, Irish, Spanish, Italian, Yugoslavian, Latin American, Caribbean, and Asian styles. While many cities have tried to replicate the dishes, nothing compares to the original ones found in NOLA. These are the dishes you have to try while in New Orleans.

Po’ Boy

This traditional New Orleans sandwich is served on baguette-style French bread. Po Boy has many variations including fried chicken breast, Louisiana sausage, roast beef, catfish, fried shrimp, oysters, and soft-shell crab, and it’s either topped with a Louisiana-style white salsa or a tasty gravy.

Gumbo

Originating in Louisiana during the 18th century, this strong-flavored stew consists of okra, celery, bell peppers, onions and a variety of meats or fish.

Jambalaya

This classic Creole dish is inspired by Spanish and French influences and consists of sausage and vegetables, mixed with stock rice. Served on a plate with meat or seafood, Creole Jambalaya includes tomatoes while Cajun Jambalaya doesn’t.

Beignets

Brought to Louisiana during the 17th century by the Acadians, these fried dough squares dusted with powdered sugar are Louisiana’s official doughnut.

Muffuletta

Muffuletta, a popular sandwich, is served on a muffuletta loaf covered with layers of marinated mortadella, salami, mozzarella, ham, provolone, and olive salad.

Carnival 2020 is fast approaching, with this year’s edition of the holiday set to take place on the 24th and 25th of February. While some regions on Earth don’t celebrate this holiday, others are absolutely obsessed with putting on a big party on these special dates.

Looking to experience the magic of Carnival? Check out these three recommendations for places to celebrate it.l

Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Spain

Santa Cruz de Tenerife, located in the Spanish Canary Islands, has arguably Spain’s biggest Carnival celebration. Here, you can celebrate the festivities with singing groups, bands, and parades that culminate with the “burial of the sardine” to commemorate the end of Carnival.

New Orleans, Louisiana, USA

New Orleans’ celebration of Carnival basically boils down to “Mardi Gras,” or Fat Tuesday. The Big Easy turns into a massive party on this day, with all kinds of raucous celebrations in a day full of excess that marks the last day before the beginning of Lent.

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Rio de Janeiro’s Carnival is probably the world’s biggest and most internationally renowned Carnival. Elaborate outfits, endless food and drink, and a city that essentially shuts down to host a massive party make Carnival in Rio a bucket list experience.

On the U.S. front, good old New Orleans landed the number one spot.
