With a rich cultural heritage and extensive list of architectural masterpieces, Rome is one of the most popular travel destinations in the world for a reason. Historic landmarks like the Colosseum and Trevi Fountain attract millions of visitors from around the globe each year, but they’re far from all the Italian capital has to offer. If you’re planning a trip to The Eternal City in the near future, read on to learn more about some underrated attractions worth adding to your itinerary.

Museo della Cucina

Most of us are aware that Rome is famous for its food, but did you know that the city is actually home to a dedicated food museum? In the neighborhood of Trastevere, visitors can learn all there is to know and gain a new appreciation for Italian culinary tradition through interactive exhibits, tastings, and works of art. Take a guided tour, then head to a nearby osteria and put your knowledge to the test.

Villa Borghese Gardens

Escape the hustle and bustle of the city without actually leaving the center with a stop by Villa Borghese, an expansive landscape garden within walking distance from the Spanish Steps. As the third-largest public park in Rome, Villa Borghese is home to a curated collection of sculptures and other attractions, including a zoo. Take a stroll and check out all of the different works, or rent a rowboat and spend an afternoon relaxing on the lake.

Capitoline Museums

While the Roman Forum and Colosseum tend to steal the historical spotlight, the Capitoline Museums offer a more intimate glimpse into Rome’s ancient past. Located atop the Capitoline Hill in Piazza del Campidoglio, these museums are considered some of the oldest in the world and house an extensive collection of ancient Roman art and artifacts. Tickets start at €11.50 for adults, though discounts are available for RomaPass holders.

If you’re headed to Cyprus this summer, particularly Aiya Napa, you can combine diving, snorkeling, and art in the Museum of Underwater Sculpture Ayia Napa (MUSAN). The first underwater museum in the Mediterranean is the latest project of the British sculptor Jason deCaires Taylor, who is well known for his underwater museums and exhibits.

Located 200 meters off the coast of Aiya Napa in the eastern part of Cyprus, MUSAN depicts an underwater world with a forest of trees, children at play, and other whimsical characters. Like all of deCaires Taylor’s work, MUSAN examines the impact of man on the natural world. Each sculpture is made from pH-neutral materials, so no harm is caused to the surrounding environment. In fact, the structures will provide shelter for marine life, as they will be covered in biomass over time.

“I firmly believe that Jason’s 93 artworks will be a haven for many sea creatures and will contribute to the development of biodiversity in the area,” said Marine Argyrou, director of the Department of Fisheries and Marine Research, in a statement to My Modern Met. In other words, this work of art will only get better as time goes by.

Are there museums that you’ve been meaning to check off your bucket list? Well, September is the time to finally do it. In just a few months more than 1,000 museums in the U.S. will be free to the public. The idea behind it is to promote cultural experiences across the country. How exciting is that?

In association with Smithsonian Magazine, the 17th annual Museum Day Live will take place on September 18, 2021. Visitors just need to download a branded ticket for participating institutions and they’ll be granted access free of charge to museums, zoos, and cultural centers for the day with one guest.

“As we begin to feel a sense of normalcy in our day-to-day lives, we are honored to welcome the public back to Smithsonian museums in Washington, D.C. and New York and museums around the country this Museum Day,” said Amy Wilkins, Chief Revenue Officer at Smithsonian Media. “In a year that has challenged us in unprecedented ways it is our hope that this year’s event serves as a reminder of the people, places and cultural experiences that have the power to unite us all.”

So far, hundreds of museums across the country have signed up for the campaign and the list of those participating is constantly updating. Check out the list on the Smithsonian’s website.

Victoria, Australia’s capital, Melbourne is a buzzing destination that grows more and more beloved every year. One of the best spots to check out in this dynamic city is the Immigration Museum, located in the heart of the downtown area in the Old Customs House.

Australia is a country whose story cannot be told without focusing on immigration, and that is the aim of this world-class museum. From its First Peoples who had to deal with outside invasion to the British prisoners who were sent there when Australia was a penal colony, this continent has been molded by flows of people coming in from outside.

The Immigration Museum puts the spotlight on how these immigrants and the contacts and changes they have made in Australia have shaped the country’s destination, culture, and history.

History and the culture are the two main facets that this museum undertakes, weaving the country’s history of immigrants with its development as a nation and the tragedies that it has seen. It also expresses how Victoria itself has been shaped by the specific immigrant groups that found themselves there as well as the First Peoples whose lives were forever changed by their arrival.

Any anthropology or history lover would be remiss not to take time to check out this fantastic museum on their next trip to Melbourne.

Address: 400 Flinders St, Melbourne VIC 3000, Australia
Hours: 10 am to 5 pm daily (except some holidays)

Here are 5 historic homes around the U.S. you can visit.

Biltmore Estate in Asheville, North Carolina

Known as America’s largest home, this massive mansion was built by art collector George Washington Vanderbilt II between 1889 and 1895. Biltmore Estate boasts 8,000 acres of gardens and grounds, 250 rooms, a winery, a hotel, shops, and restaurants.
