If you’re a beginning mountaineer, there are quite a few gorgeous mountains under 14,000 feet to get you started for your first big climb. Here are 3 such beginner-friendly peaks first-timers can conquer.

Pikes Peak, Colorado

At a height of 14,115, Pikes Peak in Colorado is known as one of the easiest and most accessible mountains for beginner climbers. There is a 13.5-mile trail leading you up 6,400 feet to the summit. One thing to remember before taking on Pikes Peak is to take a water purifier with you. The water along the trail must be sanitized before drinking.

Mount Kilimanjaro, Tanzania

You may be surprised this mountain is on the list, considering it’s almost hitting the 20,000-foot mark. But altitude is the greatest challenge you’ll face hiking up this mountain. You can complete the journey without setting food in ice or snow. A guide is required and it can take up to a week to reach the summit, but you will be able to sit you have climbed Africa’s highest peak.

Mount Elbrus, Russia

At 18,510 feet Mount Elbrus is Europe’s highest peak. Do note that this mountain demands strength and stamina to reach the summit, and thin air will be a challenge for any climber, whether a beginner or more advanced.

Autumn in South Korea is one of the best seasons to visit. All the trees have changed color, and the mountains are dotted with reds, yellows, and oranges. 70% of South Korea is mountainous, which makes for amazing hiking. No trip is complete without a weekend spent hiking in Seoraksan National Park. 

Sokcho

Before you can begin your hiking filled weekend, you need to go to the small city of Sokcho. There are a lot of small hotels to choose from, but The House Hostel is an eclectic budget guest house that welcomes everyone. Once you are settled in, you can plan your early morning hike in the park. 

Climbing Seoraksan

Seoraksan is the third highest mountain in South Korea reaching 1,708 meters. A hiker’s paradise, in order to climb up the mountain in a day, you will need to leave for the park at 4:00 AM. A day pass to the park costs about $3.50. Once in the park, you will walk by the giant Buddha and begin the slow hike up the mountain. You should be at the summit in the afternoon, and have time to make it down the mountain, although some hikers opt to spend the night.

Korean Barbecue

After coming down the mountain, head back into Sokcho and try one of the many barbecue restaurants. A long day of hiking requires some Samgyupsal and Bulgogi. It will be a weekend to remember.

Climbing the Alps sounds like a big challenge, but some of its mountains are easier to climb than others. If you’re looking forward to visiting the Alps once the pandemic is over, consider starting with these mountains.

Gran Paradiso

Gran Paradiso is located in Italy and your reward for climbing it will be the amazing view of the national park that surrounds it. The climb lasts two days but it’s not a particularly challenging one.

Breithorn

Breithorn is estimated to be the most frequently climbed mountain in Switzerland. It only takes a few hours to get to the top and it gets a bit tricky towards the end but it’s still approachable for many different people.

Aiguille du Tour

Aiguille du Tour offers a true alpine experience without being too difficult for an average person. You can climb from either the French side or the Swiss side. The routes are similar and the ascent takes two days. 

Allalinhorn

Allalinhorn is also one of the easiest climbs in the Swiss Alps. A lift will take you up to the Mittelallalin from where you only need to climb 500 meters to reach the summit. The glacier makes this adventure a little more difficult than it sounds.
