Camping can be much more fun if you take it on the road. Traveling a bit longer to a great campground is usually worth the hassle because you will forget about everything else once you find yourself surrounded by relaxing nature.

If you are willing to to take a trip in search of a perfect camping spot, here are the best states to look for it.

Montana

Due to its big size and low population, Montana is an amazing place to look for peace and quiet. If you want to get lost in the wilderness and really experience camping in its basic form, this state will give you that opportunity. You’ll find plenty of campgrounds in state parks and other areas, but Glacier National Park should be your starting point.

Colorado

Colorado is a state that invites you to be outdoors regardless of the time of the year. Its tall mountains, captivating scenery, and diverse nature make camping a special experience. Whether you like to be surrounded by trees or prefer to camp by the lake, you will be able to find a perfect spot for you. Rocky Mountain National Park is a good choice as any, but also consider Gunnison National Park and Mesa Verde National Park.

Wyoming

Being home to Yellowstone, one of the most spectacular national parks in the United States, it isn’t a wonder that Wyoming is such a fantastic place for camping. However, there are plenty of other places across this beautiful state where you can pitch your tent or park your RV, including state parks, private campgrounds, and even federal forests.

Montana, with unending natural beauty, is all about epic adventures. It’s where you’ll find sprawling national parks and the famous Yellowstone in the south. But hold on – there’s more:

Get Ready for Medicine Rocks State Park

Medicine Rocks State Park is your destination. It’s a 2-hour drive from Glendive and has out-of-this-world landscapes, excellent mineral specimens, and fossils. The rocks have incredible structures that’ll have you stopping to snap photos at every turn.

From Medicine Rocks State Park to Broadus

Although there are a few short hikes to get your blood pumping, you’ll enjoy snapping a few shots of the insane terrain. Take a short adventure in Ekalaka for your breakfast and to check your itinerary before heading off again. While here, you can check out the awesome triceratops skulls at the Carter County Museum.

Next, you’ll swerve through the pretty slices of the Montana badlands to Broadus. It is a town along the “warrior trail, “which is the gateway to South Montana.

Glacier National Park

It’s one of the most beautiful spits in Montana. Glacier National Park is a vast tract of natural wonders, where cropland stands in contrast to the snow-capped peaks. The combination of altitude changes and steep winding curves makes it an easy choice for your road trip.

The U.S. state of Montana is truly one of the undiscovered gems of the country. Known as the Big Sky Country, you’ll have to travel off of the beaten path to find this big state’s plenty of gems. Check out some of the natural treasures that you absolutely must see on your next trip to Montana.

Glacier National Park

The biggest gem you’ll find in Montana is Glacier National Park, located in the northwest corner of the state. Snow-capped peaks, alpine lakes, glaciers, and wildlife ranging from grizzly bears to mountain goats. Stay in a mountain lodge or camp here as you discover its hundreds of miles of trails.

Makoshika State Park

Are you a fan of dinosaurs and places that look like they’re from an entire other world? Makoshika State Park is a badland area with bare rock formations in which juniper and pine trees are sprinkled in. Many dinosaur fossils have been found here, and you might be lucky enough to come across one yourself!

Flathead Lake

The largest natural freshwater lake west of the Mississippi River is Flathead Lake, located in the mountains of northwest Montana. Formed by a glacier millions of years ago, it is known for being extremely clean and a great place for water sports and fishing.

Road trips are great fun and allow for a relatively cheap and adventurous journey. If you are planning a road trip soon and not sure where to go, we suggest driving through Montana—a great destination for visiting beloved and familiar movie “sets” in nature. These two locations are specifically popular:

Kootenai Falls

The formidable natural beauty started appearing on film as early as 1897 when a promotional film advertising train travel was filmed on location. In the 1980s, the rapids starred in Kevin Bacon’s and Meryl Streep’s The River Wild, and in the 21st Century, it was the scenery for 2015’s The Revenant starring Leonardo DiCaprio.

Glacier National Park

Perhaps the most popular site in Montana when it comes to being used as a movie set, we can list all the movies filmed in the park, but we can certainly list a few popular titles to get you started. Most notably is 1994 Forrest Gump: the park appears when Forrest runs across America, and again later in the film when he tells Jenny about his running experience.

Older but not less famous is Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining, which includes the park as the spectacular backdrop to the hotel.

The US is lucky to have so many beautiful national parks. There are especially a lot in Montana, although a lot of people just think about Yellowstone. Montana is a large state full of incredible natural beauty, so take some time and give it a visit and see all the other wonderful national parks.

Glacier National Park

Glacier National Park is one of the biggest national parks in the country and has the name because of the peaks that were carved out by glaciers. There are tons of hiking trails, over 700 miles of them, and one of the biggest attractions besides the mountains is Hidden Lake. There’s even a chance you could see a grizzly bear, so it’s really not something to be missed.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BzyVJ0TpMLw/

Helena National Forest

This national park is not known by many, but it’s a real beauty. Helena National Forest is almost 1,000,000 acres large and is divided into multiple areas for visitors to enjoy. One of the most popular places to see is the Gates of the Mountains Wilderness, which was incorporated into the park in the 1960s. There you can do water sports, mountain bike, and explore the trails around this massive treasure.
