If you think you know Massachusetts just because you’ve walked the Freedom Trail or toured Salem, think again! There’s so much more to this state than its headline acts. Tucked away from the usual tourist haunts are some truly enchanting hidden gems.

Bash Bish Falls, Mount Washington

Hidden in the Taconic Mountains on the western edge of Massachusetts, Bash Bish Falls is one of the state’s most spectacular yet lesser-known waterfalls. A moderately easy hike leads you to the stunning cascade, where water tumbles dramatically between rock formations into a serene pool below. It’s a perfect spot for photography, picnicking, and simply soaking in the natural beauty.

Dogtown, Gloucester

Once a colonial-era settlement dating back to the 1600s, Dogtown is now an abandoned village and a network of nature trails rich in history. This mysterious area is dotted with boulders inscribed with enigmatic words and phrases from the Depression era. It’s a fascinating place for history buffs and nature lovers alike.

The Montague Bookmill, Montague

“Books you don’t need in a place you can’t find,” boasts the slogan of the Montague Bookmill, a bookstore housed in a 19th-century gristmill set along the banks of the Sawmill River. The Mill also has a café, a restaurant, and several other small businesses.

There are many unusual and quirky houses around the world, and the last one that drew our attention is this incredible house in Massachusetts built with newspaper. The most impressive thing about it is that it still stands after nearly a century.

To visit the newspaper house, you need to go to the Pigeon Cove neighborhood in Rockport, Massachusetts. There are signs that will help you find it from the main road but look carefully as they are small. You can go for a self-guided tour every day from 10 am to 5 pm from April to October.

After nearly 100 years, it’s no surprise that some of the layers have started to peel off, but the visitors are actually enjoying that part as it gives them a unique glimpse of history.

The man who built the house was an engineer named Elis F. Stenman who had previously used newspapers to build other things, but no project measured in size to this house. He even managed to live in it for two years! His motivation to build something like this was never fully disclosed, but he likely wanted to explore cheaper ways to build homes. He also made the glue for holding the newspaper layers himself using flour, water, and apple rind!

Cape Cod, Massachusetts

Cape Cod really reminds us of coastal England. Its thriving arts and crafts community will help you feel like you’re on a vacation across the ocean. Take a walks down the gorgeous coastline and enjoy the seafood.

Virginia Wine Country

The closest thing you can get to feeling like you’re in Tuscany is visiting Virginia and its Wine Country. Don’t mind the colonial architecture, though. We hope that the nearby wineries are enough to make you forget you didn’t actually travel to Italy.

Martha’s Vineyard is an island off Cape Cod in Massachusetts. Though it’s an island and does, of course, have beaches, it’s well known for its thriving nature that can be enjoyed in so many ways. There are so many special reasons why Martha’s Vineyard is unlike any other place in the US, and if you want to see a different side of New England, you should really hop on over for a visit.

How to Get There

There are several ways you can get to the island depending on where you are. From New York, you can take a ferry that is about 5 hours long, which is pretty decent. If you’re already at Cape Cod, you can take a ferry that only lasts about 30-45 minutes, which is super convenient. The last of the better options is to take a flight from Boston which only takes 30-45 minutes, and depending what airline you go with, you can get onto an adorable Cessna plane!

What to Do

Though there are many beaches on the island, a lot of them are part of preserved land so they are a bit more exclusive for residents. Luckily, some of the best ones are actually on nearby islands.

Chappaquiddick Island is an amazing abandoned beach and that’s basically all it is. There’s only one store so make sure to bring your own food, but it’s easy to get to from the main island via the 92 ferry.

If you’re a water person but want to experience more than just swimming, you should take advantage of the boat rentals! You can rent sailboats, kayaks, and more all across the island, so wherever you’re staying you’ll never be too far from a place to rent boats.

If you want to get into an even more zen space when you’re on the island, head over to the Yoga Barn, where you can practice all different types of yoga and bodywork in a beautiful natural setting that will put your mind right at ease.

All across the island, there are tons of farms to check out with activities for the whole family. One farm, in particular, that is special is called Grey Barn, which is a farm and creamery! Throughout the week there are tons of different things to do, from kid programs, farm walks, and delicious cheese tastings that you can’t afford to lose out on.

What to Eat

Since you’re in New England, you have to experience a lobster roll at least once. Your best option on the island is actually very unconventional, but completely delicious. Grace Church Parish sells lobster rolls only once a week on Fridays, and you’ll regret it if you don’t get these monstrous and delicious rolls.

No trip to the island would be complete without some ice cream for dessert, and once you taste the ice cream at Vineyard Scoops, you’ll be hooked. While you have your standard flavors, this ice cream shop is always mixing it up with different colored and flavored cones, and other exciting twists!

Flea markets are a super exciting place where you can find things that are totally unique, which is the best part of going!

Every treasure you find you can be confident in because you know there are slim to none others out there. So if you love everything antique, from vintage clothes to furniture and more, you have to travel to Brimfield, Massachusets to see the Brimfield Antique Flea Market, which is the longest running and largest flea markets in all of the US.

Brimfield has been around now for 60 years now and has run every year since its inception. The market is so large that it would take you hours to walk from one end to the other, which isn’t surprising considering there are over 6,000 vendors that show up to the market. Although the Brimfield Flea Market only happens 3 times a year, it’s actually 5 days long so there is enough time to see as much of the market as possible.

In order to plan your trip best, make sure that you consider what time of year you’re going since the second is in the summer and usually the hottest. Also, no matter what time of the year you go, make sure you get there as early as you can because as they say, the early bird gets the worm.

He also made the glue for holding the newspaper layers himself using flour, water, and apple rind!

Perhaps you’re among the people who had to cancel a trip to Europe this summer and it frustrates you. We get it, we totally do. But until you’re able to plan the next trip, here are some places in the U.S. you can visit that have a European vibe.

Boston has many pretty amazing museums in store, but some of them are so strange you probably won’t get to see them anywhere else. We’re bringing you three truly unusual museums from the capital of Massachusetts.

Museum of Bad Art

This unusual museum, housed in the Somerville Theatre, includes a series of pieces of “art too bad to be ignored” and its main mission is to celebrate the labor of the artists who wouldn’t have been recognized nor appreciated otherwise.

Warren Anatomical Museum

If you’re interested in medicine, you should definitely check out this museum during your visit to Harvard University. It features some truly rare and peculiar sights related to the medical field.

Museum of Modern Renaissance

This museum located in Somerville is one of the city’s best-hidden gems, and it deserves your time if you’re a fan of colorful, over-the-top art. It’s filled with vibrant murals that you have to look at up close to notice all the tiny and mythical details they feature.
