Okay, yes, we all know that a visit to Paris isn’t complete without seeing what is probably one of the world’s most famous museums if not the most famous—the Louvre. But Paris has so much more to offer in the way of art museums than just the home of the Mona Lisa. Here are some other options well worth checking out.

Musée de la Vie Romantique

Located in a former hotel at the foot of Montmartre in Paris’s 9th arrondissement, this small museum is a great escape when Paris becomes overwhelming. It’s one of Paris’s three literary museums, home of the possessions of French writer George Sand, paintings by Ary Scheffer, and sculptures from Bartholdi and James Pradier.

Petit Palais

Also called the Musée des Beaux Arts de la Ville de Paris, the Petit Palais isn’t actually as small as the name would suggest. Built for Paris’ 1900 World Fair Plus, the Petit Palais holds art dating from the Middle Ages through the Modern Art movement, and the building itself is a work of art. Plus, best of all, it’s free!

Musée de la Chasse et de la Nature

One of Paris’s most unique museum’s name translates to Museum of Hunting and Nature. Its roof is made of owl feathers and that’s just the beginning of what makes it so special.

The Louvre is one of many museums around the world that closed its doors due to the coronavirus crisis, but that shouldn’t stop you from checking out some of its best exhibits. This prestigious institution has three amazing virtual tours that you can check out right now.

Egyptian Antiquities

The Louvre has an impressive collection of Egyptian antiquities, located on the ground floor and the first floor of the museum. It’s one of the largest collections dedicated to the history of this civilization in the entire world.

Remains of the Louvre’s Moat

Before becoming one of the most famous museums in the world, the Louvre used to be a fortress that was supposed to protect Paris from attacks. If you want to explore this part of its history, you can walk around the original perimeter moat on this virtual tour.

Galerie d’Apollon

This is one of the Louvre’s most imposing rooms, thanks to its high vaulted ceilings with painted decorations. It was built during the reign of Louis XIV, and its signature ceiling pays homage to this French ruler.

We never thought this would happen, but Louvre has released a beauty collaboration. The famous Paris museum teamed up with Officine Universelle Buly, a cult French beauty brand (also known as Buly 1803).

The collaboration resulted in eight scents, created by eight different French perfumers, that represent a Louvre artwork each. “The perfumers were totally free to choose the art they wanted. There wasn’t even a budget,” the Buly 1803 leader Ramdane Touhami told The Telegraph. “Actually, I said no Mona Lisa; that would have been far too obvious.”

The museum visitors will now be able to take home unique scented souvenirs in the form of perfume, candle, soap sheets, or postcards.

Last Friday, the visitors of Louvre were surprised by fascinating art created by French street artist JR. For the celebration of Louvre Pyramid’s 30th birthday, JR and his team of 400 volunteers created a collage of courtyard around the pyramid using 2,000 sheets of paper. The final result was the illusion of the pyramid extending below ground surrounded by rocks.

The installation is visible from the roof of the museum and from two large screens in the courtyard. It didn’t last long, though. Because it was made of paper, the whole construction tore apart on Saturday as the visitors walked over it.

The artist explained that the installation was meant to be temporary in a tweet, writing: “The images, like life, are ephemeral. Once pasted, the art piece lives on its own. The sun dries the light glue and with every step, people tear pieces of the fragile paper. The process is all about participation of volunteers, visitors, and souvenir catchers.”
