Lima, Peru, is a city where ancient ruins stand proudly amidst urban sprawl, and where every meal is a celebration of life. So if you’re plotting your next escape and crave a destination that offers more than just picturesque views, Lima should be at the top of your list. Let’s dive into a few things to explore on your next visit.

The Historic Center

Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Historic Center of Lima is a testament to the city’s colonial past. The area is a marvel of Spanish colonial architecture, with grandiose buildings and baroque churches. Our recommendation? Start at the Plaza Mayor, the birthplace of Lima.

The Culinary Scene

Lima is often called the gastronomic capital of South America, and for good reason. The city’s culinary scene is a reflection of its multicultural heritage, blending indigenous, Spanish, African, and Asian influences. To truly experience the flavors of Lima, try traditional dishes like ceviche, lomo saltado, and causa.

The Larco Museum

Housed in an 18th-century vice-royal building, the Larco Museum is a window into Peru’s ancient civilizations. Plus, make sure to check out the museum’s open storage area, where you can see thousands of artifacts not currently on display. A rare behind-the-scenes look!

Park of Love

Lima deserves a spot on your bucket list because it’s home to many historic sites and beautiful beaches, but turns out its parks are equally impressive – especially these three.

Park of Love

Lima’s most picturesque seaside park offers amazing views of the Pacific Ocean, but it’s not the only thing it’s known for. The iconic sculpture “El Beso” by Victor Delfín is located right here, while the rest of the park is filled with colorful mosaics carved in stone, reminiscent of Parc Guell in Barcelona.

Park of the Reserve

Park of the Reserve is impossible to miss because it’s located in the very heart of Lima. Beautiful green spaces will draw you in, but you’ll stick around for its magical fountains – especially if you visit in the evening when the light show takes place.

Forrest El Olivar

In addition to being a truly amazing place to relax and unwind, Forrest El Olivar comes with a great backstory. It houses over 1,600 olive trees that grew from only three olive tree saplings that were brought to Peru from Spain.

Check Out The Catacombs

If you have an thing for the Gothic, you may want to check out the burial site beneath Lima’s Convent. The burial ground came into existence in 1808 and 25,000 bodies currently rest there.

Swim With Sea Lions

You can take a boat from Lima to Palomino Island. There is a wide array of wildlife here, but the best has got to be the baby sea lions, who you can take a swim with.

When most people think of Peru, Machu Pichu and the Amazon rainforest might come to mind first. Although these two integral parts of our global ecosystem should not be ignored, there is so much more to Peru that is only now being displayed on the world stage. If you consider yourself a foodie, then you should probably be looking up flights now to Lima. For the past 6 years, it has won the title of World’s Leading Culinary Destination by the World Travel Awards. But whether you are a die-hard foodie or just someone looking for a new adventure, Lima is the place for you.

What To Do

There is a deep, historical value to Lima, as it was founded in the early 16th century. Because of that, there are many fascinating places to visit whilst in Lima. One of these places are the Catacombs of Lima. Back when Lima was founded by Spanish colonists, They believed the dead should be buried under the ground in tunnels as not to spread disease. You can now go through these tunnels and see the second largest catacombs after the one in Paris.

Presbítero Maestro is another must-see spot. It is a museum as well as a pantheon. There are several hundred statues paying homage to the deceased and is quite breathtaking. What is unique about the Presbítero Maestro is that you can go there during the day, or take a night tour if you want to add a little spook factor to your vacation.

https://www.instagram.com/p/Bch6nraFHIQ/?tagged=presbíteromaestro

Lima is a coastal city, so whatever plans you make to do within the city also must include a trip to the beach at least once. There are beaches within the city limits, but they are mostly rocky and not the most pleasant. Luckily, there are so many that are just south of the city that are really worth your while. Punta Hermosa is the closest to Lima, just an hour away, and is an amazing spot if you love surfing. But, even if you don’t, the sandy shore of this beach has the perfect layout for a lazy beach day.

Since Lima is a predominantly Catholic city, there are some really beautiful churches and cathedrals to check out! The Cathedral of Lima is stunning and grand, but there are smaller ones displayed on almost every street corner. Some others to check out are Church San Agustin, Church and Sanctuary of Saint Rose of Lima, and Church of Saint Sebastian.

Food

If you are going to Lima simply to experience a grand culinary tour, you will not be disappointed with the choice of restaurants you will have access to. Central is a restaurant known for using all the biodiversity of Peru and putting it on the plate. Another fantastic recommendation, especially for seafood is Barra Lima. Canta Rana Oficial is another place to get local Peruvian dishes with local ingredients like sea urchin or ceviche. Also, don’t forget about Amazonian coffee, grown just a short while away from Lima.

History lovers visiting Lima have to check out the remains of clay and adobe stepped pyramid in Miraflores. Huaca Pucllana was built between the years 200 AD and 700 AD, and it’s believed it once served as an important ceremonial center of the Lima Culture.

Faro La Marina

If you enjoy visiting lighthouses in each and every city that has one, Lima won’t leave you disappointed. Built in 1973, La Marina is one of the most beautiful and visited lighthouses in all of Peru thanks to its cliffside location above the Pacific Ocean.

You probably won’t have time to explore every corner of Lima if you go only once, but try to visit some of its bohemian neighborhoods, such as Miraflores and Barranco.

Peru truly is home to some of the most beautiful natural wonders in the world, and visiting Machu Picchu is barely scratching the surface. There’s also a lot to do in Peru’s cities, particularly in the country’s capital, Lima. Here are some of the activities you simply cannot miss.

Surf Herradura

If you love to surf, swing by Chorrillos. Here, you can experience one of the best left-hand point breaks in the Americas and enjoy what may just be the surf of a lifetime.

Swim With Sea Lions

You can take a boat from Lima to Palomino Island. There is a wide array of wildlife here, but the best has got to be the baby sea lions, who you can take a swim with.

Parque Kennedy

Parque Kennedy contains hundreds of cats and hundreds of people to watch while you enjoy picarones. Each night, you can enjoy art exhibits and dancing.

Peruvian Nightlife

Going out in Peru is a unique experience. Instead of sticking to the hostel bar, visit a Peña. These are music venues where you can enjoy traditional live Peruvian music. Sometimes they are hosted in bars, sometimes in someone’s backyard.
