Florence is famous as a city of art, beauty, and architecture, and it hosts many of the world’s most famous artworks. From its ancient cathedrals and churches to its more modern hotels and art galleries, there is plenty of fascinating architecture to explore and experience in the city. If you’re planning a trip to Florence, make sure you don’t miss these three unique, beautiful buildings as you move around the city. Do be aware that most galleries and churches cost money to enter, and it’s worth booking in advance if you can to avoid long queues and disappointment.

Florence Cathedral

From the outside, this cathedral is incredibly striking and impressive, and things only get better once you enter. Expect gold-embellished doorways, beautifully bright frescoes, ornate carvings, and an impressively high ceiling, all of which join to create a sense of wonder and awe.

The Medici Palace

The first palatial home of this famous family, and a space in which world-famous artists including Botticelli and Michelangelo have left their mark, this stunning building now functions as a museum that allows visitors to experience the grandeur and glory of this wealthy Florentine family. Each room contains intricate details in the form of paneling, tapestries, frescoes, and carvings, so it’s worth allocating an entire afternoon to exploring this labyrinth of wonders.

Basilica of Santa Maria Novella

This relatively small church is Florence’s oldest basilica, dating back to the mid 1300s. Once inside, keep an eye out for the basilica’s famed stained glass, many of which date back to the 1500s. You can also admire the church’s pulpit, from which Father Tommaso Caccini denounced Galileo’s new theories relating to the cosmos in 1614. Florence truly is a city filled to its brim with history and culture.

Out of all the incredible different cities there are to visit in Italy, one of the most popular is Florence. While Rome and Venice have their charm, Florence has its own special qualities that make it truly unique. If you’re wondering whether or not Florence is worth visiting, here’s why we certainly think you should.

A Quick Walk-Through

The first reason we believe Florence is such an awesome place to visit is because it’s not that big. You can easily walk through most of it in a day, and you’ll enjoy an experience of a lifetime in the process. Indeed, as you stroll through the cobblestone roads and walkways, you’ll find sculptures, beautiful architecture, and gorgeous rivers.

The Aura

But it’s more than just the size of Florence that’s enchanting. There’s also a quaint aura about the place. The energy of the city is that of a small town, where things feel quieter and more peaceful. There’s a certain modesty about it, which is unlike that of Rome, which boasts some of the most bombastic and iconic landmarks of all time. So if you’re looking to be enchanted by a softer Italian vibe, make sure you head on down to Florence.

If you ever find yourself in Florence, Italy, you’ll probably get a craving for gelato at some point. The question is, where should you go? We’ve rounded up the top five gelato shops in Florence to make your decision a little easier (but we wouldn’t judge if you decided to try them all).

Perché No!

Perché No! is known for being the best gelato in Florence. Located on Via dei Tavolini, this place is a must-go for Florence visitors looking for the best cure for their sweet cravings. They also have flavors that change seasonally, so you’ll never get tired of visiting!

Gelateria La Carraia

A cute, family-own gelato shop is enough to make your heart soar, but wait until you see the portion sizes! This place really knows how to load a cone (or cup).

My Sugar Gelato Artigianale

Another shop that people claim has the best gelato in the world would have to be My Sugar Gelato Artigianale. It is by far some of the smoothest and tastiest treats in Florence!

Cantina del Gelato

Cantina del Gelato does more than just gelato (although we recommend trying the gelato because they have super unique flavors!). They also serve crepes and smoothies.

One of the most recognizable landmarks in Florence, Italy is the Ponte Vecchio. This centuries-old bridge is a world-famous piece of architecture that is a must-visit spot for anyone visiting Tuscany’s urban center. So, just what makes this bridge so unique and special? Check out these three facts that you probably did not know!

It’s Almost 700 Years Old

While its origins date back even further, the newest and current version of the Ponte Vecchio was built in the 14th century after floods knocked down its predecessors. Despite numerous wars, floods, and natural disasters, it has stood tall.

It’s Full of Shops

One of the things that you will notice upon looking at the Ponte Vecchio is that it appears to have houses on its sides. Those colorful structures aren’t dwellings, however, but rather shops. Goldsmiths are especially common to see on the bridge, and they were originally the only businesses allowed on the bridge since they were seen as clean and sanitary.

It’s an Example of Groundbreaking Architecture

This bridge isn’t just old and beautiful, but it also has architectural significance. The Ponte Vecchio is the oldest standing segmental arch bridge in the world, as it has crossed the Arno River since 1345 AD.

Italy is a country that is full of gems. From Rome to Lake Como, visitors to Italy have a never-ending list of options of beautiful places to visit.

One of the best options for any visitor to Italy, however, is the city of Florence in the Tuscany region of the country.

Florence is located in the north of Italy, right between the major metropolitan areas of Milan and Rome. It is easily accessible by high-speed train from each of these cities.

Florence has an extremely rich history that can be explored by visitors that are lucky enough to visit. The Tuscan capital was considered the birthplace of the Renaissance and was one of the wealthiest and most important cities on Earth during the Middle Ages.

Masters of art, science, and literature such as Dante Alighieri, Leonardo da Vinci, and Michelangelo lived and worked in Florence. Visitors to the city now can see some of the best works from these masters at museums such as the Uffizi Gallery, the Galleria dell’Accademia, and the Palazzo Vecchio.

Florence is also home to one of the most beautiful cathedrals in all of Europe. The Florence Cathedral was constructed in 1296 and has one of the most beautiful domes and towers, both of which can be visited by tourists.

There is so much to do, see, and of course, eat in this stunning city, so get ready for your Italian dreams to come true.

Major Sites

Florence has some very famous sites that you cannot miss out on, but as for most things in the city, you have to pay and get your tickets in advance. Most of the attractions in the city cost money, so plan ahead and decide what you want your itinerary to look like.

The Duomo is an outstandingly beautiful cathedral with a terracotta tiled dome that can be seen all throughout the city. The lines get pretty crazy for this, so either go early in the morning or you buy your ticket ahead of time. This is luckily one of the sites that you can really enjoy just as much from the outside as from the inside.

Piazzale Michelangelo is a little bit of a hike, but the views of the entire city you get make the climbing worth it. The best time to go is when the sun is setting, but you really enjoy this overlook at any time of day. They also sell very reasonably priced bottles of wine, and it can be one of the most romantic spots in the city.

Piazza della Signoria is a square close to the Gucci Museum and is on your way to the Uffizi. It has a large sculpture hall including the fake David!

The famous Uffizi is the biggest museum in Florence and has many famous artworks like the Birth of Venus. It is also home to an extensive collection by Michelangelo’s and should definitely be planned in advance, sometimes they are booked for a couple of days in a row!

Food

If you’re going to Italy, you need to come with an empty stomach. With all the pasta, pizza, and paninis, there is something for everyone. For paninis, you have to go to Antico Vinaio. This is one of the most famous panini places in the city, so around lunchtime, there will be quite a line. However, the sandwiches are so delicious and you have such incredible spreads, cheeses, and meats to choose from, it’s worth it.

If you are looking to try the Florentine steak, you have to go Trattoria 13 Gobbi. Just beware that if you don’t like rare steak, this dish may not be the one for you. They also have incredible rigatoni bolognese and more!

Of course, you can’t go to Italy without getting gelato. One of the most famous gelaterias is even on the same road as Antico Vinaio, so you know you’re in the right place. The name is Gelateria Dei Neri, and has so many flavors your head will be spinning. Try something different like a ricotta gelato, it is so creamy you won’t be able to imagine your life without it.

City pairing is the next big thing in travel. Why only visit one city when you can visit two great cities on the same trip? This is especially possible and easy to do in Europe, which has a lot of interesting cities to see in a relatively small space.

Check out these fantastic city pairs that you can check out on the same trip.

Vienna, Austria and Bratislava, Slovakia

Vienna and Bratislava are only about an hour apart in a train ride and provide a fantastic chance to check out two cities on the same trip. The beautiful palaces in Vienna and the eclectic mix of the new and the old in Bratislava are some of the highlights of this itinerary.

Florence and Rome, Italy

Florence is the capital city of the Tuscany region of Italy. It has beautiful rivers and mountains surrounding the city, as well as incredible architecture, galleries, museums, and more.
