Watching an animal in its natural habitat is a fascinating, and even magical experience. Whale watching is particularly popular, but unfortunately, it’s not exactly an eco-friendly activity. Fuel-based boats produce dioxide emissions, and the noise of the engine can be disrupting to the ecosystems, and the whales themselves. The family-owned Icelandic company North Sailing has the answer—their electric and silent boats allow tourists to appreciate the giant creatures from up-close without causing any environmental harm.

North Sailing was founded in 1995 in Húsavík, a town located on the northern coast of Iceland. While the company has always been environmentally conscious, it set out to create its first eclectic silent boat six years ago.

Iceland is known to have a history of whale hunting. North Sailing was one of the first to offer whale watching tours in Iceland, shifting the focus to appreciating these animals as friends, rather than food. If you decide to take one of their whale watching tours in Skjálfandi Bay, you may spot blue, fin, humpback, and minke whales, as well as white-beaked dolphins. We can confidently state that their mission is a success—about 100,000 tourists visit Húsavík each year to see these incredible sea creatures.

People like to jet off travel for a variety of reasons. Some like the hot, warm sand of the beach beneath their toes; some travel based on culinary inclinations; and others go because they need to fulfill a sense of adventure. Those in the latter group may travel so they can partake in extreme sports, visit a traditionally “unsafe” locale, or merely do things there that cannot be done where they’re from or elsewhere.

Adventure clearly comes in many forms, and we applaud the travelers who set off in search for an adrenaline rush. If you feel the need to get away and spice up your life for once in a lifetime experiences, then consider traveling to one of the following countries that are great for adventure seekers of all kinds:

Brazil

The Amazon; Iguazú (world’s largest waterfall system); Pantanal (world’s biggest wetlands); Carnival festival.

Australia

30,000 miles of coastline; the Great Barrier Reef; the Outback.

Canada

Haida Gwaii (“The Final Frontier”); northern safari in Manitoba; winter sporting activities along the vast Trans Canada Trail.

New Zealand

For any and every recreational and extreme sport you can imagine; cave exploring in Waitomo; river rafting on the North Island; bungee jumping in Auckland.

Portugal

The Azores; paddle down the Sabor and Tua Rivers; surf on Guincho Beach; ride horses and drink wine through the vineyards of Alentejo.

The standard for most of the world is to finish high school and then move onto university. But, some people decide instead to take a gap year and put university on hold for just one more year.

This is such a fabulous way to prepare yourself for university, and if you have the means, you should definitely do it!

Independence

Taking time to go around and travel makes you become a really independent person, even if you think of yourself as an independent person already. Not only do you have to make the rules for yourself, but you also have to face the consequences for when things go wrong, which is so key to becoming an adult.

Experiences

Traveling either by yourself or with friends will help you come out with such incredible experiences. Whether it’s visiting famous sites, meeting people from around the world, or trying things you’d never think to try, these experiences will stay with you forever.

Mature

Traveling really does make you a more mature, and responsible person. A lot of people will go into university and really not know how to handle themselves since there’s no one around to take of them, but by traveling first, you really grow into yourself and your maturity.

When you’re traveling, one of the greatest ways to understand a culture is through cuisine, and that goes for alcoholic beverages as well. Normally, a place will use what is local and native to their land in their drinks, so you can experience a new place and get a buzz from it too.

Brazil

The caipirinha is the national cocktail of Brazil. This drink includes limes, sugar, and cachaça which is a sugar cane liquor similar to rum.

Spain

Although sangria popular amongst tourists, gin is actually the preferred drink of Spaniards. Spain consumes more gin than anywhere in the world, and most bars have an assortment of tonics.
