Tongariro Alpine Crossing

The Tongariro Alpine Crossing was made famous by Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings, and it’s the country’s oldest national park. The crossing is 12 miles long and it includes hot springs, lava flows, and water-filled craters.

“Sustainability” seems to be the buzz word of 2019. From recycled fashion to a ban on single-use plastics, protecting the environment is trendy right now. Unfortunately, people’s attempts at sustainable living often go out the window when they head on vacation. Here is everything you need to know about sustainable tourism and why it matters.

What Is The Problem?

One of the most pressing problems in the travel industry is over-tourism. Hundreds of millions of tourists head out to paradise islands and other beautiful destinations overseas. This results in more plastic consumption, more litter, and a threat to natural environments. Moreover, flying is one of the most major releases of CO2 and so your flight abroad could be wreaking havoc on your carbon footprint.

Why Does It Matter?

As well as being harmful to the environment and the world we live in, over-tourism negatively impacts locals. When tourists fill up the roads and pollute the city or scare off natural wildlife, the locals suffer. This creates a hostile relationship between locals and tourists who find their quality of life takes a hit during the holiday season.

What Can I Do to Help?

If you are going on vacation abroad, the best thing you can do is be conscious of your environment. Do not litter, limit your plastic consumption and respect the environment around you. If you are snorkeling, do not touch the coral reefs as it harms them. Walk and get around by bike when possible and support local businesses and cultural projects. Be respectful and always keep your mind open to new ways you can be more eco-conscious when traveling abroad.

Danes are often said to be the happiest people in the world, and Copenhagen among the world’s most livable cities.

But even more than that, this incredibly green city surrounded by water and parks is renowned as the most environmentally friendly capital city in the world. In fact, Copenhagen aims to become the world’s first carbon-neutral capital by 2025.

Copenhagen has many green oases and open spaces with fresh air, some of the cleanest water you’ll ever find, an excellent and efficient infrastructure and a strong culture of riding bicycles and eating organic food. Youthful, refined and green, it’s perhaps the dream city of anyone devoted to ecology and sustainable living.

Copenhagen is a gloriously attractive city too, with its unique architecture, maze of cobbled streets and ancient churches, palaces and government buildings. There’s that fabulous functional yet elegant Danish design that reflects everywhere you look, from metro stations to schools and even hairdresser shops.

When eating out in Copenhagen, there are plenty of options. The city’s food-scene is making international waves lately with the unique flavors created by Copenhagen’s many climate-friendly and organic restaurants and Michelin-starred restaurants, including Geranium – the world’s only all-organic restaurant with three Michelin stars and Noma, which is spearheading the recent reinvention of Nordic cuisine.

There are lots of buzzwords that are thrown around in travel guides and blogs, but one that doesn’t get enough mention as it should is “sustainable tourism.”

Sustainable tourism refers to tourism that is done in a way that contributes in a positive way to the place that you’re visiting, in terms of its environment, society, and economy.

As we know, tourism done the wrong way can be highly detrimental. Mass tourism in places like the Caribbean often deteriorates the natural ecosystem of these places, forces residents away from their former homes, and congregates money received from tourism in the hands of a few wealthy individuals.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BraVs5aHuxS/

Sustainable tourism is a way to create positive change and to use tourism as a force for the common good. People that follow the idea of sustainable tourism try to do a few things:

  • Not disturb or harm the environment.
  • Use sustainable, mass transit options when possible.
  • Patronize small businesses and hotels instead of large companies.
  • Support organizations and institutions that conserve cultural heritage and traditions.

While many associate “green tourism” with the idea of sustainable tourism, it’s also possible to visit places sustainably even if they’re in a big city. You can opt to move around using the metro instead of a rental car, and you can grab a coffee at a local roaster’s shop instead of heading to the franchise of a large corporation.

Tourism should be both enjoyable and sustainable, and we are better off if tourists, locals, and the land coexist in mutually beneficial harmony.
