]]>Even in modern times, it has gained recognition and respect. In 1986 it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and in 2007 it was selected as one of the seven new wonders of the world.
Petra is an ancient city, made of red rocks that are unique to the Jordan desert and can be reached by an organized 4X4 tour through the desert via Wadi Musa, and later on foot or by riding a camel, donkey, or a horse. The sandstones change color as the sun moves along the sky.
The arrival in the city of Petra is sudden. The city is hidden from the observer and is suddenly visible in the middle of nowhere.
Traveling in the desert is not dangerous during this period and time, but a local guide is definitely needed as the terrain conditions are not simple and it’s easy to get lost if you don’t know the area.

]]>Shared between the countries of Argentina and Chile, Patagonia encompasses a variety of natural landscapes, from the glaciers and snow of the Andes Mountains to the deserts and grasslands located in the rain shadow of the massive peaks.
Spanish settlers that arrived in the region in the 16th century found most of Patagonia too rough to inhabit and unsuitable for their cities and towns. This is because of the cold, lack of rain, and mountains that generally define the area.
Most people know about the Andes Mountains’ beautiful peaks and towns such as Bariloche, but there is also plenty to discover in Patagonia’s grasslands and more southerly regions.
Trekking and hiking are common in the Patagonian grasslands. Many travelers traverse the area, observing the strange habitat and the interesting flora and fauna of the region. The Torres del Paine National Park and El Chalten are two recommended areas to hike and observe Patagonia’s nature.
Finally, another gem of Patagonia is Tierra del Fuego. In the far south of the region, a cold and volcanic-influenced area dominated by glaciers and snow offers visitors a different panorama of South America.
Patagonia is a must-visit for any nature lover. It makes more an unforgettable journey.

]]>Although Namibia has been inhabited by natives for thousands and thousands of years, Germany colonized the territory in 1884 and began to exploit the land’s natural resources.
One of these natural resources was diamonds, which German miners began anxious to exploit. For this reason, they established the town of Kolmanskop 10 kilometers inland from the port city of Luderitz in 1908.
After the town was founded, it slowly began to attract other Germans which were anxious to strike it rich. Under the orders of the German Empire, Kolmanskop was built in the style of a German town.
After World War II and the depletion of diamond resources in the area, the town was abandoned. However, due to its location in the extremely arid Namib Desert, the town was excellently preserved and can now be visited.
However, it might give some tourists the heeby-jeebies. Why?
The sand dunes of the desert have begun to overcome the buildings that are left in the town. This gives the town, which can be visited by tourists that obtain a permit, a creepy and surreal vibe.
In fact, the strange appearance of the town has led various movies to be filmed in Kolmanskop.
What do you think? Is Kolmanskop cool, or too spooky to visit?

]]>However, a hauntingly beautiful area known as the “Skeleton Coast” waits for intrepid travelers that find themselves in this region in southern Africa.
The Skeleton Coast’s name owes itself to the nearly inhospitable conditions that exist in the coasts of southern Angola and northern Namibia. The Namib Desert is the ecosystem that creates a dry coast with almost zero vegetation. Less than 10 millimeters of rainfall here on average per year.
The results of these conditions are massive sand dunes, the eerie, dried-out hulls of ships that were led aground by the sea’s rough currents and by the blankets of fog that tend to envelop the sea and the coast, and an amazing contrast between the light yellow walls of sand and the deep blues of the Atlantic.
There are plenty of things to do for visitors to the Skeleton Coast, other than simply look at the landscape. The Skeleton Coast National Park, encompassing a third of Namibia’s coastline, allows for wildlife safaris and trips to explore the canyons and mountain ranges that traverse the landscape.
If you’re a surfer, the Skeleton Coast offers some of the best waves in the word to ride. The best time to go is in winter, from May to September, because of the rougher weather and wind in this time of year. Many companies offer 4x4s and surfing excursions to explore the coast on your board.
Run, don’t walk, to check out this unique and beautiful place.
