Whether you’re an adventurous traveler or nature lover, the Central American country of Costa Rica has it all. And the best times to visit depends on your reasons for visiting. Are you going to surf, spot wildlife, go birding, or hike? Here is the best time to visit Costa Rica depending on your travel preferences.

Wildlife Spotting

Costa Rica has tons of national parks and wildlife refuges and it’s home to endemic species that can’t be found anywhere else in the world. When you go depends on what animals you want to see. Capuchin monkies can be seen year-round, but sea turtles can only be seen on the Caribbean coast from February to October and leatherback turtles can be seen in April and May.

Birding

Most of Costa Rica’s native birds can be seen year-round, but the best time to spot them is during the dry season from November to April. For migratory birds, September through November is the best time to see them.

Surfing

People from all over the world come to Costa Rica’s Pacific Coast to surf. Beginner surfers are better off visiting during the last two months of the dry season—March or April— when the waves are tame and experienced surfers can find the biggest waves during the rainier months of September and October.

Cloud Forests

The most popular cloud forest in Costa Rica is Monteverde, in Puntarenas. You’ll find trails that lead up the mountaintops that have fog formations, for a cloud-like appearance. The sight is breathtaking, but it can be hard to trek and slippery during the wet season.

Costa Rica is one of the most beautiful countries on the shores of the Caribbean Sea and the South Pacific ocean, and its natural beauty knows no bounds. It’s extremely popular with adventure-seekers since it happens to be home to several volcanoes, and here’s a few you should consider checking out.

Arenal Volcano

Arenal is one of Costa Rica’s most active volcanoes, but that’s not stopping it from being a popular tourist attraction. You can enjoy the beauty of the Arenal Volcano National Park by joining a hiking tour and discovering many lava fields and hot springs while wandering through the rainforest.

Irazú Volcano

Another fascinating volcano that offers an exciting journey to adrenaline junkies, Irazú is the highest active volcano in the entire country. It’s worth visiting for the magnificent green crater lake and breathtaking views at the Atlantic and the Pacific Ocean that you can see on a clear day.

Another beautiful volcano with crater lakes, Poás has been attracting visitors for decades despite its constant activity. This often led to the closure of the surrounding Poás Volcano National Park, so it’s important to keep in mind that the possible volcanic activity may disrupt your visit.

Costa Rica is a fascinating place to visit. Although this tiny Central American country only takes up 0.03% of the landmass of the world, it holds 5% of the world’s biodiversity, which means the land is incredibly rich in its habitats. It also has the biggest percentage of protected lands in the world, with 1/4 of the land considered a national park. For all these reasons, including all the delicious food, history, and culture, make Costa Rica an intriguing and highly educational place to visit.

If you want to see a completely different side of the world, including one that has all but eliminated deforestation, you must put Costa Rica at the top of your travel list.

San Jose

San Jose is the capital of Costa Rica and there is a ton of culture and art in the city. There are many art galleries in the capital, including ones like Galeria Namu, which display works of art and many other handmade goods that are made by the indigenous folks of Costa Rica. This gallery is also a fair trade gallery, which means that the artists get paid immediately and at a fair price, which means you can shop with a conscience.

There is also great other kinds of shopping in the city, including the Mercado Central. This is a huge market that has so many different stalls and vendors, which are all selling anything from trinkets to food and meat. This is a great place to see locals and to eat some of the local cuisines.

What to Eat

Because of all the biodiversity in Costa Rica, their produce is also very varied and unique. Costa Rica is known for its exotic fruits which are a must eat while you’re there. Some of these include momon chinos, pitaya, passion fruit, and so much more. You can find them sold everywhere including right on the street or the side of a road.

Nature

Arenal Volcano National Park is an absolute must-see when you’re in Costa Rica. This park has a picturesque volcano surrounded by an enormous amount of forest, tons of waterfalls, and more. You can even go horseback riding through the park which is so magical.

La Fortuna Waterfall is one of the most popular waterfalls in the country, and for good reason. The waterfall itself is 230 feet high, and after hiking there, you will want to swim in the pool of water beneath it. The green-blue water is so mesmerizing, and the sounds of the animals within the forest make it for an unforgettable experience.

Cano Island Biological Reserve

If you want to experience marine life and all the biodiversity within the waters of Costa Rica, the Cano Island Biological Reserve is somewhere you have to get to. The waters are warm and perfect for snorkeling. There are many coral reefs teeming with life from tropical fish, to turtles. Off the reef, it is common to have dolphins and whales hanging out, which is really a once in a lifetime thing to witness.

When you think of going surfing, what are the destinations that come to mind? For most of us, surfing is synonymous with iconic locations such as Hawaii, Australia, and Southeast Asia, places that boast big waves and tropical climates.

There are many countries, however, that sadly don’t get the love that they deserve for their excellent surf scenes. Here are three that you should keep in mind while planning your next surf trip.

Costa Rica

Costa Rica, a natural paradise that features coastlines on both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, features some of the best spots for catching waves on the planet. Playa Tamarindo, where the Tamarindo River meets the Pacific Ocean, is one of the best spots for finding big squalls.

Peru

Heading down to South America, Peru is another country that is criminally underrated in terms of its surfing scene. The pleasant weather of the summer months also coincides with the biggest waves, when northerly swells bring warm water and big waves to the country’s coastline.

Japan

Japan isn’t only about ancient temples and delicious food. In fact, this Far East nation features some of the best year-round surfing conditions on the globe. From the more treacherous northern regions, where a wetsuit is a must, to the tropical southern islands, both beginners and experts alike will find a great place to surf in the Land of the Rising Sun.

It’s so easy to dream about planning the perfect vacation, but it’s hard to actually do so. One common problem that I encounter on many of my trips is simply getting bored of seeing the same things over and over again.

This, however, will not be a problem for anyone who is lucky enough to travel to the stunning Central American country of Costa Rica. The amount of diversity that can be found in such a small country will stun visitors with its options of things to do.

Are you looking for a beach vacation? Well, Costa Rica offers that. With 763 total miles of coastline, you’ll find a vast array of tropical stretches of stand to relax or go surfing on. Some of the top beaches in Costa Rica include Tamarindo Beach, famed for its surfing, and Manzanillo Beach, whose palm-lined white sand beach is on the warm Caribbean.

Now, what if you want to spend some time in the rainforest too? Don’t worry, because Costa Rica also has you covered there. With a grand total of 28 national parks (3 of which are UNESCO World Heritage Sites), you’ll be able to see a hugely biodiverse selection of fauna and flora. Manuel Antonio National Park and Rincon de la Vieja are two of my top picks for Costa Rican parks.

Finally, don’t think that Costa Rica doesn’t have city attractions as well. The medium-sized and busy, yet comfortable, capital of San Jose is home to a growing art and culinary scene that captures just what makes this small country so magical.

Don’t hesitate and start thinking about booking a trip to Costa Rica as soon as possible!

Costa Rica is a treasure chest of natural beauty and curious wildlife. A quarter of the country is comprised of a protected jungle and this jungle makes up 5% of the world’s entire diversity.

It is, therefore, no surprise that Costa Rica is bursting with wildlife. Walking down the road you will hear hundreds of species of tropical birds and howler monkeys playing in the trees. In the rivers, keep your eyes peeled for crocodiles and wild cats stalking their prey. At night, thousands of fireflies light up the forest.

If you are feeling adventurous, you can hike one of Costa Rica’s impressive volcanoes, Arenal Volcano. On the way down, you can relax in a natural hot spring and admire the lush jungle that surrounds you. The birdlife here is particularly spectacular and the reserve is famous for its orchids.

Finally, the natural beauty of Costa Rica yields colorful organic foods that are bursting with flavor and nutrients. Tuck into papayas, mangos, and watermelons, all grown fresh and locally. Costa Rica is the perfect place to indulge in good health and feel connected with nature in both body and soul.
