2020 has been a strange and difficult year for traveling as the COVID-19 pandemic has made it harder to leave home and find fun and safe activities to do while on vacation.

Recent research has shown that outdoor activities, when combined with wearing a mask while in close proximity to others, is a low-risk way to have fun while this pandemic continues.

With that in mind, here are three great things you can do while exploring a new city that are outside and have minimal risk.

Zoos

Zoos are a great activity for the whole family at any time, but this outdoor attraction is especially great in 2020. Seeing majestic animals in an outdoor setting with your loved ones is a fantastic and safe way to spend a morning or afternoon.

Botanical Gardens

Another great option during the ongoing pandemic is a visit to a city’s botanical garden. Most cities that are visited by tourists will have at least one to check out where you’ll be able to see impressive collections of both native and exotic flora.

Urban Parks

One of the revolutions of the past couple of decades has been the introduction of urban parks in many cities around the globe. Oases of green in built-up environments can be the perfect, safe place to escape the hustle and bustle that surrounds you while visiting a city.

I always put a city tour on the top of my list when planning a vacation. Why? While we might know a little bit about the places that we visit in advance, walking through them and hearing an expert tell stories and important facts about these places makes our knowledge of the place even better.

So, how can we repay those professionals for their fantastic labor? These three gestures are great ways to show your gratitude to these tour guides.

A Generous Tip

Well, let’s be honest. No one will ever be disappointed by receiving a good tip, and being monetarily generous in this way is important. This is even more key if you’re going on a “free” walking tour, where the only salary that guides receive is their tips.

A Good Review

With the internet and websites like Tripadvisor and Google Reviews now at the disposition of travelers, a good base of reviews is the top asset that a tour guide can have in order to gain more business. If you were happy with the job they did, give them a positive review!

A Keepsake from Home

If you like giving tour guides something that will truly make you stand out, why not bring them a small keepsake from your home? Some tour guides enjoy collecting memories of the places where their customers have come from, and this is a really unique way to show your thanks.

As we enter into the depths of winter, you might find yourself preparing to travel to a chilly destination. Not all vacations are about tropical beaches and walking through the streets drinking coconut water, you know!

It’s extremely important to make an effort to keep your hands warm traveling during winter. Frozen hands can really keep you down and make your ski trip or city break in cold places uncomfortable, so here are some tips to help you avoid this.

Carry Insulated Gloves with You

One thing that is absolutely essential to keeping you comfortable while doing winter travel in cold destinations is having a pair of insulated gloves with you. These gloves trap heat in with your hands, whether it’s raining, snowing, or simply a bitterly cold day. Don’t forget these at home!

Keep a Warm Drink in Your Hands

Looking to add an extra layer of warmth? Why not stop at a coffee shop and grab a hot drink to go? Not only will a to-go cappuccino or latte warm your body and taste delicious, but holding it in your hands will ensure that they don’t get too cold.

Hot Hands are a Magical Tool

Have you ever heard of Hot Hands before? These little portable warmers are a lifesaver, containing material that heats up when activated. You can keep them in your pockets or in your gloves on really cold days to ensure that your hands don’t freeze up.

Every traveler knows the feeling of arriving in a new, big city and being overwhelmed by all of the things to do. Sometimes there are so many sights to see that it is hard to fit it all in or other times jetlag kicks in and it makes us sleepy. Here are 3 things to do when first arriving in a new city to get the feel of how to best spend your time:

Walking Tour

Every big city offers walking tours and many of them advertise as “free tours” where you pay based off of a tip at the end. Not only do walking tours help you learn your way around the city, but they will also teach you bits of interesting history and give you tips of what to see and how to best utilize your time. It’s a great way to start a visit!

History Museum

Every city and country is unique and most of the time, history has played a major role in that. Who ruled them in the past? What wars have they fought in? What are the climate and region like? History museums will answer many of these questions and give you a better understanding of the culture in each city.

Local Restaurant

One thing that everyone enjoys and has in common is bonding over food. Locals always appreciate when tourists go to the smaller, locally owned shops and many times they will be happy to strike up a conversation about what it’s like to live there. What better way to get to know the city than talking to a local, small business owner who makes great food!

The city of lights has many landmarks that it’s famous for, and the crowds of tourists usually gravitate towards the most popular ones. But if you want to experience Paris in a different, more relaxed way, as well as avoid waiting in neverending lines for the Louvre or the Eiffel Tower, you can take a detour and still see some of the more hidden gems the city has to offer.

Shakespeare & Company bookstore and café

Located at 37 Rue de la Bûcherie and filled to the brim with literary classics as well as a variety of newly published books, this bookstore is an absolute must-see for every book lover. The trademark dark green exterior is hard to miss, and the cozy interior invites you to spend hours casually browsing books, with a cup of your favorite coffee or tea in hand.

Le Petit Moulin

This little cafe is located in Montmartre, very close to the famous Moulin Rouge, but what makes this place particularly charming is the fact that it was used as the set of the movie Amelie. For fans of the movie, being here can be a surreal experience, but even for casual visitors, it is a great space to rest after hours of walking and sightseeing.

The Wall of love

This giant wall, composed of blue enameled lava tiles on which the phrase “I love you” is written 311 times in 250 languages, is a little harder to locate, but if you step into the Jehan Rictus garden square in Montmartre, you’ll be sure to find it. The mural was created in 2000 by the French artist Fédéric Baron, and it is the perfect spot for picture-taking, especially if you’re visiting it with your loved one.

A city break is a term used for short trips that usually last 2-4 days. It often means visiting a bigger city, but smaller destinations are also an option. Here are the top 3 reasons to go on a city break this summer.

Cheap and Quick

If you don’t have time or budget for a proper vacation this year, don’t underestimate a city break to someplace nearby. It will help you change perspective and you’ll return home ready to tackle responsibilities and be productive.

Get to Know a New City

A city break is a great way to get to know the world around you, the places that may only be a few hours away but you never really got to visit them before.

Use National Holidays

If you get a Monday or Friday off, that’s a great opportunity for a long weekend away that you should use whenever you get the chance! It’s definitely better than binge-watching Netflix for 3 days straight.

The most popular time of the year to travel is in the summer. Good weather and vacation time go hand in hand, and millions of people make the trek from their hometowns to different cities around the world during the months of June, July, and August.

It’s important to be comfortable even when the mercury climbs. So, here are four tips that will help you stay cool while exploring cities this summer!

Wear Light Fabrics

“Light” in this case refers to two things: both the weight and the color of the fabric.

Avoid dark colors and heavy fabrics like wool in order to keep your body cool in the summertime.

Drink Lots of Water

Water is your best ally against overheating. Keep a liter or so of cold water in a temperature-resistant thermos and carry it with you, being sure to drink regularly!

Seek Out Spots with Air Conditioning

Instead of roasting outside all day, it’s nice to get a break inside an air-conditioned space at times. Grab a quick lunch or snack in a place with air conditioning in order to cool off.

Free Your Feet

It’s amazing how much wearing socks can make you feel hotter. Wearing sandals helps you feel much more fresh and cool during hot weather travel!

Siobhan Ferguson, the founder of the Pretty Cities brand, curates this account which showcases different Instagrammers’ shots of cities around the world. Instead of just reflecting one person’s experiences in a limited group of cities, it instead draws photos and inspiration from a big community of travel bloggers and amateur photographers.

The Pretty Cities provides snapshots of a wide range of cities, from large, internationally-known capitals to smaller and more unknown cities that have a charm that many haven’t experienced.

Urbanism is enough to excite any city lover, and the harmonious blend between shops, pedestrians, commuters, and tourists define the environment of any city that experiences tourism. The Pretty Cities puts the focus on places where this blend has been achieved.

In short, if you love cities and want to find ideas for your next destination, I cannot recommend this account enough!
