The Southwest Region of the U.S.—which includes Louisiana, New Mexico, and Nevada among other states—has its own unique and fascinating culture. Here are some of the foods, sights, and experiences you can only get in the southwest.

Cactus Fries and Chile Sauce

The food in the Southwest is a blend of Mexican and Native American cuisines. One staple of the region is chile sauce, made of Hatch Valley chiles. It comes in green, red, or Christmas (both green and red) variations.

Another popular and distinct Southwestern food is cactus fries or nopales. According to some claims, nopales taste like sour string beans.

Pueblo Revival Atyle Architecture

Many structures in the region resemble the homes of Pueblo natives built before the arrival of the European settlers. They are usually made of sun-dried mud and have thick walls, rounded exteriors, square windows, and heavy wood accents.

Lake Havasu City

Lake Havasu City is a community of 50,000 residents in Arizona. In the summer the temperatures in the area reach well above 100 degrees, making it the hottest place in the US. Southwesterners like to stay in Lake Havasu City for the waterfront and the hiking trails.

The Burning of Zozobra

Every Labor Day, the city of Santa Fe builds a 50-foot figure known as Zozobra out of cloth, wire, and wood. People stuff Zozobra with printed letters describing their worries and fears. The figure is then burned, and people watch all their suffering go up in flames as well.

Visitors to the capital of the United States, Washington, DC, always try to make a stop at the nation’s most important governmental sights as they are the main attractions of this East Coast city.

At the top of this list of places to visit is usually the residence of the United States president, the White House.

It is usually pretty tough to get one of the limited spots to take this tour, but did you know that you can now do it virtually thanks to Google Street View?

The White House has been documented by a Google Street View camera in almost its entirety, except for the West Wing which hosts the president’s Oval Office and its most secretive areas.

The main part of the building, with its many rooms including dining rooms, sitting rooms, and rooms displaying artwork and fancy china, can be explored freely with your computer and Internet browser.

The map will show you which rooms are which, and you will even be able to see information and descriptions about many of the pieces of furniture and artwork that you will see on display in this building which was built in the late 18th century.

Even if you might not be able to travel to DC or if it may be hard to tour the White House when you are able to get there, this virtual tour is a great option for exploring one of the United States’ most famous buildings.

The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has altered people’s travel plans all around the world, making it harder and harder for travelers to go far away from their homes due to travel restrictions and fear about long journeys.

The current situation isn’t prohibitive to travel, however, as one of the recent trends in travel has proven.

Micro trips are a new favorite for people all around the world who are looking to escape, but not go too far away from home. The idea of this sort of travel is to stay within a short radius of home but to check out cities, towns, and natural landscapes that you wouldn’t otherwise visit on a regular basis.

In a one-week micro trip, for example, a person from a large city might visit a handful of small towns within a two-hour radius of their home and also make time to check out local or national parks that allow for a complete disconnect from urban life and stresses.

This concept has been popular for a while now, but has really taken off in the aftermath of COVID-19, as people are looking for safe and relatively inexpensive travel options.

Are you considering a micro trip this summer?
