Here are some of the best pyramids to visit in Mexico if you’re ready for a once-in-a-lifetime adventure.

El Castillo

This stunning pyramid is located in the heart of the May city of Chichén Itzá, in modern-day Yucatán. What’s particularly intriguing about this pyramid is that it was designed so that each year on the equinoxes, a shadow of a snake would descend onto the pyramid’s steps – an ancient engineering feat.

Pyramid of the Sun and Pyramid of the Moon

In the heart of Teotihuacán is the Pyramid of the Sun and the Pyramid of the Moon. Just an hour away from bustling Mexico City, these pyramids were built about 1,000 years before the arrival of the Aztecs, showing how they’ve stood the test of time.

Pyramid of the Magician

One of the autonomous Mayan city-states was Uxmal, in modern-day Mérida. This ancient city is instantly recognizable thanks to its sprawling pyramid known as the Pyramid of the Magician. Costa Rica is a fascinating place to visit. Although this tiny Central American country only takes up 0.03% of the landmass of the world, it holds 5% of the world’s biodiversity, which means the land is incredibly rich in its habitats. It also has the biggest percentage of protected lands in the world, with 1/4 of the land considered a national park. For all these reasons, including all the delicious food, history, and culture, make Costa Rica an intriguing and highly educational place to visit.

If you want to see a completely different side of the world, including one that has all but eliminated deforestation, you must put Costa Rica at the top of your travel list.

San Jose

San Jose is the capital of Costa Rica and there is a ton of culture and art in the city. There are many art galleries in the capital, including ones like Galeria Namu, which display works of art and many other handmade goods that are made by the indigenous folks of Costa Rica. This gallery is also a fair trade gallery, which means that the artists get paid immediately and at a fair price, which means you can shop with a conscience.

There is also great other kinds of shopping in the city, including the Mercado Central. This is a huge market that has so many different stalls and vendors, which are all selling anything from trinkets to food and meat. This is a great place to see locals and to eat some of the local cuisines.

What to Eat

Because of all the biodiversity in Costa Rica, their produce is also very varied and unique. Costa Rica is known for its exotic fruits which are a must eat while you’re there. Some of these include momon chinos, pitaya, passion fruit, and so much more. You can find them sold everywhere including right on the street or the side of a road.

Nature

Arenal Volcano National Park is an absolute must-see when you’re in Costa Rica. This park has a picturesque volcano surrounded by an enormous amount of forest, tons of waterfalls, and more. You can even go horseback riding through the park which is so magical.

La Fortuna Waterfall is one of the most popular waterfalls in the country, and for good reason. The waterfall itself is 230 feet high, and after hiking there, you will want to swim in the pool of water beneath it. The green-blue water is so mesmerizing, and the sounds of the animals within the forest make it for an unforgettable experience.

Cano Island Biological Reserve

If you want to experience marine life and all the biodiversity within the waters of Costa Rica, the Cano Island Biological Reserve is somewhere you have to get to. The waters are warm and perfect for snorkeling. There are many coral reefs teeming with life from tropical fish, to turtles. Off the reef, it is common to have dolphins and whales hanging out, which is really a once in a lifetime thing to witness.

Nicaragua is a country in Central America just north of Costa Rica that really should get more attention. Not only is there the Carribean Sea to the east and the Pacific Ocean to the west, but there are many lakes and waterfalls in between.

Nicaragua is really a paradise for people who love to explore nature, and even if you only want to appreciate it from a distance, there’s still plenty of activities to do. So get your gear on and head out to beautiful Nicaragua.

What to Do

Nicaragua is a dream come true for surfers, especially in the Pacific Ocean side of the country. One of the most famous beaches that surfers love to frequent is a place called Playa Maderas, which is known to have consistently good waves.

If you are a scuba diver, love to snorkel, or just want some incredible beach views, you have to visit Las Islas de Maiz, or the Corn Islands. There are two islands that make up the Corn Islands, and they’re about 40 miles east off the coast of Nicaragua. The reason people love to come diving out there because there are reefs, small canyons, and a lot of undisturbed marine life, especially on Little Corn because there are no cars on the small island.

Las Isletas or the Islets of Granada are a crazy archipelago in the middle of Lake Nicaragua slightly south from the city of Granada. What is so crazy about these islets is that there are a whopping 365 of them, and they were formed 25,000 in the aftermath of an eruption from the volcano Mombacho. Seeing these islets you’ll notice they’re completely green and are just remarkable to look at. You can also visit each one via boat or kayak!

Speaking of Mombacho, while you’re in Nicaragua why not live a little and hike a volcano? Though it’s not classified as extinct, it hasn’t been active since the early 16th century, so it’s definitely safe. On the volcano, there are hiking trails, beautiful views, and lush greenery.

What to Eat

No matter where you go in the country, there are some foods that you will see everywhere that you need to try. Gallo pinto is one of those dishes because it’s the national dish of Nicaragua! Though it just is a rice and beans dish, the flavors go way beyond whatever you’ve had in the past, and most people will even have it for breakfast!

Vigorón is another dish you have to try, and even though you can get it anywhere in the country, the best places to find it are on the streets in Granada. Vigorón is a dish of yucca, chicharrones, or pork rinds, topped with slaw, and is absolutely incredible. Mostly it is served out of a banana leaf, and you can eat it with your hands or a fork, but don’t bother going to a restaurant for it, just find a shady place to sit and eat it on the street.

While the era of colonization left a lot of painful scars in Central America, what is undeniable is that a wealth of architectural treasures remain behind from this period of Spanish rule in the region. Still today, some of the cities and towns built hundreds of years ago during this time stand.

Check out these three beautiful colonial cities in Central America for a taste of a time long gone.

Granada, Nicaragua

On the shores of Lake Nicaragua sits Granada, a small city of just over 100,000 people that is often considered the country’s most beautiful municipality. The dramatic orange and yellow Granada Cathedral towers above colorful buildings in the city’s old town, showing off the city’s beauty.

Antigua, Guatemala

In the volcanic mountainous region of southern Guatemala stands Antigua, the country’s best-preserved colonial town. The 17th-century Santa Catalina archway, as well as the city’s numerous religious buildings, have all been preserved immaculately despite earthquakes and other natural disasters.

Leon, Nicaragua

Leon’s colonial area might not be as big as Antigua and Granada’s, but its centerpiece, the dramatic Assumption Cathedral, is worth the trip alone. Built in the late 1700s, this is one of the best still-standing examples of colonial baroque architecture.

It’s so easy to dream about planning the perfect vacation, but it’s hard to actually do so. One common problem that I encounter on many of my trips is simply getting bored of seeing the same things over and over again.

This, however, will not be a problem for anyone who is lucky enough to travel to the stunning Central American country of Costa Rica. The amount of diversity that can be found in such a small country will stun visitors with its options of things to do.

Are you looking for a beach vacation? Well, Costa Rica offers that. With 763 total miles of coastline, you’ll find a vast array of tropical stretches of stand to relax or go surfing on. Some of the top beaches in Costa Rica include Tamarindo Beach, famed for its surfing, and Manzanillo Beach, whose palm-lined white sand beach is on the warm Caribbean.

Now, what if you want to spend some time in the rainforest too? Don’t worry, because Costa Rica also has you covered there. With a grand total of 28 national parks (3 of which are UNESCO World Heritage Sites), you’ll be able to see a hugely biodiverse selection of fauna and flora. Manuel Antonio National Park and Rincon de la Vieja are two of my top picks for Costa Rican parks.

Finally, don’t think that Costa Rica doesn’t have city attractions as well. The medium-sized and busy, yet comfortable, capital of San Jose is home to a growing art and culinary scene that captures just what makes this small country so magical.

Don’t hesitate and start thinking about booking a trip to Costa Rica as soon as possible!

Central America is home to some of the world’s most impressive volcanoes. Although many are active, travelers still have the chance to hike to the top for an unforgettable experience.

Acetenango (Guatemala)

The 3rd highest peak in Central America stands at 3976 meters. Acetenango boasts impressive views day and night. Although dormant, its neighbor, Fuego, is extremely active and can be seen shooting out lava and smoke.

Cerro Negro (Nicaragua)

The youngest volcano in Central America is ideal for thrill hunters. Volcano boarding here is ranked 2nd on CNN’s thrill seeker’s bucket list and for good reason. After the steep climb to the top, borders can slide at 80 km per hour back down again.

Masaya (Nicaragua)

Masaya holds one of six volcanic lava lakes in the world. It is worth a day trip from the colonial town of Granada and is an unmissable attraction in Nicaragua.

Volcan Concepcion (Nicaragua)

Concepcion is the ideal climb for lovers of jungle trekking and a challenge. Located on Ometepe Island, what starts off as a hike through monkey-filled trees concludes with a brutal ascent through a sulfur cloud. It’s not for the faint of heart.

Arenal Volcano (Costa Rica)

As one of Costa Rica’s most famous tourist destinations, Arenal offers hot springs, natural hikes and the chance to see sloths close up. What more could you want?

From golden beaches to parties, music, food, and everything in between, Mexico is home to a wide variety of attractions that will make for an intriguing vacation. Of course, no Mexican vacation is complete without delivering into its fascinating history, especially as the home to ancient Mayan and Aztec civilizations, which happened to have pyramids of their own.

This pyramid certainly lives up to its name, providing to be an unmissable monument that soars over the trees, defining a city that stood strong for over 150 years.
