The Kalahari Desert in southern Africa is one of the world’s most unknown yet attractive natural paradises. Covering much of Botswana as well as small parts of Namibia and South Africa, there are so many places that are worth checking out in this arid land.

If you are planning a trip to the Kalahari, add these three places to your list of spots to check out and see.

Tsodilo Hills

You will find the Tsodilo Hills in northwestern Botswana near the border with Namibia. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, you will find a hilly, rocky, arid landscape that contains shelters and rock art related to one of the many tribes that have settled here over the millennia.

Nxai Pan National Park

Northeastern Botswana is the home of Nxai Pan National Park, whose namesake is a large salt flat that can be visited in the area of the park. Apart from the wildlife that can be seen here, you will surely also find the thousands-year-old baobab trees a sight to behold.

Makgadikgadi Salt Pans

One of the largest salt flats in the world can be found in central Botswana. Jeep tours and other expeditions will take you to this surreal landscape, which is also populated by animals such as wildebeest, hippos, and zebras.

As we all begin to think about what travel plans we can make after the COVID-19 pandemic ends, many of you are probably considering a big trip after being stuck at home for so long.

African safaris are a great option for this start of travel, but you might not know where to start out when planning to go on one. As a starting point, these are three countries with excellent safari options that I recommend that you consider.

Kenya

Often considered to be “the birthplace of safari travel,” Kenya is a classic pick for African exploration and one of the best options out there. The Masai Mara National Park, the home of lions, cheetahs, elephants, zebras, and hippos, among other animals, is the most popular region to explore.

Tanzania

There is no shortage of natural areas with wildlife to explore in Tanzania, as the western half of the country is full of game reserves and reserves like the Serengeti National Park. You will be amazed at the herds of animals like wildebeests and rhinos that can be seen here.

Botswana

South Africa, Botswana’s neighbor to the south, might be more famous for safaris, but this smaller country might be an even better option. Giraffes and hyenas abound in places like the Kalahari Game Reserve, a natural, dry grassland with normally pleasant weather and great sightlines.

Going on safari is the highlight of most visits to the continent of Africa. But there is one national park which stands out from the rest for elephant lovers. That is Chobe National Park found in the Southern African nation of Botswana.

What makes it unique is the sheer amount of elephants residing within the park itself. Not only are there herds of elephants everywhere you look, but there are giraffes meandering along, water buffalo grazing, crocodiles looking to catch their next meal, and hippos paddling around.

There are a variety of tours available, and safari packages to choose from. To maximize your time here, you should select a tour with a cruise in the morning and a game drive in the afternoon. If you have more than a day, make sure to spend a night in the park itself. Rangers will teach you how to look for animal tracks and you will be able to see the lions when they wake-up in the evening.

Day tours from neighboring Zambia and Zimbabwe are possible, along with longer safaris for those wanting to see all of the wildlife that Chobe has to offer. Conservation is key and all tours include a service charge to preserve the park and to protect the wildlife from poachers.

Botswana, a sparsely-populated Southern African country, has become one of the world’s premier destinations to see the natural world at its best and wildest. Diverse environments full of animal life and stunning landscapes await visitors who make the journey to see it for themselves.

If you’ve ever dreamed of seeing some of Africa’s mythical creatures such as giraffes, elephants, lions, and zebras, look no further than Botswana. Numerous parks and wildlife reserves contain large groups of these species of fauna, which are protected and preserved by the country’s pro-environmental laws and legislation.

A growing ecotourism industry in Botswana makes it possible for travels to experience nature and its treasures in an environment that isn’t disrupted by development or human habitation. Botswana is one of the most sparsely populated countries on Earth.

There are a number of lodges and companies which offer safaris and tours of this country’s land with the hopes of promoting conservation and preservation of the native species of the territory. Botswana, in fact, has the largest population of elephants of any country on Earth thanks largely to this vision.

Anyone who’s ever made the trek south of the equator to Botswana can tell you that there’s no better place on Earth to appreciate some of the most majestic creatures on the planet. Is it a long journey for most? Yes. Is it worth it? Absolutely.
