If you’re not a city person and you’re traveling to a city, it might start to seem overwhelming after a while. There’s beauty in the chaos, but the constant noise, people, smells, and smog may make someone from a less urban area claustrophobic. If you start to feel that creep over you, you might be looking for some places to get some peace, quiet, and privacy. Here are the best spots to look in most cities.

Parks

Most big cities have a few big parks or gardens that are accessible by walking or public transport. Going out to the middle of them should get you a fair distance away from the noise, and no one will be trying to bother you or pushing past you in a rush. If you’re in a more dangerous area, though, try not to be there alone at night.

Libraries

Again, most cities have a public library will plenty of space for reading and studying. And since it’s the library, quiet is required. They generally aren’t crowded, and they’re usually set up with a few desks in secluded corners where you can get away from others.

Museums

The one downside to museums is that they often cost an entrance fee, although many cities do have some free museums in an effort to make arts and culture accessible. In a museum there’s usually a mandate of respectful hush, and they’re usually clean and spacious which should help with feelings of claustrophobia.

Going on vacation allows you to relax, but there are still some rules you should follow when you arrive at the destination you chose. Big cities can be overwhelming, especially when you don’t have too much time to see everything you want, and here are some things you should never do in the cities.

Make Sudden Stops

Treat sidewalks like streets and don’t just stop when you want to take a photo or check something on your phone. There are likely hundreds of people around you at all times who just want to get to work on time or have some other place to be, so be mindful when stopping.

Ignore Escalator Rules

Most big cities around the world have a clear escalator rule: stand on one side and walk on the other. You’ll quickly notice which side is for standing (it’s usually right) so don’t occupy the other side and let the people who are in a rush climb freely.

Feed the Pigeons

Many people find feeding the pigeons cute, but depending on the city, you can even be fined for it. This seemingly fun activity is not good for pigeons nor the city—pigeons shouldn’t eat human food, plus they can carry some diseases and nobody wants to deal with that.

The city of lights has many landmarks that it’s famous for, and the crowds of tourists usually gravitate towards the most popular ones. But if you want to experience Paris in a different, more relaxed way, as well as avoid waiting in neverending lines for the Louvre or the Eiffel Tower, you can take a detour and still see some of the more hidden gems the city has to offer.

Shakespeare & Company bookstore and café

Located at 37 Rue de la Bûcherie and filled to the brim with literary classics as well as a variety of newly published books, this bookstore is an absolute must-see for every book lover. The trademark dark green exterior is hard to miss, and the cozy interior invites you to spend hours casually browsing books, with a cup of your favorite coffee or tea in hand.

Le Petit Moulin

This little cafe is located in Montmartre, very close to the famous Moulin Rouge, but what makes this place particularly charming is the fact that it was used as the set of the movie Amelie. For fans of the movie, being here can be a surreal experience, but even for casual visitors, it is a great space to rest after hours of walking and sightseeing.

The Wall of love

This giant wall, composed of blue enameled lava tiles on which the phrase “I love you” is written 311 times in 250 languages, is a little harder to locate, but if you step into the Jehan Rictus garden square in Montmartre, you’ll be sure to find it. The mural was created in 2000 by the French artist Fédéric Baron, and it is the perfect spot for picture-taking, especially if you’re visiting it with your loved one.

Chicago is one of the most exciting but modest cities in America. What makes it so special is that there are tons of historic activities and places to see, but there is much to discover within each neighborhood of the city. The architecture is unique and truly all stunning, mostly thanks to the Great Chicago fire in the late 19th century when people began to think hard about the design and materials that were going into the buildings. So if you want to explore a big city that feels more like a big town, go to Chicago.

What to Do

One of the most enthralling places to see art is the Art Institute of Chicago. There you will find famous permanent exhibits like the miniatures, a series of hundreds of miniature rooms created to look in the style of many different time periods, as well as world famous paintings like American Gothic. There are also incredible exhibits that are only found there because of the link to the students at SAIC, the school that actually created the museum. The museum allows free admission on Thursdays from 5-8, so don’t miss your chance!

The Chicago Cultural Center is another must-see place in the city. Originally built as the central library of Chicago, it is now a gathering space for students, organizations, and puts on fascinating exhibits. The admission is always free, and the building itself is worthwhile to see as it is decorated in intricate mosaic design and Tiffany’s lighting fixtures in almost every room.

For another free activity, visit the Garfield Park Conservatory. The complex is full of beautiful and exotic plants and trees that will really take your breath away. Although it is free admission, they do have a donation box at the front, so give a little and keep this botanical paradise open for all.

Food and Nightlife

With it’s large Polish and Ukrainian population, one of the most popular dishes to have in Chicago is actually pierogis. Delicious stuffed dumplings served with caramelized onions and sour cream is just what you need after a day of exploring. Some of the best places to get them from are Pierogi Heaven and Shokolad.

For famous deep dish pizza, head over to Lou Malnati’s. This local chain can be found in most parts of the city, and is really your typical deep dish masterpiece.

Famous American chef Grant Achatz’s restaurant Alinea is also located in Chicago. Everything the chef produces is thought-provoking, sometimes puzzling, and always beyond delicious.

If you’re looking for a fun night out dancing and sip cheap cocktails, head over to Danny’s, the oldest bar in the city! The music is a great blend of old and new, but don’t forget to bring cash because they don’t accept credit cards.
