Switzerland is a stunning country filled with breathtaking scenery that looks as if it belongs in the pages of a storybook. From snow-capped mountains to crystal turquoise lakes, its natural beauty is something to behold, but what really sets this country apart are its small towns. Each one is more charming than the last, with colorful houses and winding roads that integrate seamlessly into their surroundings. If you’re considering visiting Switzerland soon, read on to learn more about three of its most beautiful towns worth adding to your itinerary.

Lugano

While Lugano is technically considered a city, its postcard-worthy vistas and Italian architecture give it the feel of a quaint Mediterranean town. Visitors can stroll along the promenade of Lake Lugano or wander through the narrow streets lined with pastel-colored houses. If you’re a fan of art, make sure to visit the Hermann Hesse Museum, dedicated to the famous German-Swiss writer and painter.

Lauterbrunnen

Lauterbrunnen is a small village with a population of 2,400 located in the heart of the Swiss Alps. Surrounded by majestic mountains and waterfalls, this town is a hiker’s paradise and is rumored to have been the inspiration behind Rivendell from Lord of the Rings. Take a cable car up to Schilthorn for panoramic views of the Alps or hike through the valley to see the famous Staubbach waterfall up close.

Spiez

Nestled into a background of medieval castles and vineyards is Spiez, a picturesque town on the shores of Lake Thun. Spiez is known for its wine production and stunning views of the surrounding landscape. Book a tasting at one of the local wineries, or visit the castle museum to learn about the town’s history.

Traveling opens up your perception of the world to new food, architecture, customs, and history. But sometimes, the most magical sights are a natural phenomena that you’ve never seen or could’ve even imagined before. Discover the incredible nature and landscapes these three places have to offer.

Cappadocia, Turkey

Located in the south-central part of Turkey, this region is known for its very unique geographical formations that look like cones and are made out of soft tufa rock—colloquially called “fairy-chimneys.” The region is full of underground cities and winding cave systems from medieval times. And all of these features are best viewed from the basket of a hot-air balloon—tours are offered all over the region and are a must-do here.

Lençóis Maranhenses, Brazil

On the Northeastern coast of Brazil, the national park of Lençóis Maranhenses is made up of rolling sand dunes across 383,000 acres. In the rainy seasons, the valleys between the dunes fill with fresh water, creating lagoons and an incredible visual landscape unlike anything you’ve probably seen before. And you can even go surfing, canoeing, and horseback riding along this beautiful place.

Socotra Island, Yemen

A little island located along the Arabian Sea, this UNESCO Natural Heritage site is full of gorgeous white sand dunes and fantastically blue lagoons. One of the most interesting sights to see on this island has to be the trees. Both the dragon’s blood tree and the flowering bottle tree are two of the unique species that only grows on this island.

Blue holes are sinkholes that form underwater that look like dark blue circles in the ocean. They can typically be found in low-lying coastal regions that stayed above sea level at some point. They are very deep, which is why they absorb a lot of sunlight and get their typical dark blue color. Here are some of the most beautiful ones.

The Great Blue Hole of Belize

This is the most famous blue hole in the world. Located in Belize, it’s over 300 meters wide and 124 meters deep. It’s a very popular place for scuba divers.

Dean’s Blue Hole

If you visit Long Island in the Bahamas, you can see Dean’s Blue Hole which is the deepest known blue hole in the world. It’s over 200 meters deep while most other deep holes are around 110 meters deep.

Blue Hole of Dahab

The Blue Hole of Dahab is located near the coastal town of Dahab in Egypt. 130 meters deep, this the second deepest blue hole in the world, and it, unfortunately, cost many divers their lives after they tried to find the tunnel that connects the blue hole with the open water at 52 meters depth.

Instagram has become the most popular tourist guide and travel agency all wrapped in one. While it can be fun to scroll through the endless Instagram posts you can never be sure if that place that caught your eye actually looks like that or was it a new filter not yet available in your country.

Here are a few places that actually look like the pictures you see online.

Burano, Italy

The charming fishing village is about a 1-hour boat ride from Venice. As the crowds focus on the Venetian canals, you can explore this vibrant and colorful place. There you will find pink, purple, green, brown and orange houses that can serve as the perfect backdrop for all your Instagram posts.

Marrakech, Morocco

Bloggers are all over Marrakech and with good reason. Morocco is packed with interesting architecture, the culture is fully unique and will awake all your senses. Marrakech is unlike any other place you’ve ever visited. Although you can’t smell and taste how awesome Marrakech is, at least you can see it in a picture that does it justice.

Santorini, Greece

Santorini is one of those magical places that actually looks breathtaking in person too! You will need to get up very early or go out of season to avoid the crowds, but it’s definitely worth a visit. You will even find that the island is much more picturesque than it looks in the pictures.
