Southeast Asia, with its diverse cultures, stunning landscapes, and rich history, is a dream destination for many travelers. Fortunately, exploring this enchanting region doesn’t have to break the bank. With careful planning and savvy budgeting, it’s possible to experience the best of Southeast Asia without draining your wallet. Here’s how to travel around on a budget.

Opt for Budget Accommodation

One of the easiest ways to save money while traveling in Southeast Asia is by choosing budget-friendly accommodation options. Hostels and guesthouses are abundant throughout the region and offer affordable rates for budget-conscious travelers. Many hostels also provide amenities such as communal kitchens, free Wi-Fi, and social activities, making them ideal for meeting fellow travelers and sharing tips on budget-friendly activities and attractions. Additionally, consider alternative accommodation options such as homestays, guesthouses, and budget hotels, which often provide comfortable accommodations at a fraction of the cost of luxury resorts.

Eat Like a Local

Sampling the local cuisine is an essential part of any Southeast Asia travel experience, and fortunately, it’s also an excellent way to save money. Instead of dining at touristy restaurants, seek out street food stalls, local markets, and hole-in-the-wall eateries, where you can enjoy authentic dishes at a fraction of the cost. Street food vendors offer a wide range of delicious and affordable options, from savory noodles and spicy curries to fresh seafood and tropical fruits. Be adventurous and try new dishes, but also be mindful of food safety and hygiene practices to avoid getting sick. By eating like a local, you’ll not only save money but also gain a deeper appreciation for the region’s culinary traditions and flavors.

Utilize Affordable Transportation

Getting around Southeast Asia is relatively inexpensive, thanks to a well-developed network of budget-friendly transportation options. To save money on intercity travel, opt for public buses, trains, and shared minibusses, which offer affordable fares and the opportunity to mingle with locals. Alternatively, consider booking budget airline tickets through low-cost carriers such as AirAsia, VietJet Air, and Lion Air, which often offer discounted rates for advance bookings. For shorter distances, explore the cities and towns on foot, or rent bicycles or motorbikes for a convenient and cost-effective way to get around. By prioritizing affordable transportation options, you can stretch your travel budget further and explore more destinations within Southeast Asia.

Many people trying to take a vacation find it hard to organize a trip with friends or family. It requires a lot of planning and each person has their own preferences, schedule, and budget, so why not try solo traveling?

Although it may seem a bit daunting at first, it is recommended to start on a small trip to a big tourist city. Most big cities in Europe are a great start, where there are plenty of activities and things to do and tourists are such a common sight that you won’t feel out of place at all.

Staying at a hostel is a great place to meet people and the staff is always friendly and have many good recommendations. No matter where you are from in the world you will probably meet other solo travelers who have the same interests as you and would be happy to join for a day of sightseeing around the city.

In addition, while traveling alone, you can make your own schedule and don’t have to rely on anyone else. If you’re an early or late riser or want to spend more or less money—It’s all up to you! Solo travelers can be more productive on their trips while simultaneously making new friends and going a little out of their comfort zone.

It’s 2020 and traveling on a budget is easier than ever, and many people choose to stay in private rentals or find an Airbnb and the likes. Private accommodation turns a city visit into a very different experience so here are a few good reasons to stay at hostels instead of private apartments when you travel on the cheap.

The Staff

The biggest benefit of staying at a backpackers’ hostel is the staff. These are people who know the city better than everyone; they are there to offer tips on how to enjoy the city on a budget, give vouchers for tours and bars, and direct you to the tourist activities you’re most interested in.

Be friendly with the hostel staff and your city stay will be a 5-star experience, even in a shared dormitory.

Walk Around With a Crowd

While staying alone gives you privacy, it may get lonely. Most hostels have common areas where you can meet other travelers. This normally ends up in a group of like-minded people having a great time together.

Make International Friends

How would you like to stay with friends whenever you travel? Hostel buddies often keep in touch and visit each other years later.

So you’ve decided to hit the open road and do some backpacking? Amazing! Backpacking is one of the most exciting and rewarding experiences a person can have, only it does not come without its challenges.

Lugging around a backpack full of stuff can be exhausting and if things get damaged, wet or worse, stolen, a life-changing trip can take a turn for the worse. Here are six tips for choosing the right backpack so that your trip will be more comfortable.

Suspension Straps

Most backpacks come with suspension straps but it is important to check just in case. Suspension straps distribute the weight of the bag from your shoulders to your hips and can be tightened to fit your torso length.

Sternum Straps and/or Hip Belt

Another good way to decrease the impact of a backpack on your shoulders is to choose a pack with sternum straps or a hip belt. It is easier to carry weight with your hips, so these are great features if you are concerned about the weight.

Multiple Compartments

Multiple compartments allow you to distribute weight evenly across your backpack. It also means you can organize your things and keep your dirty clothes away from your clean clothes.

Padded Sleeves

If you are bringing a laptop, this is important. Padded sleeves give your electronics extra protection, should your luggage be thrown around when you are traveling between places.

Anti-theft Features

Many backpacks now come with anti-theft features. Look out for cut-proof fabric and hidden zippers if you are heading somewhere where pickpocketing crime is high.

Rain Cover

If you are going to be hiking during the rainy season, it is sensible to pick a backpack with rain cover. Choosing water-resistant fabric is ideal anyway as your bag will likely get wet at some point or another and having wet clothes is the worst.

Every traveler knows the feeling of arriving in a new, big city and being overwhelmed by all of the things to do. Sometimes there are so many sights to see that it is hard to fit it all in or other times jetlag kicks in and it makes us sleepy. Here are 3 things to do when first arriving in a new city to get the feel of how to best spend your time:

Walking Tour

Every big city offers walking tours and many of them advertise as “free tours” where you pay based off of a tip at the end. Not only do walking tours help you learn your way around the city, but they will also teach you bits of interesting history and give you tips of what to see and how to best utilize your time. It’s a great way to start a visit!

History Museum

Every city and country is unique and most of the time, history has played a major role in that. Who ruled them in the past? What wars have they fought in? What are the climate and region like? History museums will answer many of these questions and give you a better understanding of the culture in each city.

Local Restaurant

One thing that everyone enjoys and has in common is bonding over food. Locals always appreciate when tourists go to the smaller, locally owned shops and many times they will be happy to strike up a conversation about what it’s like to live there. What better way to get to know the city than talking to a local, small business owner who makes great food!

For a small city, Toledo has some old and storied history. Situated on a gorge overlooking the Rio Tajo, the old brick buildings and walls of the old city will take you back hundreds of years. While it is an easy bus ride from Madrid and most tourist destinations sights can be seen in a day, it is worth staying overnight in order to fully experience this magnificent city.

Toledo was known as “the city of three cultures” based on the fact that Jews, Christians, and Muslims coexisted peacefully inside the small old city walls for many years.

Some of the oldest synagogues in Europe can be found here along with 14th-century arch-shaped mosques and Gothic cathedrals. The El Greco museum houses some incredible Spanish art while the Toledo Cathedral will take your breath away.

The best part about Toledo is that the old city is all in one area, while the modern, residential neighborhoods are across the river. Almost everything is walking distance and getting lost in the maze of Arabic style alleyways and windy streets will make you feel small and young inside this ancient city. There are not many other cities in the world that you can find some of the oldest architecture from these 3 religions all in a few miles radii!
