South Africa is a land of breathtaking landscapes and incredible wildlife. A safari adventure here promises encounters with some of the most iconic animals on Earth. So get your binoculars out and see if you can spot these five beauties.

The Majestic Lion

King of the jungle and a symbol of Africa’s wilderness, the lion is a must-see on any safari. Witnessing a pride lounging in the golden savanna or stalking prey across the grasslands is an experience that will leave you awestruck.

The Gentle Giant

African elephants are the largest land animals on the planet. Encountering a herd of these magnificent creatures browsing or bathing in a watering hole is a humbling sight.

The Powerhouse of the Plains

The African buffalo is a formidable grazer, often seen in large herds. Don’t be fooled by their grazing demeanor. These powerful animals are surprisingly agile and have a reputation for fierce defense.

The Elusive Cat

Leopards are the most secretive of the big cats, perfectly adapted for camouflage. Spotting one perched on a branch or stalking prey in the tall grass is a true safari highlight.

The Prehistoric Relic

Seeing a rhinoceros with its thick hide and prehistoric appearance is like stepping back in time. South Africa is home to both white and black rhinoceros, both critically endangered but making a comeback thanks to conservation efforts.

Wildlife tourism is a sensitive thing. On the one hand, some companies exploit local animal populations by forcing them to perform or keeping them in less-than-ideal conditions, but when done in the right setting with a organization that prioritizes animal welfare, it can be a great way to connect with the natural world and learn more about the importance of conservation. If you’re an animal lover looking to make wildlife a part of your travels, read on to learn how to do so responsibly.

Choose Ethical Experiences

Engaging in responsible wildlife tourism starts with choosing responsible attractions. Avoid places that exploit animals for entertainment and financial gain, and instead, opt for sanctuaries that prioritize conservation and rehabilitation over flashy shows and customer interaction. As much as you may want to ride that elephant, in reality, it’s a lot more fun for you than it is for him.

Respect Habitat

You wouldn’t like it if someone came into your house and left a bunch of trash behind, so why do it to animals? Respecting the natural habitats of wildlife is crucial for their well-being and maintaining ecological balance, so be sure to take all of your belongings with you, including biodegradable items such as banana peels. Additionally, keep a safe distance from animals to avoid causing stress and follow any other established guidelines, such as viewing time limits.

Minimize Your Impact

Even outside of sanctuaries and reserves, it’s important to be aware of the impact of our choices and opt for sustainable options when we can. Ecosystems function as just that—systems, and something as small as a plastic straw can end up harming wildlife if not disposed of properly. Staying in eco-friendly lodgings if possible, avoiding single-use plastics, and opting for public transportation are just some of the ways we can protect wildlife and support a sustainable future for all.

If you’re an animal lover who also has a hobby of traveling, then you know how amazing it is when you can combine your two passions into one by visiting destinations with special, animal-related experiences. If that sounds perfect to you, here are a few destinations we recommend.

Isla Martillo, Argentina

Close your eyes and picture an island overflowing with penguins. Sound like a dream? Well, if you visit Isla Martillo in Argentina between the months of October and April, you’ll be able to make this dream come true. These penguins are even calm and friendly to humans.

Aoshima, Japan

Japan is known for loving cats—after all, it is the home of Hello Kitty—and, indeed, it is a great place to go if you’re a cat lover. Aoshima is an island where the cats outnumber the people six to one, meaning you’re guaranteed to have a kitty encounter if you go.

Sydney, Australia

Why go to Sea World when you can go whale watching in Sydney Australia where, from May to November, you can observe the migration of wild humpback whales as they leave Antarctica for Australia to have their babies. It’s an out-of-this-world experience, and plus you can be confident these whales are leaving out their lives in nature and peace as opposed to captivity.

The minister of South Africa’s Department of Forestry, Fisheries, and the Environment Barbara Creecy did a review of the country’s policies revolving around wildlife in October of 2019. The panel she formed has made some new rules and they include a ban on the captive breeding of lions, letting tourists interact with them, and selling lion parts.

On May 2nd, 2021, the minister shared a statement in which she announced that the captive lion industry “did not contribute to conservation and was doing damage to South Africa’s conservation and tourism reputation.” It’s now up to the parliament to turn the decision into law and it’s likely that will happen.

Captive lions around the world often live in inhumane conditions without proper care and nutrition. According to National Geographic, there are around 2,000 wild lions in South Africa and 6,000-8,000 lions in captivity in the country.

Many tourists find it exciting to feed and pet lion cubs, but what looks cute on the outside comes with a big price. When the cubs grow up, they are often sold and killed. These practices are now being banned. The new law “will result in both protection and enhancement of South Africa’s international reputation, repositioning the country as an even more competitive destination of choice for ecotourism and responsible hunting,” as Creecy says.

The seaside city of Veracruz in east-central Mexico is a hidden gem of the country. Full of stunning architecture, beaches, and cultural attractions, Veracruz has a little something for everyone. If you are an animal or water lover, there is one attraction that you simply cannot leave this city without seeing: the Veracruz Aquarium.

Opened in 1992, the Veracruz Aquarium has grown to become the most important aquarium in all of Mexico. From sea life native to the waters of the Gulf of Mexico just a few miles from the aquarium to native Mexican freshwater species, this aquarium does a great job showing off the best of the country.

Of particular interest is the aquarium’s recreation of the Los Txultas rainforest area, where you will find freshwater fish alongside terrestrial animals such as boa constrictors and macaws!

While the Veracruz Aquarium does focus on native fauna, don’t worry if you are looking for exhibitions that show off something a little more exotic. One of the coolest shark exhibitions you will find anywhere shows off tiger, reef, and nurse sharks that inhabit the world’s oceans.

Humboldt penguins and manatees are two more of the star attractions of one of Latin America’s best aquariums and a must-see spot on your next trip to Veracruz.

Run, don’t walk to this fantastic exhibition of the best that our world’s lakes, rivers, and seas have to offer!

The Philippines consists of over 7,600 islands that are home to an incredible amount of diverse species. Almost half of all the animals in this country are endemic, meaning that they don’t live anywhere else in the world, according to the Convention on Biological Diversity.

“Everywhere you go in the Philippines, you’re going to be surrounded by nature,” said Gab Mejia, photographer for National Geographic. “Each island you travel to will have different species.”

There’s also some bad news. Over 700 of the native species that live in the Philippines are about to be extinct, according to the same source. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, an increase in illegal fishing and poaching has been noticed which only makes it worse.

When you visit the Philippines and decide to explore all the wonderful nature it has to offer, make sure to be respectful toward it. This can be challenging with more people visiting the destination, but there are ways for tourists to see everything they want to see and still respect the natural processes that are happening.

Big cats are magnificent and nobody can ignore their beauty. If you want to see three of the world’s biggest cat species, here are the places you should travel to.

Jaguar | Brazil

The largest cat in the Americas, the Jaguar lives in the U.S. Southwest and South America. Sadly, the animal is currently listed as Near Threatened on the IUCN Red List. If you want to see it up-close, the best place to do that is the Pantanal region in Brazil. There are jaguar tours here that you can take.

Tiger | India

Tiger is officially the world’s largest cat. Some males can weigh up to 660 pounds! WWF informs us that there are less than 4,000 wild tigers left on the planet today. The very best place for spotting tigers in the wild is the Kanha Tiger Reserve in Madhya Pradesh, India.

Leopard | Sri Lanka

Leopards live all around Africa and Eastern and Southern Asia, but they are unfortunately under threat, just like many other wild cats. If you want to see leopards in Person, it’s best to go to the Yala National Park in Sri Lanka. Once you get there, you can ride in an open Jeep and explore the amazing wildlife.

Chattanooga, a city of around 180,000 residents on the Tennessee River in southeastern Tennessee, is a natural place for an aquarium that has a focus on freshwater life. The Tennessee River and the natural environment surrounding the city is rich in flora and fauna that are representative of North American freshwater systems.

Here, in addition to the newer saltwater exhibitions that the aquarium also has, you can see some of North America and the world’s most exciting and unique freshwater animals up close and personal.

Some of the highlights at the Tennessee Aquarium include the prehistoric sturgeon fish, playful river otters, giant catfish, and various turtle species that show off just how much there is to discover on Earth’s freshwater environments.

The River Journey Building, which hosts the freshwater exhibitions, was inaugurated in 1992 and continues to serve as a world pioneer for showcasing the beauty of freshwater life.

Any visitor to Chattanooga should definitely take the time to spend a morning or afternoon at this fascinating aquarium, which is truly unique.
