Alaska may be the perfect travel destination for you if you love winter. Anchorage is a popular travel destination all year long but it’s definitely at its best during winter. The largest city in Alaska has a population of around 260,000 people. It’s small enough to feel intimate and warm and yet big enough to give you plenty of things to explore and enjoy. Here are some of them.

Enjoy the Lights

Anchorage is often called the City of Lights because it tries hard to fight the winter darkness. The festive atmosphere here lasts longer than anywhere else because everyone decorates windows and trees with lights. There are annual festivals and other events held during winter in order to make the season more fun and warm.

Snow Sports

Snow is common in Alaska, so snow sports are very popular. You can try cross-country skiing in Kincaid Park or attend big ski events like Tour of Anchorage.

Fun for Families

People of all ages can have fun in Anchorage. Whether you choose to go ice-skating on frozen Westchester Lagoon, play hockey, or simply enjoy spending time together someplace warm over your favorite hot beverage, the city has everything you need.

Most people exploring Alaska start their adventure in Anchorage. This city is home to many natural wonders – including several serine lakes where you can go to relax and unwind.

Mirror Lake

If you’re in the mood for a short trip outside of the city, Mirror Lake should be on top of your bucket list. It also doesn’t hurt its case that it’s located only a couple of minutes away from Thunder Bird Falls.

Eklutna Lake

Eklutna Lake takes about an hour to reach by car, but it’s definitely worth it. It’s a popular spot with kayakers and hikers, but you can also just go there to unwind and enjoy nature.

Jewel Lake

If you want to enjoy some family activities without going too far, Jewel Lake is your best option. In addition to offering a beach and separate fishing and swimming areas, you can also play softball, volleyball, or just have a picnic inside the Jewel Lake Park.

If you’re not a huge fan of warm temperatures, Alaska is probably your dream summer destination. Anchorage is a good place to start exploring this state, and here’s a couple of amazing glaciers that are located in close proximity to this city.

Portage Glacier

Located within the Chugach National Forest, this glacier is the closest to Alaska’s most populated city. A day trip to Portage Glacier from Anchorage is a must for all nature lovers, and it doesn’t hurt that it’s located south of the equally stunning Portage Lake.

Knik Glacier

This is one of the largest glaciers in southcentral Alaska, and it became pretty popular with tourists over the years. It’s located just 50 miles east of Anchorage, so it’s impossible to miss if you decide to explore the city’s surroundings.

Matanuska Glacier

Matanuska Glacier is a little bit more difficult to reach since you’ll have to drive 100 miles north-east of Anchorage, but it’s worth it. This is the largest glacier accessible by car in the United States, and it will certainly take your breath away.

For many of us, going to Alaska is a dream, but sometimes when a dream becomes possible we get a little stuck on how to make the best of it. You’d normally start your trip in Anchorage, but it’s not the cities that are this state’s greatest appeal. This is how to start exploring the Alaskan outdoors without too much commitment:

Walk Out

Make your way by car or bus to the edge of the city and stroll to Chugach State Park. This is a fantastic introduction to Alaskan wildlife with moose, bears, and other arctic critters roaming around the park.

1-Hour Drive

The Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center (AWCC) is conveniently located about 50 miles away from Anchorage. It is a sanctuary dedicated to the local wildlife and a place you can visit and observe rescued animals in a natural setting. The species and individual animals are introduced to visitors by experienced guides who tell you all about the rescue stories and might even let you feed the bears!

If you ever find yourself in Anchorage, the most populated city of Alaska, and start wondering where to grab a bite, every local will have the same answer – Moose’s Tooth. This is the best pizza place in the entire state and one of its busiest landmarks.

The owners of Moose’s Tooth took advantage of the boom in the brewpub trend to open this pizzeria in 1996. Passionate rock-climbers and adventure seekers named this establishment by a mountain peak located in Denali National Park and Preserve.

https://www.instagram.com/p/ByYQSHPpg4b/

Little did they know that their pizzeria is going to become one of Alaska’s most popular tourist attractions, just like the national park where the original Moose’s Tooth comes from. Over the next few decades, their tiny business grew into the 3rd best pizzeria in the US according to Trip Advisor!

Moose’s Tooth menu is rich with chicken, meat, and vegan options, providing all visitors with something super-delicious. You shouldn’t leave Alaska without trying one of them, and if you’re in the mood for something sweet, make sure to order one of their signature pies.
