Alright, adventure seekers, let’s talk about a place that’s flown under the radar for far too long—Albania. This country is like a treasure chest of natural beauty, from the rugged Albanian Alps to the soothing Ionian Sea, and it’s perfect for exploring on foot. Here’s a three-day travel itinerary to make your planning easy.

Day 1: Valbona Valley National Park

Start your journey with a scenic ferry ride across Komani Lake to reach the heart of Valbona Valley. Spend your day hiking through “The Accursed Mountains,” where rugged trails lead to panoramic views. Overnight, consider staying at a traditional Albanian guesthouse.

Day 2: Theth National Park

Next, transfer to Theth to discover traditional stone houses and the quaint Theth Church set against the dramatic mountains. Hike to the Grunas Waterfall and the mesmerizing Blue Eye of Theth, a natural pool with crystal-clear waters. The perfect place for a refreshing dip.

Day 3: Peaks of the Balkans Trail

Lastly, on your final day, venture onto the Peaks of the Balkans Trail, which crosses through Albania, Kosovo, and Montenegro. You don’t have to hike it all! Every section offers unparalleled views of the alpine landscape and a sense of untouched wilderness. Finally, return to Theth for a traditional Albanian dinner and maybe some local entertainment.

Gjirokastër

Another UNESCO-listed gem, Gjirokastër is a medieval town nestled in the mountains of southern Albania. Renowned for its distinctive stone houses with slate roofs, Gjirokastër is a living museum of Ottoman architecture and traditional Albanian culture. Highlights include the imposing Gjirokastër Castle, the Ethnographic Museum housed in a beautifully restored Ottoman mansion, and the charming Old Bazaar, where visitors can shop for local crafts and souvenirs.

Albanian Riviera

Stretching along the Ionian Sea in southern Albania, the Albanian Riviera is a paradise for beach lovers and outdoor enthusiasts. With its pristine beaches, crystal-clear waters, and laid-back atmosphere, the region offers plenty of opportunities for swimming, sunbathing, and water sports. Popular beach destinations include Dhërmi, Himara, and Saranda, where visitors can relax on sandy shores, explore hidden coves, and enjoy fresh seafood at waterfront restaurants. For more adventurous travelers, hiking trails in the nearby Llogara National Park offer stunning views of the coastline and surrounding mountains.

Theth National Park

Located in the rugged Accursed Mountains of northern Albania, Theth National Park is a pristine wilderness area renowned for its natural beauty and cultural heritage. The park is home to picturesque alpine landscapes, towering peaks, and traditional stone villages where time seems to stand still. Hiking trails lead to attractions such as the iconic Grunas Waterfall, the Blue Eye (Syri i Kalter) natural spring, and the historic Church of Theth. Albania is quickly establishing itself as one of Europe’s best destinations for summer vacation. Beautiful sandy beaches, clear blue waters, and affordable prices are attracting tourists from all around the world in recent years.

If you are thinking about spending a summer vacation in Albania and doing it on a budget, consider the following cities.

Himare

Himare is a charming small city that will give you a truly relaxing summer vibe. Its beaches and waters are among the best in the whole of Albania, and the place is peaceful, making it perfect for a family vacation. There are also plenty of things you can do besides sunbathing and swimming, including exploring Himare Old Town and enjoying staples of Albanian cuisine.

Dhermi

If you are looking for a lively city, then Dhermi should be your first choice. Besides offering an outstanding beach experience, Dhermi also has an outstanding nightlife as an abundance of bars, restaurants, and night clubs attracts younger tourists. The city also boasts unique architecture and offers plenty of opportunities for outdoor activities like hiking.

Ksamil

Most tourists don’t believe Ksamil is actually in Albania when they arrive there since its beaches and waters remind them of those found on tropical islands. However, it will cost you only a fraction of what you would spend to go to a place like Seychelles. Ksamil has plenty of opportunities for water sports as well as other activities like visiting the archeological site Butrint, which is part of UNESCO’s World Heritage list.

Tirana probably isn’t the first city that comes to mind when someone mentions modern architecture, but it’s home to quite a few amazing contemporary buildings. If you want to fully immerse into the modern architecture of the Albanian capital, make sure to check out these three spots during your visit.

Pyramid of Tirana

The Pyramid of Tirana is one of the city’s most recognizable attractions and most significant architectural marvels. When it first opened its doors in 1988, it was called Enver Hoxha Museum and celebrated the legacy of the leader it was named after, but it now serves as a conference center.

Reja – The Cloud

One of Tirana’s most Instagram-friendly spots is located just outside the museum the city’s National Art Gallery and it serves as its art pavilion. This transparent, three-dimensional structure was composed of fine steel bars, and it’s the work of art of the famed Japanese artist Sou Fujimoto.

TID Tower

Clearly visible from the majority of Tirana’s focal points, TID Tower does a great job capturing the Mediterranean light and it’s truly a sight to behold. As the building rises, its elliptic shape turns into a rectangle at the top and its fine-meshed panels are impossible to miss.

The city of Berat is often referred to as the most beautiful city in Albania. If you’ve never thought os visiting this European country, Berat may convince you it’s worth it. Here are three things you can see there.

Berat Castle

The ancient citadel that looks over the city is a place you must visit while in Berat. The fortress has been standing there since the 4th century but it’s not all in its original state. The walls and towers you can see today date back to the 13th century.

Iconography Museum

You can visit the Onufri Museum of Icons set in the 18th-century St. Mary’s Church. The museum offers an insight into the most important orthodox painters who did incredible iconography works.

Osumi River Gorge

You can go rafting on the Osumi River or hike along with it if you need to take a break in nature. The best time to visit is spring because the water levels vary as the seasons change.

The most special thing about the city is its old houses and narrow streets that are decorated with oriental rugs, lace, and other beautiful works of locals. If you go to the city’s outskirts, you can easily spot a shepherd and his sheep just strolling around.

The hostel is placed within walking distance of Tirana’s central nightlife and restaurants and it even has a resident bar and microbrewery where they make beer and raki. The building is a vintage 1920s villa that was repurposed and redesigned by the owners, Erjon and Eni, to become a backpackers haven. The two are seasoned travelers themselves and they wanted to create this place and experience for young visitors to their hometown.

The hostel is fairly small, with only 48 beds available, so each traveler has lots of space to rest, clean their equipment, and recharge before going on their way. The dorms are air-conditioned and clean sheets are provided.

The place has great ratings throughout travel review sites, and from our experience, this means the staff is probably fantastic. Seems like a good reason to plan a trip to Tirana.

If you think you won’t be able to find any hip ice cream shops during your visit to Albania, you’ll be in for a pleasant surprise. Yogurteria is the most Instagram-friendly frozen yogurt joint in this country, and its pink interior will give you cuteness overload.

Yogurteria started as a small family venture in 2012, before growing into a legitimate food chain beloved by this European nation. A couple of years down the road, founders of this frozen yogurt company are still trying to maintain the same quality that put them on the map in the first place.

Frozen yogurt is still their most popular product, and you can build your own by picking a size, flavor and several toppings from a long list of options they have in store. But Yogurteria is no longer only offering the delicious dessert it was named after and you can order waffles, smoothies, crepes and more!

This frozen yogurt spot can be found on several locations in Tirana, but the Albanian capital is no longer its only home. Coastal cities Durrës and Golem also have Yogurteria of their own.

Albania is little-known in the US, but in Europe, this country is becoming more popular every day. It closely neighbors Greece to the south and Italy just across the Adriatic Sea. Albania’s coast falls on both the Adriatic Sea as well as the Ionian Sea, making it a desirable destination for tourists just to witness the beautiful sea views and beaches. Beyond that, the people of Albania are notorious for being incredibly friendly, and the natural landscape is full of beauty and fascinating history. If you don’t want to do a normal European tour, visit Albania and discover something amazing.

Tirana

Tirana is the capital city of Albania, which means you will find tons of cultural events and unusual exhibitions. For example, the House of Leaves, also known as the Museum of Secret Surveillance. This is one of the newest museums in the capital and illustrates a history of the country, its communist roots, and more.

BUNK’ART is another amazing and unique museum in Tirana. This museum was formerly a Cold War bunker. Now, it is a fascinating contemporary art museum. The bunker itself is over 3,000 square meters over several floors which now house contemporary Albanian art as well as a bit of the country’s history.

Nightlife

Tirana has some of the best night in the country, and some would say even around the other Balkan countries. For example, the club Folie Terrace is so crowded on the weekends it is recommended to buy tickets in advance. This club has a host of DJs and is the most popular club in the city. If you want a more down-to-earth Berlin type club, go to Checkpoint Charlie for a more rock n’ roll feel.

What to Eat

Because of its physical location, the food of Albania draws on the best of the cuisines in the surrounding countries, but with an Albanian twist. Byrek is one of those dishes, similar to a spanikopita of Greece, but with fillings that go beyond just spinach. Another dish famous in Albania is baklava, a sweet nut and pastry dish that comes from Turkey. You can find all varieties of handmade baklava in Albania on the street and in bakeries.

Kruja

Kruja is the old capital of Albania and is the perfect day trip if you’re already in Tirana. People flock there because of the famous market where you can find everything from souvenirs, to rugs, to antiques, and everything in between. There is also a castle there that is the oldest in the Balkan region, and definitely worth a visit.

Beaches

If you go to Albania in the summer or simply want to take in the natural landscape of the country, there are plenty of beaches to escape to. In the southwestern region of the country is the Riveria, also know as Bregu, which is famous for beaches like Drymades, Himara, and more. Or, you can go to the city of Vlora, which has magnificent water views and is also the third largest city in the country.
