Are you heading off on a fall vacation? Although summer is the traditional time for a getaway, going in fall often ensures you get the best prices, and most of the beach (or café) to yourself. If you’re heading somewhere tropical then summer-wear is still the order of the day for you, but if you’re vacationing somewhere where the fall weather is likely to be in full swing, don’t forget these essentials when you’re packing.

Thin Outwear

European cities such as Amsterdam, Paris, and London can retain some of their summer glow until well into October, and you may find that the weather isn’t too cold. However, it pays to check ahead in advance, and even if rain isn’t forecast, you will want to consider packing a thin outer layer. Whether this is a cool cape, simple poncho, or thin-layered raincoat, being prepared for a downpour will make your trip much more comfortable.

Knee High Socks

Not only will knee-high socks provide you with a bit of warmth, in many cities these will look ultra fashionable and cool. Across Europe, people want to show off that summer glow for as long as possible, so knee-high socks are favored over tights as they permit a bit of skin to show. If you’re bringing knee-high socks, consider which shoes you will pair them with – they look equally fantastic when worn with classic loafers, as they do with chic ankle boots.

A Notebook

Unless you’re really lucky, you are likely to get at least one day of rain on your fall trip. Don’t despair, view this as an opportunity to experience European café culture. Whether you’re in Vienna, Milan, Bruges, or Madrid, one of the best ways to while away a morning is to order an espresso and sit in a café, close to the window. Watch people strolling by, sip your coffee, and scribble a few notes in your journal. You’ll soon feel like a famous writer, seeking ideas for your new novel.
