Some of our most common everyday things have some pretty surprising hidden features. Learning about them can help you make much smarter use of everything from wooden hangers and grocery carts, to takeout containers and deodorants.

Airplane windows

Anyone who has been on an airplane, has probably noticed (perhaps with some alarm) there is a small hole in the airplane window. Why is that? The tiny hole at the bottom of the window is actually not dangerous at all, and has two purposes.

Airplane windows

First and most importantly, it allows the ventilation needed for the windows not to break from the massive pressure that exists at high altitudes. The second reason is preventing the windows from fogging up.

Takeout containers

The way we all eat takeout, in real life as well as on TV, is by simply opening the top of the container and digging in. But besides transporting the food from the restaurant to our homes, these containers have another purpose.

Takeout containers

The original intention was for them to be turned into disposable plates. But perhaps the reason no one uses them that way is it makes it harder to store your leftover Chinese food in the fridge.

Tic Tacs

Wow. Turns out we’ve been eating Tic Tacs wrong this entire time. No, you’re not meant to violently shake the tiny container in the hopes of a mint finally getting through that tiny opening. You’re supposed to do as in the picture here below.

The small indentation on the lid of the package is not there just to keep it firmly sealed. It also functions as a dispenser. So turning the little box upside down (while still closed) should dispense you the one mint you need.

Grocery carts

After bagging all of your purchases, most people put the jam packed bags right back in the cart and wheel it out to the parking lot and the waiting car. But there are actually metal loops framing the top fold-out sections of grocery carts, that are for this specific reason.

More specifically, they’re meant to be used for hanging bags with more delicate things, such as eggs, instead of having them get smashed by all the heavier items piling on top of each other in the cart.

Car seat headrests

The headrests in car seats are adjustable first and foremost to enable people of any height to sit comfortably, and get the correct support for their heads. But there is another hidden feature at work here.

Car seat headrests

You may or may not have noticed, the headrests are completely detachable and have two solid metal bars. So if you are ever trapped in a car and need to get out quickly, they can be used to smash out the windows.

iPhones

Most avid iPhone users have probably noticed there is a small black dot in between the lens and the flash on the back of each iPhone model. And that black dot has give rise to plenty of strange theories. But its purpose is actually pretty obvious.

 iPhones

It’s simply there to supply better sound quality, by helping eliminate background noise. It also captures better sound if you record a video or voice note while in a crowded, noisy place, such as a concert.
