Traveling the world is a huge investment, and most people think they have to save tons of money to do it—but not Iisa Hero. This travel blogger is still in her early 20s, but that’s not stopping her from exploring the world on a tight budget and teaching other young travelers to do the same.

Hero is an online business administration student, but this isn’t her only passion. She fell in love with traveling while visiting Australia and New Zealand as an exchange student in high school and spent a lot of time in the US visiting her boyfriend who lives there.

Hero visited over 40 countries at 21, and the list is getting longer by the day. She managed to do this despite having a pretty limited budget, and everything from her flights and accommodation to activities and food is as cheap as it gets.

Most people see the life of travel bloggers as a carefree and lavish adventure, but Hero is here to dismantle this misconception. Even though she reached a point where she could make money through brand partnerships, she spent a lot of time working on her business without any return.

“I’ve been creating travel content for a couple of years now and have finally been able to monetize my content in the last year. This has allowed me to keep traveling instead of having to get a regular job. Working for months and months without getting paid,” she explains on Instagram.

Hero’s Instagram page is now followed by over 200,000 people and she became a huge sensation because her posts offer a realistic look at budget travel, with all its ups and downs.

Traveling this past year has been next to impossible, prompting us to be more resourceful with our time-off. But as we look forward to a healthier future, it’s time to reexamine our old habits, both as locals and as citizens of the world. Travel blogger Alison Abbott has long been advocating for a more sustainable, eco-friendly, lifestyle. The face behind travel blog Green with Renvy, her catchphrase is: “Sharing the World of Responsible Travel One Trip at a Time”.

Based between Boston and Nantucket, Abbott is an avid traveler and is enthusiastic about keeping it local whether at home or abroad. According to Abbott, her goal with her platform is to inspire others to take a step out of their comfort zone and consider alternative destinations and adventures.

“Nothing could make me happier than hearing from a reader who has arranged travel plans to stay in an eco-friendly hotel that I recently recommended,” she notes on her website, explaining that she firmly believes that as we become better traveled and more mindful, culturally aware citizens of the globe, the world becomes a better place.

“The more I travel, the more I learn to be flexible and adapt,” she further shared her experiences in a recent interview with Misadventures with Andi. “The world has become such a small place, I hope to highlight destinations that might not be on everyone’s radar. Meeting and learning from others around the globe develops a much deeper understanding and I truly think education promotes peace and tolerance.”

Abbott puts her money where her mouth is. Her blog includes a dedicated section for “green living” where she shares her thoughts about subjects as varied as sustainable wine, healthy snacks, and eco-friendly travel gifts.

When trying to trace back her love of travel, Abbott jokes that she probably became a traveler in her mother’s womb. “I was conceived in Japan and long before I knew that fact, I taught myself Japanese phrases and to count in the language,” she explains.

“I wanted to learn all I could about the country. Seriously though, in my days before travel writing, I started and built a clothing and design business that manufactured in India and the Philippines. It was during that time I fell and love with travel and knew it was something I wanted to do for the rest of my life.”

Cohan Zarnoch has spent the last 12 years traveling with non-profit organizations and photographing remote African tribes. Based in Colorado, Zarnoch is also a surgical nurse, who has spent the majority of the past year at the frontlines of the COVID-19 pandemic. She’s a 54-year-old mother of four and has spent years photographing her own children as well. She never thought she could pursue the hobby professionally until she was diagnosed with breast cancer, which completely changed her outlook on life. “I decided life was too short,” she said in an interview with Lonely Planet.

So she reached out to a non-profit, and luckily they were just in need of a photographer to cover their mission to Tanzania. Over a decade later, Zarnoch has covered the fundraising efforts and mission of half a dozen organizations. Her travels took her to Africa, Peru, Panama, Cuba, and Central America.

Zanoch’s experiences in Africa in particular, stand out to her. Although there is a language barrier in most places she visits, Zarnoch uses her camera to make connections, teaching the kids how to take their own photos and showing all her subjects the photos she takes. She shares some of these incredible experiences on her Instagram page. The warm and vibrant portraits taken in Ethiopia, Tanzania, Rwanda, and Namibia, among others, speak for themselves.

With some half a million followers on Instagram, Brooke Saward is somewhat of a guru when it comes to traveling solo. The name behind the successful travel-blog-turned-brand World of Wanderlust, the 30-year-old blogger is committing to sharing her adventures online through carefully curated photos and thoughtful entries. Through her blog, she aims to inspire others to travel more often and to more places—but also, to travel solo.

“The scariest part is actually booking the ticket,” she admitted in an interview with Redbrick, where she shared her experiences as a solo traveler. “When you land, you will quickly become a problem-solver and there’s nothing you can’t overcome.”

Saward puts her money where her mouth is. Having traveled to some 80 countries altogether, she estimates she travels alone 90% of the time.

“Before I started traveling solo I was a very shy, introverted person,” says Saward. “But when you are forced into situations that you need to figure out yourself (often with limited time), you really grow into yourself and come out of your shell. Solo travel is single-handedly the best thing I have done in my life so far.” According to Saward, the experience is well worth the effort and she encourages others to give it a try.

In fact, her blog offers detailed solo travel guides that include tips, hacks, and general advice. According to Saward, she makes sure to only ever recommend places she’s tried and tested herself.

Her number one tip? Travel like a local. “I think you really have to immerse yourself in wherever you are,” says Saward. “Go to museums, watch a live gig, meet locals, try a cooking class… the list is endless. If you feel homesick, think about how fortunate you are to be where you are, and remain present. I always say ‘I never know when I’ll be back here so I might as well make the most of it!'”

Amongst her favorite tourist destinations, she counts the French countryside, the Swiss Alps, and Russia. But coming originally from Australia, she also notes her home state of Tasmania as home to some of the most underrated scenery in the world. In fact, her most recent travels have been back home, in Australia. You’d do well to take note!

As we slowly test the waters of life after the pandemic we feel an ever-growing hunger for travel—culinary travel that is. “There is no love sincerer than the love of food,” said George Bernard Shaw, and we couldn’t agree more. While food, on its basis, is part of our day-to-day, on a larger scale it represents an important part of the way we experience the world, a true expression of our cultural identity.

Eating, one might argue, is education, and food—as the focus of celebrations and casual get-togethers—has a way of bringing us together. When it comes to traveling, experiencing different dishes can shed light on other people’s way of life, their cultural values, and their identities.

No one understands this notion better than traveling duo Mark and Elizabeth Rudd. The couple behind travel and food blog Compass & Fork, their brand marries food and travel together seamlessly. Their website includes dedicated sections for recipes and travel tips, with selected blog posts such as “How to Cook Greek Lamb Roast at Home” and a “Guide to the Fabulous Melbourne Markets”.

“We tend to be independent, active travelers,” the couple shared in an interview with Travel Awaits. “Our travel style is affordable luxury. You won’t find hostels or budget travel, but you’ll find great value, unique accommodation, and experiences.”

Travel/food blogger Janine Thomas admits she has the best job in the world, traveling on a whim wherever the wind may blow and sharing her discoveries with her thousands of followers. Describing her blog as one that is aimed at both explorers and food lovers (which might as well come across from its title, Gastrotravelogue), her platform offers anything from recipes to travel tips.

Like most travel bloggers, Thomas’ knack for adventure is tied to her early childhood: “I started traveling when I was 9 years old,” she recalled in an interview with Culture with Travel. “My aunt lived in London, so I would fly, on my own, from Cape Town to London for my holidays. It was such a long flight that the aircraft had to stop to refuel on a small island called Ilha do Sal off the Africa coast. That was 45 years ago and was an incredible adventure.”

Thomas’ upbringing might also explain her love of food. Growing up in Cape Town, South Africa, she explains that spending time at the beach was a way of life. She remembers her father would go diving and emerge laden with crayfish—which would later be served with a dollop of mayonnaise (a simple, delicious, and heavenly meal she recalls to this day).

According to Thomas, another dish that represents Cape Town for her is farmers sausage AKA boerewors: “It is spiced with coriander and is eaten throughout SA, even as a street food snack,” she explains. “It is almost always cooked over a fire, and the smell alone is enough to get my mouth-watering.”

Of course, plenty has changed since Thomas was a young traveler. “Travel was very different then to what it is now,” she notes. “I was always excited by traveling and I still am today. I love the fact that you are transported to a completely different world with such ease. Travel can teach us so much, if we are just open to the experience of learning from others.”

Her love of travel and food, combined with her skilled writing and nostalgic recollections, makes Thomas’ platform an ideal attraction for travel enthusiasts worldwide.

When it comes to the ideal vacation, a good meal can make or break your entire experience. But balancing your meal with a nice glass of wine can be equally important. Wine and travel blogger Penny Sadler knows best. A student of the Wine and Spirits Education Trust (an internationally recognized certification), Sadler has traveled to some of the world’s most interesting wine regions and shares her experiences with her followers on her online blog, Adventures of a Carry-On.

“Though we travel the world over to find the beautiful, we must carry it with us or find it not,” Sadler quotes Ralph Waldo Emerson, explaining the origins of her blog’s name. Indeed, when it comes to traveling, Sadler admits to having a bad case of wanderlust.

Like most travel bloggers, Sadler caught the travel bug fairly on, though she admits she didn’t come from a family that encouraged traveling. “My family didn’t really travel, other than to move from California to Texas and back several times,” she explained in a piece published on Wander With Wonder.

She then added that she probably got hooked on travel in grade school geography class. “I recall reading about places like Pompeii and the Black Forest. An entire city covered by a lava flow sounded like the coolest thing ever to me. I’m pretty sure my wanderlust was born in the classroom.”

According to Sadler, blogging came quite naturally to her as she’s always kept a journal, but the best part of being a travel writer is connecting with other people. “The best part of being a travel writer is the people I meet,” she notes. “My biggest challenge is staying focused on the task at hand; I’m very curious and easily distracted by sparkly things.”

A professional makeup artist, Sadler supports her travels by writing part-time and continuing her career. In addition, she hosts wine tastings for both private and retail customers. Her blog includes first-hand accounts (anything from picking grapes in Barolo to exploring the Grand Cru vineyards of Alsace), alongside intimate details of tours, wineries, restaurants, and hotels.

Grab a drink and get on board!
