Amsterdam has so much to offer visitors, not least in the way of its food scene. Across the city, you can find a vast array of cuisines, from traditional Italian to Indonesian to Ethiopian. But don’t forget to check out some of the Dutch classics, too. From tasty bar snacks to seriously indulgent breakfasts, when it comes to food the Netherlands really knows how to do it well. These three Dutch foods can’t be missed if you’re taking a trip to Holland.

Bitterballen

These classic meatballs are found in bars across the city. Nowadays, there should be plenty of vegetarian, vegan, and even gluten-free options available, but if you want to, you can always try the originals which are made from a thick beef stew that then gets breaded and fried. Try with a dab of mustard or mayonnaise, and don’t forget your toast of classic Dutch beer to accompany your bitterballen!

Fish and Chips

The Dutch and the British can argue over who really invented the classic dish of fish and chips forever—all you have to do is decide which is better! Head to the Albert Cuyp Market around lunchtime, to be in with a chance of ordering some seriously fresh fish and chips. You can even watch them batter and fry the fish in front of you at some market stalls! Don’t forget to try some of the condiments on offer with the fish, a classic is “frittesauce” which is just a bit sweeter than mayonnaise.

Waffles

Other countries and regions across Europe may argue that the waffle originated there, but one thing is for sure—the waffles in Amsterdam are out of this world. Commonly ordered as a seriously indulgent breakfast dish, you can expect all sorts of toppings to be on offer in a traditional waffle house—opt for the classic bacon and maple syrup, or try something more unusual, like baba ganoush and fried egg. Whatever you choose, you’re sure to enjoy these Dutch delicacies!

When it comes to food, achieving a Guinness World Record is all about pushing boundaries, whether it’s in terms of size, speed, or sheer creativity. Across the globe, there are a few special restaurants that have done just that. Let’s take a look at a few.

Big Bob Gibson Bar-B-Q — Decatur, Alabama

Big Bob Gibson Bar-B-Q holds the Guinness World Record for the largest barbecue. In 2007, they prepared a staggering 28,523 pounds of barbecue, showcasing their culinary prowess and passion for feeding the masses with their delicious, smoky meats.

The Black Bear Casino Resort — Carlton, Minnesota

Imagine a burger so large it requires a crane to flip. The Black Bear Casino set the world record in 2012 for the largest burger, weighing an incredible 2,014 pounds. It featured a mammoth bun, hundreds of pounds of cheese, onions, pickles, and lettuce, and, of course, the beef patty itself.

Smoque BBQ — Chicago, Illinois

In 2016, Smoque BBQ assembled the longest line of hot dogs, stretching 3,280 feet and featuring 37,000 hot dogs. This feat was not only a celebration of one of America’s favorite foods but also a charitable event. The hot dogs were donated to feed the city’s homeless, blending culinary achievement with community service.
