Passports are really cool, aren’t they? They allow you to travel overseas and see the beauty of the world. But these pocket-sized books are even more incredible than you think. We bet you didn’t know all they can do! Here are three facts you probably didn’t know about passports, but definitely should.

Your Passport Has Identity Theft Deterrents

If your passport was issued after August 2007, you have an e-passport, which has a small integrated chip in the back cover that stores your passport information and a biometric identifier based on your photo. To keep your passport from becoming a victim to high-tech identity theft, there are metallic elements in the cover that make it impossible for it to be digitally read until it’s opened.

If You’ve Gained or Lost Weight, You May Need a New Passport

If your appearance has significantly changed, you may need a new passport. This includes losing weight, gaining weight, facial surgeries, trauma, facial tattoos, or piercings.

Passports Can Be Different Lengths

A standard-issue passport is 28 pages long, but you can request a longer, 53-page passport at no additional cost when applying or renewing it. If you fill up all 52 pages, you’ll have to apply for a new passport even if yours hasn’t expired.

Packing is one of the most stressful parts of a trip. No matter how hard we try, we always struggle to fit everything in our suitcases and we find ourselves overpacking. And when it comes time to return home from our vacation, we don’t have enough room for all of the things we bought. If you’re looking for some tips on how to finally stop overpacking, we’ve got you covered.

Plan an Outfit for Each Day

Look at your itinerary and plan out an outfit for each day you’re vacationing. You’ll have a clearer idea of what you’ll actually end up wearing, instead of packing a bunch of things that will just end up sitting in your suitcase.

Pack Items That Match

When packing, pack things that are in neutral colors so you can mix and match your tops and bottoms. Try and pack items that you can wear with at least two other pieces.

Do Laundry

If you’re staying in a rental with a laundry machine and it’s free, use it. Also, if you’re hotel has a laundry service and it’s cheap, take advantage of it. You can also hand-wash clothing, especially your underwear and socks.

There’s nothing worse than having a terrible seat on an airplane. For some flights, you’re sitting on the plane for hours and cramped into a tight space, which can feel really claustrophobic. But there are ways to get better airplane seats and some of them don’t cost a penny. Here’s how to get a better airplane seat.

Frequent Flyer Program

Joining a frequent flyer program is the best way to get a better seat. Did you know frequent flyer miles can be used for seat upgrades? Use your frequent flyer number when you make your reservations.

Buy Tickets Early

More seats are available when you book your flight earlier. Tuesdays and Wednesdays are less busy days to fly, so the planes are emptier and there are more seats available and there is more room on the plane.

Buy a Seat Upgrade

For an additional fee, many airlines offer economy-class seats with extra legroom. For long flights, it’s definitely worth the upgrade.

Choose the Seat at Booking

The perfect time to choose your seat is when you book your ticket. If there isn’t a seat available that you like, you can return to your reservation at a later date to choose your seat.

Confirm the Seat at Check-In

Check-in up to 24 hours before the flight departs to confirm your seat or use the opportunity to select a better one. You may also find offers or discounted upgrades on premium economy or business-class sears when you check-in.

While in Zurich, Switzerland it’s hard to not feel like you’re in a fairytale. Set on the banks of a river and lake with the Swiss Alps behind it, the natural beauty of the city can’t be missed. While Zurich has become known for being the center of old-school international banking and delicious chocolate, there’s so much more to it. Between the world-class shopping and medieval architecture to the cuisine and ski slopes, the city has just about everything. Here’s what you need to know for planning your Zurich vacation.

Best Time to Visit

Between June and August is the best time to visit because the temperatures stay around the low 70s, which makes it possible to swim in the lake. Summer’s also the most expensive time to visit. December, January, and February, which are winter offseason, are also expensive due to the proximity to the Swiss Alps’ ski slopes. March to May or between September and November are cheaper times to visit, but it’s a lot cooler.

How to Get Around

The best way to get around the city is by foot or by bike. There’s also the city’s tram system, taxis, and Uber. Avoid driving because of the traffic and limited parking.

Where to Stay

Baur au Lac

Located within its own park that overlooks the Alps and Lake Zurich, this 5-star hotel couldn’t be more scenic and the luxuries don’t stop there—the rooms have designer furnishings and heated bathroom floors. The rooms also have large windows that give views of Zurich, the Schanzengraben canal, or the property’s courtyard. The hotel also has its own line of chocolate and has a garage and car repair shop, an on-site florist, a wine boutique, a rooftop fitness center, and a Michelin-starred restaurant.

Widder Hotel

This hotel in the center of the city is a mix of antique and modern. Widder Hotel, a 5-star hotel, has tons of restaurants on the property and daily breakfast is included! The hotel also has a fitness center, a library, meeting facilities, and a business center.

The Dolder Grand

Grand isn’t in this hotel’s name for no reason—The Dodger Grand is in fact grand. The 5-star hotel is located atop a hill and features 19th-century architecture. But nothing about the hotel is old-fashioned—inside there are modern elements like flat-screen TVs and Nespresso coffee machines. Take advantage of the wellness facilities which include a spa with a pool, a gym with personal training and fitness classes, and four running tours. There’s also a Michelin-starred restaurant on-site.

What to Do

Lake Zurich (Zurichsee)

The lake promenade is made up of parks and gardens and when the weather is nice, it’s the perfect way to spend an afternoon. You can take a boat out on the lake, sunbathe, or picnic. There’s also a great running path.

Uetliberg Mountain

Uetliberg Mountain is 2,858 feet above sea level and unsurprisingly, it has some of the best views of Zurich and the Alps. At the top, there are hiking, biking, and sledding trails. You can also paraglide at the mountain’s peak.

Old Town (Altstadt)

This historic, medieval part of town has cobblestone alleys that are alongside some of the best attractions like Great Minister, the Swiss National Museum, and the Museum of Art. Don’t miss the Muhlesteg Footbridge, which has love locks. Old Town also has tons of nightclubs.

What to Eat

Zürcher Geschnetzeltes

One of the most famous dishes in Zurich, zürcher geschnetzeltes, translates to meat cut Zurich-style. It’s veal cooked with mushrooms, cream, onions, and wine and it’s often served with rosti (shredded fried potatoes), rice, or noodles.

Rosti

This national dish is grated potatoes that have been shaped into thin pancakes and then fried in oil. Sometimes bacon or apples are mixed into the mixture. They’re crispy on the outside and soft on the inside.

Cheese Fondue

Cheese fondue may not sound super exciting, but it’s a must when in Switzerland. It’s a lot of melted cheese served with bread, usually gruyère or emmental, mixed with different ingredients like herbs, mushrooms, and tomatoes.

It’s hard to believe that the Spanish colonists who settled in Aruba and the sister islands Bonaire and Curaçao in 1513 nicknamed them the Useless Islands. Known for its stunning white beaches and picturesque desert limestone landscapes, Aruba is a super popular island destination and one of the most popular destination wedding spots. The island is the ideal location for extensive underwater visibility, buried shipwrecks, and coral reefs. Loved by all, Aruba is the place to escape and enjoy the island vibes. Here’s everything you need to know before visiting the Caribbean island.

Best Time to Visit

April to August is the ideal time to visit Aruba. The temperatures range from a low of 78 F to a high of 90 F and it’s when the prices are most reasonable. January to March has great weather, but it’s peak season, so the prices are higher during this time.

How to Get Around

The best way to travel around Aruba is by bus, but most visitors stay close to their resorts and beaches. Cabs are another option and they have fixed rates. To explore the island’s east coast, rent a car or off-terrain vehicle.

Where to Stay

Bucuti & Tara Beach Resort, Aruba

This adult-only 4-star property rests on 14 sandy acres and it’s close to Aruba’s westernmost point. While the hotel is a bit of a splurge, it’s worth it for the private balconies and terraces, views of Eagle Beach, the private cabana on the beach, and the poolside oceanfront restaurant. Other amenities include a free breakfast buffet, a fitness center, a spa, and an infinity pool.

Aruba Marriott Resort & Stellaris Casino

Aruba Marriott Resort & Stellaris Casino, a 4-star hotel has beach access and the Stellaris Casino. The Ritz-Carlton, Aruba

What to Do

Eagle Beach

Eagle Beach is known as the “Low-Rise area” because of its low-to-the-ground hotels and timeshares. This beach is one of the most popular in Aruba and it’s super convenient because you’re probably staying nearby. The beach has white sand and deep blue waters and it’s perfect for water sports.

Palm Beach

If you prefer swimming in the water, head to Palm Beach which has calm turquoise waters and soft, white sand. There are also amazing sunsets and tons of Tiki bars.

Arikok National Park

You’ll find Aruban rattlesnakes, whiptail lizards, iguanas, goats, birds, donkeys, and parakeets at Arikok National Park. Explore the area’s wildlife and check out the caves, limestone cliffs, and sand dunes while you’re at the park. There’s even a natural pool where you can cool off.

What to Eat

Kesio

If you like creme caramel or flan you have to try kesio. It’s Aruba’s take on the dessert and it features a sweet, gooey sauce and moist cake.

Pan Bati

Pan Bati is a slightly sweet flatbread that is similar to a pancake. It’s eaten on its own or with savory dishes like stews or soups.
