The influence of Mayan culture can still be strongly felt in many places in Mexico. With a significant Mayan indigenous population, Mérida, Yucatán is one of the best possible examples, and here’s how you can explore Mayan culture and heritage during your visit.

Dzibilchaltún

Located just 10 miles north of Mérida, Dzibilchaltún is one of the most important Mayan archaeological sites in Yucatán. Temple of the Seven Dolls is the most significant structure on its premises, but there’s also a cenote located on its grounds, where many ancient objects were found.

Mayan World Museum of Mérida

Mérida is home to many amazing museums, but none of them compares to this one. In addition to being a true marvel of modern architecture, the Mayan World Museum of Mérida is worth the visit because it features exhibits of Mayan art, handicrafts, and history.

Parque Zoológico Animaya

If you’re looking for a kid-friendly experience while in Mérida, this zoo is the place to be. Parque Zoológico Animaya offers many attractions you can find in a classic zoo, but what sets it apart is its gigantic observation tower modeled after a Mayan stele.

Most travelers are on the hunt for vibrant pink and blue attractions, but yellow buildings also deserve some time in the spotlight. If you’re a fan of this color, you have to check out Yucatán’s city of Izamal, where yellow buildings shine brighter than anywhere else in the world.

Commonly known as “yellow city” and “city of hills”, Izamal is located about an hour away from Yucatán’s capital of Mérida. This is part of the reason why it became a popular day-trip destination over the years, and you can access it by car or one of the local buses.

The majority of historical buildings in this town are painted yellow, and you won’t run out of vibrant photo opportunities. Convento de San Antonio is the city’s most popular attraction in this color, but you can simply walk around Izamal and see where it takes you.

In addition to yellow buildings, this tiny town is also known as the “city of hills” due to the remains of ancient temple pyramids that can be found here. One of the most important discoveries is the Kinich Kak Moo, dedicated to the Mayan Sun god.

Cenote Suytun is located two hours away from both Cancún and Mérida, and it’s one of the places you should add to your bucket list if you’re planning a road trip around Mexico. It’s not the only beautiful cenote in Yucatán, but it’s becoming increasingly popular with tourists thanks to countless breathtaking photos circulating online.

What makes Suytun so picture-perfect is the symmetrical stone pier leading to its center. To make the whole thing even better, if you’re there at the perfect time, a ray of light from the hole in the ceiling beam will shine upon you.

Most people visit Cenote Suytun to admire its beauty and take pictures, but these are not the only activities it has in store. You can also swim and snorkel, but diving is not allowed since the cenote isn’t deep enough for this activity.
