For those seeking adventure and solitude in the great outdoors, wild camping offers a unique opportunity to immerse oneself in nature and disconnect from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Here are three of the best places around the world to experience the thrill of wild camping.

Isle of Skye, Scotland

The rugged landscapes and dramatic scenery of the Isle of Skye make it a paradise for wild campers. With its towering mountains, pristine lochs, and windswept coastline, Skye offers endless opportunities for exploration and adventure. Pitch your tent beneath the shadow of the Cuillin mountains or beside the sparkling waters of Loch Coruisk for an unforgettable camping experience. Be sure to follow Leave No Trace principles and respect the fragile ecosystem of this stunning island.

Yosemite National Park, USA

Yosemite National Park in California is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts, with its iconic granite cliffs, towering waterfalls, and pristine wilderness. While camping in designated campgrounds is popular, the park also offers opportunities for backcountry camping in remote and secluded areas. Hike into the backcountry and set up camp beside alpine lakes, meandering rivers, or beneath the towering sequoias for a truly immersive wilderness experience. Permits are required for backcountry camping, so be sure to plan ahead and secure your permit in advance.

Rondane National Park, Norway

Nestled in the heart of Norway’s stunning mountain landscape, Rondane National Park is a paradise for wild campers seeking solitude and serenity. With its rugged peaks, expansive plateaus, and crystal-clear lakes, Rondane offers breathtaking vistas at every turn. Pitch your tent beside a mountain stream, beneath the shadow of towering peaks, or on a grassy plateau for a night under the stars you won’t soon forget. Just be sure to familiarize yourself with Norway’s Right to Roam laws and practice ‘Leave No Trace’ principles to minimize your impact on this pristine wilderness.

Wild camping is permitted in some states and countries but banned in others. So if you’re planning a night out under the stars the first thing to do is to check local regulations. Once you know you can travel and wild camp in a certain area, the next thing to do is start packing the essentials. If you’re not sure where to begin, check out this list, which assumes that the absolute essentials such as a tent and sleeping bag are already stowed in the car. These items are things that will make your trip much more comfortable and enjoyable, so you will want to bring them along!

Thick Socks

Bring several pairs of good-quality hiking socks. You never know when your feet are going to get wet, and they can make all the difference on a cold night when you’re trying to keep warm. Socks can also be useful if you need something to wrap small items in, or if you need a bit of extra wadding or stuffing somewhere. They roll up small and are lightweight to carry, so it really does pay to bring a few extra pairs.

Plastic Carrier Bags

Although we’re increasingly trying to move away from using plastic, carrier bags do have their uses. If you have wet or dirty laundry, rubbish, or something that needs to be separated from the rest of your gear, a strong plastic bag can be a lifesaver. Like the socks, they are light and easy to carry.

Head Torch

There is nothing more annoying than rooting around in a dark tent, trying to find something essential like a water bottle or pillow. Make sure you get a bright, adjustable head torch, so you can walk around without having to carry a light.
