]]>So, how do you get started in volunteering abroad?
To plan a trip that incorporates volunteering, start with an online search for organizations that connect traveling volunteers with local institutions. Try to make sure in advance that these are reliable organizations, and get feedback from those who have already volunteered at the place you are traveling to.
Look for activities that suit you and your character. If you really like animals, look for volunteering that incorporates animal care. If you love children, try to find local organizations that are taking care of children.
Try to understand in advance what kind of volunteering is right for you. Would you like to volunteer at a place that combines community housing for the volunteers (for example on farms) or would you like to go to your hotel or hostel at the end of the day?
Whatever option you choose, volunteering abroad is an amazing experience that you will never forget.

Yes, you read it right. Bears! Deep in the hills of Lika-Senj County in Croatia is the Kuterevo Bear Sanctuary established in order to improve the lives of the bear population in the country that suffers gravely from human presence. The center is open for visitors and for volunteers who help orphaned bears develop safely in their natural habitat.
Live in basic conditions with an international group of volunteers with a beautiful backdrop and help maintain the sanctuary. An incredible adventure.
The sanctuary, deep in the rainforests of New Zealand, has great short-term programs for volunteers who are interested in the unique wildlife and forestry in New Zealand.
The week-long volunteering program is really a fantastic educational opportunity to spend 7 days in the jungle and be part of this ecosystem’s conservation.

]]>Luckily, there are a few simple steps to making sure you choose the right volunteer program for you. Here’s where to start.
Volunteer programs need you and although they will be trying to promote what they are offering, they can either do so in a way that is honest or in a way that is patronizing to the locals and dishonest to you.
Look out for the kind of language the website uses. If they make claims like “you can change the world” or “starving local children need you” then they are probably trying to rip you off by boosting your ego.
If you are volunteering so you can actually do something worthwhile, don’t choose a placement where you don’t have the skills. If you’ve never taught in your life and want to do a teaching placement, check first that your skill level is suitable. Going over to “have a go” at something you can’t do because you have the attitude the people will be grateful regardless is incredibly condescending.
If the company you want to volunteer with have no interview process and just care whether or not you can pay, they are probably not as ethical as they are making out. If the placement cares about the work they are doing, they want to make sure they pick the right people with the right intentions. If it’s too easy, don’t bother.
Generally, you should be able to trust your instinct and get a feel for whether the company actually cares about their work. Don’t shy away from asking questions but most of all, do your research and check your own intentions too. If you want your experience to be truly worthwhile, it’s important that you are volunteering for the right reasons and not for a Facebook update.
