Seongsan Ilchulbong, otherwise known as “Sunrise Peak”, is a tuff cone formed by volcanic eruptions five thousand years ago. It is like a little island located just off of Jeju Island in South Korea.

Locals say that it resembles a huge castle built in the sea. It stands at 182 meters tall, with a colossal bowl shape that looks like an imposing fortress.

The site is considered to be of acute geological interest. The peculiar volcanic rock formations afford valuable insight into how volcanic ash sediments into rock structures. If you’re a geologist or interested in the archaic history of our earth’s formation, this place is well worth a visit!

Seongsan Ilchulbong is also home to a great array of flora. There are 220 different species of plants on the Tuff Cone, six of which are very rare. In addition to these rare species of plant, there are also over 300 different species of marine algae to discover.

Due to Seongsan Ilchulbong’s interesting natural history and flourishing plant life, the Tuff Cone was made a UNESCO World heritage Site.

You can visit this remarkable place yourself for an entry fee and climb up its broad flanks.

Volcanoes occupy a special place in our collective imagination. They are wondrous natural structures, stretching back in geological time to the murky depths of our origins and possess a terrible power of destruction. For these reasons, good volcano experiences can be among the most thrilling. Here are three unique volcano adventures you’ve got to experience.

Aogashima, Japan

Located on an island about 200 miles south of Tokyo, Aogashima is a sleepy, traditional Japanese town built within an active volcano. Half the population was killed around 230 years ago when the last eruption took place. But the villagers won’t let the volcano master their lives. Paying a visit to this unique town will change your perspective forever.

Pyrenees of Girona

One of the most beautiful regions in Europe, you can take a hot air balloon ride over the Pyrenees of Girona volcanoes. Feel like a bird soaring through the air with a god’s eye view of this magisterial natural beauty.

Nicaragua Volcano Surfing

Volcano surfing is an extreme sport where you board down the slope of an active or inactive volcano. One of the most popular places for volcano boarding is Nicaragua in Central America.

You may have heard about this beautiful park, but thought it is just another National Park. Here are three things you should know about Katmai that will get you to book your trip right away.

How You Get There

Katmai National Park and Preserve is an American national park located in the south of Alaska. An interesting fact about its location is that you cannot get to Katmai Park by road. To visit the park you will need to go by boat or light plane.

Bear Cam

Not sure you’re that interested in Katmai’s biggest attraction, the bears? The park has web cameras set up that allow you to follow the wildlife at a few locations around the park, like Brooks Falls where they fish for salmon, and the Lower River where the mothers and cubs hang out in the summer.

Volcanoes

The park is actually named after one of its active volcanoes, Mount Katmai. In 1912 there was a significant eruption that gave the valley formed near the mountain the name “Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes.” The park has very few maintained trails but many go backcountry hiking, as long as you’re properly prepared, this can be a trip of a lifetime.

One of the hottest and lowest places on earth, salt flats, a lava lake, and colorful chemical geysers are just some of the things you will see in the Danakil Depression in Northeastern Ethiopia. This unique place, where many natural phenomena come together, is sometimes compared to Mars.

The Danakil Depression is on the list of the top 3 hottest places on earth, and while Death Valley, CA has the highest recorded temperature at 134.5 Fahrenheit (56.7 Celsius), Danakil has the highest average year-round temperature at 94 degrees (34.5 Celsius)!

One of the coolest attractions in the area is an active volcano that you are able to climb and peer over into a bubbling lava lake. The red fire and intense smoke will make you feel like you are on another planet, and it is one of only 6 lava lakes in the world.

The hot springs and chemical reactions in the geysers combine for a colorful and unique landscape. Lower down is the area of the salt flats where each year the tiny amount of rain causes the upper layer of salt to replenish after the natives harvest giant salt chunks to sell in nearby markets. If you’re lucky you can catch a glimpse of the Afar people, who survive in the hottest habitable place on Earth.

Central America is home to some of the world’s most impressive volcanoes. Although many are active, travelers still have the chance to hike to the top for an unforgettable experience.

Acetenango (Guatemala)

The 3rd highest peak in Central America stands at 3976 meters. Acetenango boasts impressive views day and night. Although dormant, its neighbor, Fuego, is extremely active and can be seen shooting out lava and smoke.

Cerro Negro (Nicaragua)

The youngest volcano in Central America is ideal for thrill hunters. Volcano boarding here is ranked 2nd on CNN’s thrill seeker’s bucket list and for good reason. After the steep climb to the top, borders can slide at 80 km per hour back down again.

Masaya (Nicaragua)

Masaya holds one of six volcanic lava lakes in the world. It is worth a day trip from the colonial town of Granada and is an unmissable attraction in Nicaragua.

Volcan Concepcion (Nicaragua)

Concepcion is the ideal climb for lovers of jungle trekking and a challenge. Located on Ometepe Island, what starts off as a hike through monkey-filled trees concludes with a brutal ascent through a sulfur cloud. It’s not for the faint of heart.

Arenal Volcano (Costa Rica)

As one of Costa Rica’s most famous tourist destinations, Arenal offers hot springs, natural hikes and the chance to see sloths close up. What more could you want?

Spain’s highest point, however, is different.

Mt. Teide, the tallest mountain in Spain, is located on the island of Tenerife in the Canary Islands. The peak is situated at 12,198 feet above sea level, making Tenerife the tenth-highest island in the world. While that might seem difficult to reach, Teide has a cable car that makes this imposing mountain accessible for everyone.

The Teide Cable Car was inaugurated in 1971 with two stations. One begins the route and is located at the base of the mountain at an elevation of 7,730 feet and the next one is located near the top of the mountain at 11,663 feet. In only eight minutes, the cable car rises almost 4,000 feet vertically.

From the top station, it is only a few hundred more feet vertically to reach the top, a walk that can be done in about 15 to 20 minutes. From here, spectacular views of the island of Tenerife as well as the Atlantic Ocean are available. It’s definitely an unforgettable sight.

If you’re craving an unusual journey, perhaps Dallol, Ethiopia is your perfect destination.

The unique thing about this place is that it’s the hottest (and driest) inhabited location on the planet.

Dallol Desert is located in the Afar Region of north-east Ethiopia and is a home of few active volcanoes, including Arta Ale. There are multiple lava lakes and sulfur pools that give the area its unique colorful look.

You may think that the photos have been enhanced using the software, but they are actually as real as possible.

Visiting Dallol is an adventure that can potentially be dangerous. If you decide to do it, be prepared for hours of driving, taking extra steps to stay hydrated, and sleeping in very basic accommodations. Don’t attempt to go anywhere without a local guide and armed escort.
