The capital of Ecuador, the high-altitude city of Quito, is one of our favorite cities in South America. This special place blends the old and the new, mixing one of the best-preserved colonial Old Towns in the world with a vibrant modern spirit that is unbelievably contagious.

Quito has plenty to see and do, but if you’re looking to get a true glimpse at what the city is like, here are three things that you must do.

Old Town

Quito’s Old Town, which has been immaculately preserved since its days as a splendid center of activity during Ecuador’s period as a Spanish colony, is a place to get lost in. Here, you’ll never get tired of walking through 18th-century roads and visiting small shops and little restaurants.

TelefériQo

Quito’s location in the foothills of the Andes Mountains puts it in very close proximity to high mountain peaks. The city’s aerial lift costs only $17 for a round trip ticket that takes you from the city to the Cruz Loma lookout of the Pichincha Volcano, offering spectacular views of the city and hiking experience for those with experience.

Basilica del Voto Nacional

Quito’s main cathedral is a neo-Gothic gem of architecture which was built at the end of the 19th century. The largest example of neo-Gothic architecture in the Americas, visitors can marvel at its cavernous interior or walk to the top of its towers to see panoramic views of Quito.

Ecuador’s capital is not just a gateway to the Galapagos Islands. It is an area rich with 16th and 17th-century architecture, constructed on an ancient Incan city. There are so many things to do here so try planning your vacation to make sure you don’t miss the very best Quito has to offer.

Old Town

Quito’s Old Town is literally steeped in history, hailed as having the best-preserved historic center in Latin America. Named the first city in the world as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, explore the half-century-old streets lined with incredible architecture.

Basilica del Voto Nacional

This is the largest neo-Gothic church in the Americas and is definitely worth a visit, even if you are not normally interested in churches. If you are brave enough climb the highest tower to experience incredible views over Quito. Watch out – the route is quite hazardous!

Cable Car Into the Andes

Take the TeleferiQo from a busy city center way up high into the tranquil mountainous Andes. In just 18 minutes you will be transported from a crowded tourist area to an area that is the complete opposite. Nature at its very best.

The Viewpoint El Panecillo

This viewpoint is the midpoint in Quito, dividing the North and South. It is one of the best places to get magnificent views of the mountainous areas and surrounding volcanoes. You can also see a giant Virgin Mary statue.

Quito’s Museums

There are more than 50 museums to be found in this city. Every one of them is filled with the fascinating history and culture of this incredible visit. For those that want to get a better understanding of Quito’s history, take a museum tour for the day.
