Most city centers in the West are somewhat divided into neighborhoods, each having its own history, architecture, and unique character. Some of us like finding ourselves in neighborhoods that are just out of the mainstream, seeing the local quirky crowd, and learning about the local fringe or sub-culture. There are a few little tips to help you discover where to go to get that fringe vibe.

Follow the Music

One of the best ways to find the right neighborhood to learn about a local community is through live gigs. Whether online or on notice boards, look for live gigs of bands you’ve never heard of. Pay attention to the terms in their posters to get an idea of their age and vibe.

Thrift, Vintage, or Second Hand

Thrift shops are a great indicator of the local crowd, specifically the local kind that doesn’t have a central sorting center that spreads the merchandise to different branches. Pop in to see the style the locals grew out of, and the price tags attached to the discarded items. If the shops are vintage and priced like designer apparel, this area isn’t quite what you are looking for.

The Walls

A quick and easy “test” of a neighborhood is the state of its walls. Are they clean? Are they covered in posters, graffiti, or commissioned murals? Look at what the art has to say as well, it will tell you who made and why!

Most people think rain on their vacation would make it miserable, but many of us who see very little rain during their everyday life learned to appreciate the damp weather when touring cities. What could be better than an excuse to stop for a treat in a café during a romantic getaway? Here are a few places where that’s likely to happen:

Bergen, Norway

Take a walk around this picturesque city, and plan ahead to step into the many free museums and galleries open, many with on-site cafés, all with spectacular views.

Taipei, Taiwan

Filled with beautiful temples museums and theatres, it shouldn’t be hard to spend a mostly indoors day in the Taiwanese capital.

Juneau (Alaska), USA

Plan your visits in the home of the Alaskan Brewery and Amalga Distiller, and if the rain persists, pop into the Macaulay Salmon Hatchery for a very local tourist experience.

Cologne, Germany

Build a tour day and visit a few of the many cathedrals in Cologne, including the main cathedral in the city, as well as Gross St. Martin, and the Shrine of the Three Kings. If you need a break, drop into the Cologne Chocolate Museum.

One of Ireland’s most popular cultural icons is leprechauns. Not necessarily the small ginger-bearded men we imagine from popular culture, they can be a wonderful entryway to Irish folklore. That is exactly the approach taken by The National Leprechaun Museum in Dublin City and why we think you should be sure to check it out.

The museum makes sure to link up what we all already know about leprechauns with the roots and origins of the folk tales about these mischievous magical creatures. They even teach us what it may feel like to be so little, in the most fun way possible!

The museum offers both day and night tours, suitable for different crowds. For families with children 7 years old and up, the day tours focus on the magic of Irish folk tales and mythology. Visitors get to walk through a rainbow and listen to stories about real and mythological Ireland.

The night tours are a different story, titled DarkLand, and only available for 18 years old and older. DarkLand tells the scarier, more serious side of the Irish fairy world. The guides perform as storytellers, sharing some less familiar aspects of Irish folk and culture.
