The post World Heritage Hot Spots That You Might Not Know appeared first on Traveler Master.
]]>While countries like Italy and China probably aren’t a surprise for boasting many sites on the list, other smaller and more overlooked countries don’t get as much love for their richness. Here are three places that might surprise you.
Despite being a relatively unvisited country in southeastern Europe with only 7 million residents, Bulgaria is rich in World Heritage Sites, containing 10. Some of the most standout places to visit include the Boyana Church in Sofia, the ancient city of Nessebar, and the Madara Rider rock carvings.
South Africa also has ten World Heritage Sites, with a special focus on natural and cultural landscapes such as its Fossil Hominid Sites, the Cape Floral Region, and the Mapungubwe Cultural Landscape. You can also visit Robben Island, where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned.
Would you believe that Tunisia, a small country in North Africa of only 11 million inhabitants, has eight World Heritage Sites? Its history as an important part of the Roman Empire weighs heavily on its list of sites, with the ancient city of Carthage and the Amphitheatre of El Jem reflecting this history.

]]>Like many celebrated cultural phenomena, it can sometimes feel that the cafés in Vienna have become overpriced tourist traps with massive queues, giving the impression that the authenticity is gone.
One very central café is Aida Café Konditorei, serving Viennese classics at great prices, and its prime location 5 minutes’ walk from Vienna’s opera house.
Easily identified from the outside by its pink facade, Aida Café Konditorei’s interior is simple and cheerful with plain wooden furniture, decorated by the bright colors of pastries and baked treats.
While the decor may be simple, the cakes are anything but. They serve delicious cultural staples like the sachertorte, an Austrian chocolate cake; Apple Strudel with cream; and Viennese Mozart Cake, alongside their excellent coffee or a cup of homemade Hot Chocolate, with or without rum.
There’s little more you can wish for when you sit at Aida Café Konditorei with a delicious cake. Trust us, we know.

]]>So, why is Djenne so interesting?
Many consider Djenne to be the oldest still-inhabited city in the entire African continent. It’s been around since around the 3rd century BC. The town was established in the floodlands of the Niger and Bani Rivers, giving it the ability to sustain agriculture despite the dry climate.
Djenne is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and as a place of important value for the study of archeology due to its unique Sudanese Adobe architecture which characterizes nearly all of the town’s buildings.
The Djenne Mosque is the most important and well-known building in the town of 30,000, as it is an important gathering place for the town’s residents and a beautiful example of the city’s quintessential architecture.
Built with sun-dried mud bricks, the current mosque was built in 1907 and has survived for over a century.
The mosque isn’t the only building in Djenne that was built with this architectural technique, however. Nearly all of the homes and businesses of the city also feature this unique construction method.
Djenne is a must-see if you love architecture and want to check out an off-the-beaten path destination.

]]>While it might not have spectacular beaches or be as famous as cities like Alicante and Valencia nearby, Elche is a fascinating city that’s definitely worth getting to know.
Parts of Spain, including where Elche is located, were ruled by the Moors for several centuries until nearly 1500. Elche itself was under their rule throughout the Middle Ages, until 1244. Their fingerprints still remain in this city.
In Elche, you can find “El Palmeral,” a massive plantation of date palms that is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Moors implemented an irrigation system that allowed this grove to grow in Europe due to Elche’s warm climate. It’s the only date palm plantation in all of Europe and is a beautiful and fascinating place to walk around and visit.
Elche’s Old Town also has plenty of signs of its Moorish past. By strolling around its pedestrian-only streets, you can see architecture and blue domes that are clearly inspired by Arabic architecture.
Believe it or not, you can also visit an underground Arab bath complex dating back to 1150. It has been excavated and can now be visited, providing a fascinating look at Elche’s past.
Be sure to check out Elche if you’re in Spain!
