UNESCO’s list of World Heritage Sites is one of the most valuable resources for any traveler out there. The organization’s list gives travelers a point of reference for seeing some of the most historically, naturally, and culturally important places on the planet.

While countries like Italy and China probably aren’t a surprise for boasting many sites on the list, other smaller and more overlooked countries don’t get as much love for their richness. Here are three places that might surprise you.

Bulgaria

Despite being a relatively unvisited country in southeastern Europe with only 7 million residents, Bulgaria is rich in World Heritage Sites, containing 10. Some of the most standout places to visit include the Boyana Church in Sofia, the ancient city of Nessebar, and the Madara Rider rock carvings.

South Africa

South Africa also has ten World Heritage Sites, with a special focus on natural and cultural landscapes such as its Fossil Hominid Sites, the Cape Floral Region, and the Mapungubwe Cultural Landscape. You can also visit Robben Island, where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned.

Tunisia

Would you believe that Tunisia, a small country in North Africa of only 11 million inhabitants, has eight World Heritage Sites? Its history as an important part of the Roman Empire weighs heavily on its list of sites, with the ancient city of Carthage and the Amphitheatre of El Jem reflecting this history.

One of the best places in the world to experience and learn about the unique ecosystems of South America is Peru’s UNESCO-recognised Biosphere Reserve and  World Heritage Site, Manú National Park.

Created in 1973, this park dedicates a part of its land to indigenous Amazonian communities, who choose to live in isolation from locals and visitors.

Manú National Park offers visitors a few different tours including custom tours for those who have a specific visit in mind. Fun activities offered in the tours are rafting, zip-lining, visiting the local Howler Monkeys territories, and encountering some of the forests other incredible fauna such as giant otters, brown-throated sloths, and maybe meet a puma!

The park includes a few lodges as a form of accommodation, which guarantees waking up every morning to spectacular views of mountains, lakes, and other jungle scenes. Around the lodges are a few lookouts where different animals can be viewed without the need to trek very far, and the staff will guide you through the area and share their vast knowledge of the ecological preservation done at the Biosphere Reserve.

The park is open all year round, but it’s recommended to visit from April to November during the dry season.

Vienna is renowned for its café culture. Any tourist guide will tell you about the importance of coffee houses and the communities formed in them to the city’s life. They’re so important, in fact, that in 2011, Viennese Coffee House Culture was listed as “Intangible Cultural Heritage” by UNESCO.

Like many celebrated cultural phenomena, it can sometimes feel that the cafés in Vienna have become overpriced tourist traps with massive queues, giving the impression that the authenticity is gone.

One very central café is Aida Café Konditorei, serving Viennese classics at great prices, and its prime location 5 minutes’ walk from Vienna’s opera house.

Easily identified from the outside by its pink facade, Aida Café Konditorei’s interior is simple and cheerful with plain wooden furniture, decorated by the bright colors of pastries and baked treats.

While the decor may be simple, the cakes are anything but. They serve delicious cultural staples like the sachertorte, an Austrian chocolate cake; Apple Strudel with cream; and  Viennese Mozart Cake, alongside their excellent coffee or a cup of homemade Hot Chocolate, with or without rum.

There’s little more you can wish for when you sit at Aida Café Konditorei with a delicious cake. Trust us, we know.

Located on the banks of the Swan River on Australia’s west coast is the stunning city of Perth. The largest city in Western Australia might be far away from more common travel destinations like Sydney and Brisbane, but you can’t pass up an opportunity to travel to this beautiful city.

Perth is located on the ocean, which gives it a ton of beautiful beaches. While travelers can find plenty of other activities to do in the city, it’s always nice to be able to visit spectacular beaches like Cottesloe if you want to take it easy.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BxlCGrOiBSL/

If you’re looking to go outside but not spend time in the sand, be sure to check out the Kings Park and Botanic Garden next to the city’s river. Here, you’ll find one of the most beautifully-landscaped urban parks on Earth and you’ll enjoy Perth’s beauty at its finest.

For those that want to top off their trip with a cultural excursion or two, Perth isn’t lacking in options either. Visitors to the big western city have options such as the Fremantle Prison, a UNESCO World Heritage site that served as a jail for English prisoners during Australia’s time as a penal colony.

Perth has tons of interesting sites, beautiful weather, and an idyllic setting. What are you waiting for?

I spent last week visiting the national parks of Maine. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I’ve been to Maine before, but I didn’t spend that much time there. I drove through the state several years ago on my way to Newfoundland. This time I was able to properly explore the state and visit several of the sites which I had been wanting to see. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The big star of Maine has to be Acadia National Park. It is the only national park in the Northeast part of the United States. It is well known for its rugged coastal photos. What I didn’t know about the park until last week was how much of of the park was surrounded by towns and houses. I didn’t realize just how connected Bar Harbor was to the park. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ In addition to Acadia, I also visited the newly created Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument. It was a totally different experience than Acadia, as it really is up in the wilderness of the northern woods. I saw an estimate that only about 10 cars enter the park each day, as opposed to the many thousands which are in Acadia. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I’m making progress on my National Park quest. I now been to 54/61 of the national parks proper, and 199/419 of the total National Park service Sites. I might be able to finish visiting all 61 parks this year as the remaining parks I have yet to visit are all pretty easy to get to. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #everythingeverywhere #findyourpark #nps #maine #acadia #mainething #visitmaine

¡Hola from the Trujillo, Spain! ⠀ I’ve spent the last week exploring the highlights of the Extremadura region of Spain. This is a region which is rich in history going back to Celtic and Roman times, and is one of the most unexplored regions of Spain by foreign tourists. ⠀ My travels have taken me to the village of Guadeloupe, which I saw the historic Monastery of Santa Maria, the town of Cáceres, where I explored the Moorish and Renaissance architecture of the city, and Merida, with its incredible Roman ruins. ⠀ I’ll be posting more from each town over the next few weeks as well as posting more in-depth articles about each on the website. As interesting as each town in individually, they are even more interesting when you see them in the historical context of the rest of the Iberian Peninsula. The Islamic influences are similar to what I’ve seen in Grenada and Cordoba. The Roman artifacts are part of a continuum with what I’ve previously seen in Tarragona. The Renaissance architecture is in line with what I’ve seen in Madrid and other cities. ⠀ Today I’m in the historic city of Trujillo, which might have the best city center of all the cities I’ve visited. It is noteworthy as the birth place of several Spanish Conquistadors, in particular Pizarro, who is the subject of the large statue seen in the Plaza Mayor (shown in photo). ⠀ Tomorrow I’m off to Madrid by way of the Mercury mine in Almaden, which, not surprisingly, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site (My 382nd). ⠀ #VisitSpain  #extremadura #spain #guadalupe #unesco #worldheritage #worldheritagesite

Located in the heart of West Africa is the town of Djenne, located in central Mali. While you’ve probably never heard of this place, the fact of the matter is that it’s one of Africa’s must-visit destinations.

So, why is Djenne so interesting?

Many consider Djenne to be the oldest still-inhabited city in the entire African continent. It’s been around since around the 3rd century BC. The town was established in the floodlands of the Niger and Bani Rivers, giving it the ability to sustain agriculture despite the dry climate.

Djenne is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and as a place of important value for the study of archeology due to its unique Sudanese Adobe architecture which characterizes nearly all of the town’s buildings.

The Djenne Mosque is the most important and well-known building in the town of 30,000, as it is an important gathering place for the town’s residents and a beautiful example of the city’s quintessential architecture.

Built with sun-dried mud bricks, the current mosque was built in 1907 and has survived for over a century.

The mosque isn’t the only building in Djenne that was built with this architectural technique, however. Nearly all of the homes and businesses of the city also feature this unique construction method.

Djenne is a must-see if you love architecture and want to check out an off-the-beaten path destination.

Far off of the radar of most guidebooks and Spain travel guides is the city of Elche, located in the south of the Valencian Community.

While it might not have spectacular beaches or be as famous as cities like Alicante and Valencia nearby, Elche is a fascinating city that’s definitely worth getting to know.

Parts of Spain, including where Elche is located, were ruled by the Moors for several centuries until nearly 1500. Elche itself was under their rule throughout the Middle Ages, until 1244. Their fingerprints still remain in this city.

In Elche, you can find “El Palmeral,” a massive plantation of date palms that is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Moors implemented an irrigation system that allowed this grove to grow in Europe due to Elche’s warm climate. It’s the only date palm plantation in all of Europe and is a beautiful and fascinating place to walk around and visit.

Elche’s Old Town also has plenty of signs of its Moorish past. By strolling around its pedestrian-only streets, you can see architecture and blue domes that are clearly inspired by Arabic architecture.

Believe it or not, you can also visit an underground Arab bath complex dating back to 1150. It has been excavated and can now be visited, providing a fascinating look at Elche’s past.

Be sure to check out Elche if you’re in Spain!

If you really want to travel somewhere but you are bored of the mainstream traveling destinations and want to experience something new and totally unusual then you should start checking off the places that are listed as the UNESCO World Heritage. These are just some of the most interesting ones:

The Forbidden City, China

The Forbidden City is a palace complex located in central Beijing, China. It served as a home to emperors thought the Ming and Qing dynasty, for about 500 years. Today it is a Palace Museum opened to visitors.

Kasubi Tombs, Uganda

Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage since 2001, these tombs of Buganda Kings are Kampala’s (Uganda’s capital) most visited sights. It was built from wooden poles, thatch, reed, wattle, and daub in 1882 and was converted into the royal burial ground in 1884.

Lake Bled, Slovenia

This nature’s beauty, located near Ljubljana, capital of Slovenia, is one of the most romantic lakes in Europe. Mixed with glacial and tectonic origins it has landed itself under the UNESCO protection. The biggest attraction is the small island in the middle of the lake.

 Angkor Wat, Cambodia

Angkor Wat, with its 162.6 hectares, is the largest religious monument in the world. Originally it was constructed as a Hindu temple dedicated to the god Vishnu in the 12th century, however, later it transformed into a Buddhist temple. It is Cambodia’s prime attraction for visitors, and it also appears on its national flag.
