2020 might not be the best time for travelers as we are currently dealing with a global health crisis which has made travel a difficult proposition for many. That doesn’t mean that things will always be this way, though, as there is hope to believe that we’ll be back to traveling on a fairly normal scale in the not-so-distant future.

Are you missing travel and looking to find inspiration while stuck at home? Why not pop these three movies in and get yourself excited about your next journey?

The Way

The Way is a 2010 movie starring Martin Sheen which focuses on a man who attempts to honor his deceased son by walking the famed St. James Way between France and Spain. This movie will transport you to tiny European towns and show you just how beautiful a track can become.

The Motorcycle Diaries

Continuing the theme of traveling the slow way around a continent is The Motorcycle Diaries, a film that tells the story of the travels of a young Che Guevara around South America before becoming a political figure. Seeing the best of this continent will make you want to book a trip to this region of the world as soon as possible.

Lost in Translation

A classic Bill Murray and Scarlett Johannson film which explores themes such as loneliness, relationships, and existentialism, Lost in Translation’s stunning cinematography of the Japanese city of Tokyo from the perspective of two Americans who explore this megalopolis is sure to make you want to travel here whenever the situation gets a little better.

San Francisco based travel writer Kelly Lack is considered an alum at some of the top lifestyle companies, having worked with brands as big as Cosmopolitan, Harper’s BAZAAR, and Martha Stewart.

Aside from writing, Lack also consults on marketing, content strategy, and social-media, with clients that include Zappos, Conde Nast Traveler. So when it comes to her Instagram page, you know you’re in for a treat. “I wasn’t a super-early adopter [of Instagram],” she admitted once in an interview with Lonny. “When I finally did, it was because it seemed like hearing about it from friends had reached a fever pitch. I thought the real-time peek into someone’s life—and the cool places they were going—sounded intriguing.”

Jump forward some years later, and with tens of thousands of followers, Lack clearly knows how to to travel with style. Her Instagram page includes photos from anywhere and everywhere around the world, but in the end she always comes back to California. “When I’m traveling, I go nuts trying to capture it all from sweeping scenic shots to quiet moments in markets to the comings and goings of locals,” she admits.

“I love an adventure,” she adds, “I get bored when standing still. I also love how [traveling] smashes the pre-conceived notions you have about the world, even when you don’t realize you have them! We’re all human, trying to get by and struggling with and finding joy in the same things—only in different settings.” Whether planning to travel to California, or just idly scrolling on you phone – we recommend following her.

Vacations are great but if you are planning on getting more out of your next trip, you need to head beyond the resort and trade in some comfort for adventure. Here are our top tips for going on an inspirational journey rather than a beach vacation.

Chat With Locals

If you want to really get to know the place you are visiting, chat with the locals rather than foreign tour guides. Eat where the locals eat and drink where the locals drink. Keep your mind open and greet people in their native language. You’ll discover a whole new side of your destination this way and have far more memorable experiences.

Prepare

Travel insurance. Vaccines. Visas. Say it over and over again until it sticks. You cannot travel without these three things. Find out what vaccinations you need based on where you are going and if you need a visa, apply in advance. You can’t have life-changing memories if you get turned down at the border.

Be Flexible

Having an itinerary is great but if you want to embrace spontaneity, you need to be flexible. Allow yourself the freedom to change plans last minute, jump on a tour bus with some friends you met at your hostel and seize the day. Choose flexible tickets where possible and don’t book things up too far in advance.

The Jumanji films take place in the tropical jungle of Hawaii, Kualoa Ranch. In the remake, the cast head to Papaikou Falls in one exhilarating scene.

Indiana Jones: Raiders of the Lost Ark

The Amazon jungle in the Indiana Jones classic belongs to the beautiful landscapes of the Huleia River in Kaua’i.
