It’s time to look at the way we travel and explore the world and take vacations in a more sustainable, eco-friendly way. The way we’ve been traveling is not good for the environment and we’re not saying you shouldn’t travel, but there are ways to be a better tourist and plan a planet-friendly vacation. Here are five ways to do so.

Bring Reusable Containers

Instead of bringing bottles for your beauty supplies, fill reusable containers with shampoos, conditioners, and moisturizers to prevent the use of single-use plastics.

Choose Trains and Buses Over Flying

Rather than flying, if you’re traveling domestically, opt for trains and buses over planes. They’ll add adventure and excitement to your travels.

Eat Local and Seasonal

Eat local produce that’s in season to support a more sustainable food industry as well as small businesses. Check out farmers’ markets, farm-to-restaurants, farm cafes, and wineries.

Support Local Businesses

Shop at local markets, eat at family-run restaurants, and stay at guesthouses while traveling to support local businesses. Also, buy souvenirs from artisan markets to support local artists.

Take Walks and Cycle

Explore cities with walking tours and sightsee on bikes. You’ll be getting great exercise while reducing carbon emissions.

Tourist traps, or establishments or attractions created for the sole purpose of attracting tourists (and their money), rather than being authentic parts of local culture, are pretty much universally agreed-upon as being the worst. Yet they seem to get trickier and trickier, meaning that most of us travel-lovers have fallen for at least one in our lives. Well, to help you avoid making that same mistake again, here are some tourist traps you should definitely avoid.

Hollywood Boulevard, Los Angeles

Sure, the Walk of Fame with all of its golden stars is pretty cool, but did you know that these are located on a plain old shopping street that would be just the same as any other if it weren’t for the dozens of people trying to take advantage of tourists by selling tickets to lame things or photos with guys in cheap costumes?

Times Square, New York

Similarly, Times Square in New York is basically the definition of a tourist trap, with nothing but overpriced chain restaurants and people trying to get money out of your pocket—legally or otherwise.

The London Eye, London

It may be a pretty iconic London landmark, but the London Eye isn’t much fun. Not only is it absurdly expensive, but you’ll get shoved into a capsule with 20 people, many of whom are screaming kids.

Florence is the capital city of the Tuscany region of Italy. It has beautiful rivers and mountains surrounding the city, as well as incredible architecture, galleries, museums, and more. There is so much to do, see, and of course, eat in this stunning city, so get ready for your Italian dreams to come true.

Major Sites

Florence has some very famous sites that you cannot miss out on, but as for most things in the city, you have to pay and get your tickets in advance. Most of the attractions in the city cost money, so plan ahead and decide what you want your itinerary to look like.

The Duomo is an outstandingly beautiful cathedral with a terracotta tiled dome that can be seen all throughout the city. The lines get pretty crazy for this, so either go early in the morning or you buy your ticket ahead of time. This is luckily one of the sites that you can really enjoy just as much from the outside as from the inside.

Piazzale Michelangelo is a little bit of a hike, but the views of the entire city you get make the climbing worth it. The best time to go is when the sun is setting, but you really enjoy this overlook at any time of day. They also sell very reasonably priced bottles of wine, and it can be one of the most romantic spots in the city.

Piazza della Signoria is a square close to the Gucci Museum and is on your way to the Uffizi. It has a large sculpture hall including the fake David!

The famous Uffizi is the biggest museum in Florence and has many famous artworks like the Birth of Venus. It is also home to an extensive collection by Michelangelo’s and should definitely be planned in advance, sometimes they are booked for a couple of days in a row!

Food

If you’re going to Italy, you need to come with an empty stomach. With all the pasta, pizza, and paninis, there is something for everyone. For paninis, you have to go to Antico Vinaio. This is one of the most famous panini places in the city, so around lunchtime, there will be quite a line. However, the sandwiches are so delicious and you have such incredible spreads, cheeses, and meats to choose from, it’s worth it.

If you are looking to try the Florentine steak, you have to go Trattoria 13 Gobbi. Just beware that if you don’t like rare steak, this dish may not be the one for you. They also have incredible rigatoni bolognese and more!

Of course, you can’t go to Italy without getting gelato. One of the most famous gelaterias is even on the same road as Antico Vinaio, so you know you’re in the right place. The name is Gelateria Dei Neri, and has so many flavors your head will be spinning. Try something different like a ricotta gelato, it is so creamy you won’t be able to imagine your life without it.
