]]>Sure, the Walk of Fame with all of its golden stars is pretty cool, but did you know that these are located on a plain old shopping street that would be just the same as any other if it weren’t for the dozens of people trying to take advantage of tourists by selling tickets to lame things or photos with guys in cheap costumes?
Similarly, Times Square in New York is basically the definition of a tourist trap, with nothing but overpriced chain restaurants and people trying to get money out of your pocket—legally or otherwise.
It may be a pretty iconic London landmark, but the London Eye isn’t much fun. Not only is it absurdly expensive, but you’ll get shoved into a capsule with 20 people, many of whom are screaming kids.

]]>Matera has one of the longest continuous inhabitancies in the world, with evidence of population even 7000 years ago. There, you can see the prehistoric caves where Italy’s ancestors lived.
Interestingly, Matera was an infamous slum until only 70 years ago and residents were still living in caves made up like houses. The very poor population there lived without modern amenities until a book brought attention to their conditions and things improved.
The most famous and beautiful part of Matera is the Sassi, which is the area of the ancient city with its winding streets and overlapping houses. Many Italians like to walk among the Sassi, getting lost in its stone alleyways and snapping photos along the way. If you want to feel like a part of the country, this is a great place to visit.

]]>Chebika is a beautiful oasis of quaint waterfalls and sparkling streams in the Sahara desert. It was used as a film set in Star Wars episode IV and as a result feels strangely familiar.
This town was once a small fishing village, but it’s now one of the top tourist attractions in Tunisia. Its warm blue waters are perfect for water sports and the historic old town is a great example of Islamic architecture.
This quaint village is built on top of pearl white cliffs and affords tremendous views down on the shimmering sea below. Watch the glowing sunset from lovely white and blue painted houses and feel yourself at one with your environment.
This ex-military port and world heritage site is located right on the Tunisian coastline. Its soft sandy beaches and ancient architecture make it one of the most popular tourist destinations. It’s also home to the Great Mosque—a great example of Islamic religious art.

Most of us want to explore the life of the locals and try the foods they eat, shop at their local stores, etc. And while finding a beautiful place that isn’t on top-ten lists is definitely awarding, there’s no one right way to travel and nobody can say that this is better than sticking to the proven ways and checking out the main attractions you’ve always wanted to see. Hey, they’re popular for a reason!
Next time someone tries to shame you for wanting to climb the Eiffel Tower when you’re in Paris, don’t let them. Goals like that may be a part of your bucket list and there’s nothing wrong with them, no matter how many people also want to do it. Just because something is popular doesn’t mean it’s bad, even though we’re used to believing that the real gems are hidden from the eye of the public.
Your vacation is your time to rest and do what you love and if visiting only the major tourist attractions brings you joy, then simply do it.
