Tierra del Fuego island is one of the most remote spots in South America. Split in two by a border, you can hop between the Chilean and the Argentinean side of Tierra del Fuego. It is often said that once you’ve reached this secluded corner of the Andes you’ve truly reached the end of the world. But in fact, Tierra del Fuego offers an epic journey through evergreen forests and forgotten fjords. Here are some of the spots you shouldn’t miss.

The Pinguino Rey Park

Parque Pinguino Rey is home to the only colony of king penguins outside the subarctic islands. It all started as a group of right seemingly lost penguins that washed up the horse in 2010. Today, Tierra del Fuego is home to a colony of nearly 100 penguins thanks to the creation of this private park.

Karukinka National Park

On this 300,000 hectare reserve, you can ding culpeo foxes, tuco-tucos, and guanacos as well as many other unique animals roaming around. Karukinka offers a basic guesthouse, as well as 6 domes and 10 camping sites.

Cape Horn

A boat ride through the Beagle Channel will take you to one of the most iconic places in Tierra del Fuego, Cape Horn. Here, you can gaze out at the place where the Atlantic meets the Pacific.

What place comes to mind when you think about penguins? While Antarctica is probably the answer to this question, Earth’s most untouched continent isn’t the only place in the Southern Hemisphere where these cute black and white creatures can be seen.

If you’re looking to see penguins in the wild and in person, here are three unexpected places where you can also travel to check them out.

Cape Town, South Africa

Yep, that’s right — you can find penguins in Africa if you travel to Cape Town! This world-famous city is the home of penguin colonies on several of its beautiful beaches, which provide an almost unbelievable sight for tourists to see.

Tierra del Fuego, Argentina

You might think more about wine and steak when you think about Argentina, but by traveling to the southernmost tip of this South American country, you will be able to come face-to-face with Magellanic penguins, a species native to the region.

. . #estanciaargentina #pinguino #isla #pinguinera #pinguinosargentinos #fauna #faunalibre #faunaargentina #argentina #naturaleza #natural #turismo #turismonacionar #turismoresponsable

Melbourne, Australia

It might seem hard to believe, but you can actually find penguins lounging on the beaches of Australia’s southern coast as well. Fairy penguins, a small and extremely cute species, are particularly numerous in the natural reserves and islands near the city of Melbourne.

Every traveler dreams of extremes: the tallest mountains; the biggest cities; the longest rivers. If you want to visit the southernmost city in the world, it is surprisingly easy to get to and has plenty of things to do as well.

What Ushuaia, Argentina is most famous for is being the jumping-off point of tours to Antarctica. There are plenty of Antarctica trips here, from 5-star cruises to cheaper options, but if this expensive trip isn’t in your budget then soak in the excitement of the explorers coming and going from the docks and shops.

The experience isn’t complete without seeing the Les Eclaireurs Lighthouse in the Beagle Channel. The lighthouse is an icon of the southernmost tip and comes with incredible views and wildlife, especially birds.

Lastly, the weather in Ushuaia creates unique nature in and around the city. It never gets above 62° Fahrenheit, and with lots of rain, you can find lush National Parks and unique views of the bay. Martial Glacier and Tierra Del Feugo National Park are two of the most common nature outings, but mountain biking, hiking, and skiing in the winter are all available as well.
