If you only have 24 hours in Croatia, head over to Split, the second-largest city, for a combination of history and modern life. There are many great things to do, but if time is short, here are 5 things you would not want to miss.

The Old Town

Walking through the stone roads in the old town is a great place to start enjoying Split. The town is filled with historic buildings, cafes, and shops, where you can sample the local cuisine. There are also lots of open-air markets to enjoy.

The Riva Promenade

Take a stroll by the waterfront on the south side of the city. The promenade is parallel with the Old Town and it is often packed with people and activities. There are plenty of good cafes to enjoy a cup of coffee if you need to refuel.

Diocletian’s Palace

The city of Split was built around the palace ruins, so you may find yourself passing through parts of this complex on several points in your day. To learn more about the historical site, take some time to go to the museums, which are now preserved in the center. A guided tour is also recommended, to see the most impressive sections of the Palace.

The Bell Tower of St. Duje Cathedral

This impressive site has an interesting history and is a perfect way to get some great birdseye views of the city. Do check if there is any renovation work at the Bell Tower, as it might be closed to the public. It’s a long climb – but definitely worth it.

People’s Square

After climbing the Bell Tower, take a well-earned rest and chill in the People’s Square. This is a great place to relax and enjoy the culture of Croatia. There are also plenty of places to grab a drink or bite to eat in this large open square.

Split is a popular tourist destination that is easily reachable by ferry from the Game of Thrones-famous city of Dubrovnik. Split offers amazing beaches and historical monuments from Roman and medieval times, but also modern entertainment and vivid nightlife.

The Billa supermarket has been acquired by a food retail chain SPAR and the protected store is located in the historic center of Split.
