Located to the north of Barcelona, one of the most-visited destinations in the world lies a small city of just over 100,000 people which is criminally underrated—Girona.

This provincial capital is just 40 minutes from Barcelona by train, 1 hour and 15 minutes by car, and it also has its own airport if you’re looking to plan a trip solely to the city.

Girona is a traditional Catalan city which combines a fantastic old town with modern attractions and a beautiful setting along the River Onyar.

The buildings and houses which line the Onyar are one of the most characteristic sights of the city, as their multi-colored facades make a beautiful patchwork of colors along the river.

Another big attraction in Girona is its Old Town. Here, you’ll find the Girona Cathedral, which was constructed in the 11th century and still stands to this day. It has the widest Gothic nave of any church on Earth!

The Girona City Walls are another interesting attraction, as they are a rebuilt version of the Carlist-era walls which once protected the city from external threats. They can be walked upon to get a great vantage point of the city.

Finally, be sure to check out the city’s ancient Jewish Quarter, which features a museum about the history of Jews in the city. Called “El Cal” in the local Catalan language, this was the second-largest Jewish neighborhood in the region until the end of the 15th century and is considered to be one of the best-preserved in all of Europe.

What are you waiting for? Check out Girona as soon as possible!

Most of our conceptions of what alcoholic apple cider is are influenced heavily by sweet, sugar-ladened beverages that are popular throughout much of the world. Mass-produced, popular ciders consumed around the planet such as Apple Bandit and Angry Orchard are sweet ciders, meaning that sugar holds up their flavor profile.

Apple cider from Asturias, though, is totally different.

This cider is tart, funky, and hardly has any sweetness at all. That doesn’t mean that it isn’t an absolutely fantastic version of the drink, however.

Asturian cider is made from locally-grown apples, some of which are tart crab apples and some of which are slightly sweet. The two are combined to form the perfect mix to find a tart but drinkable beverage.

After the juice has been obtained, the cider is left to ferment and mature in barrels throughout a period of about 6 months. Once this process is finished, the cider is served cold in wide-mouthed glasses in small doses.

If you find yourself in Oviedo, the region’s capital, you have to go to the Bulevar de la Sidra. This pedestrian street is home to the city’s best bars to experience small tapas as well as the traditional experience of drinking cider.

Enjoy!

Located in the North Atlantic Coast of Spain’s Galicia region is a tiny town called San Andrés de Teixido. The village, with under 50 residents, is nestled within the verdant green sea cliffs which define this unique region.

This description might not make San Andrés de Teixido sound like much, but it is one of the most important pilgrimage sites in Spain due to its cult of devotion to Saint Andrew and its spectacular and remote setting.

The current chapel, which was built in the 17th century, is very bare-bones, but it has several interesting art elements that refer to the sea, as well as a shrine to Saint Andrew.

Various myths surround the town and the cathedral. One famous saying in the native Galician language about San Andrés de Teixido is “quen non vai de vivo, vai de morto,” which roughly means that if you don’t go while you’re still alive, you’ll visit in the afterlife.

Other traditions include a drinking fountain, which has three spouts. If you drink from all three, legend has it that your wishes will come true.

This unique chapel and town is a must-visit for those that enjoy religious history and beautiful ocean views. You’ll certainly never forget your trip to this hauntingly beautiful place.

Spain is a country that has a lot of variety within a relatively small geographic area.

The country is divided into 17 “autonomous communities,” all of which have their own cultural identity. Some even have their own language!

Here are our picks for Spain’s four most unique regions that you should check out ASAP.

Galicia

The first stop on our tour of Spain takes us to Galicia, a rain and wind-swept region in the country’s northwest corner. Galicia shares Celtic heritage with places like Ireland and Scotland, and it’s easy to see why. Galicians have their own language, and you can try delicious dishes like Galician octopus in cities like Santiago de Compostela.

Basque Country

Basque Country is a very unique place. Located in northern Spain near the French border, this fiercely independent region speaks the only non-Indo-European language in Europe. In addition, it has an elite gastronomic rating and features stunning, modern cities such as Bilbao and San Sebastian.

Catalonia

Catalonia, located on Spain’s Mediterranean border, has been in the news recently for wanting to become independent from Spain. This region also has its own language, Catalan, and one of the world’s most spectacular cities in Barcelona.

Andalusia

Andalusia is Spain’s southern region par excellence. Sharing a Moorish heritage with the north of Africa, you can find beautiful North African-inspired architecture at places like the Alhambra in Granada and at the Mosque of Cordoba.
