To be found in the heart of the Baltic region, Latvia is a hidden gem waiting to be explored. From its picturesque landscapes to its rich cultural heritage, this Eastern European country offers a unique travel experience. Here are three great reasons to pack your bags and head to Latvia.

Wondrous Nature

Latvia boasts an abundance of natural beauty that will captivate any traveler. The country is adorned with dense forests, serene lakes, and pristine beaches along the Baltic Sea. Gauja National Park, often referred to as the “Switzerland of Latvia,” offers breathtaking landscapes and hiking trails. Explore the pristine waters of Lake Burtnieki or wander through the stunning Kemeri National Park with its enchanting bog trails.

Historical Treasures

Latvia’s cities are a perfect blend of medieval charm and modern vitality. The capital, Riga, is a UNESCO World Heritage site renowned for its well-preserved medieval architecture. Roam the cobblestone streets of the Old Town, marvel at the impressive Riga Castle, and visit the iconic Riga Cathedral. Latvia’s historical sites, such as the medieval Turaida Castle and the charming town of Cesis, provide a glimpse into the country’s rich past.

Vibrant Culture

Latvia’s cultural scene is as diverse as its landscapes. Riga, in particular, is a hub of artistic expression, hosting numerous festivals, concerts, and events throughout the year. The Latvian National Opera, housed in a stunning building dating back to the 19th century, showcases the country’s passion for the performing arts. Visitors can also immerse themselves in Latvian traditions by attending folk festivals, where colorful costumes, traditional music, and dance celebrate the nation’s cultural heritage.

The Baltic is one of the most overlooked parts of Europe, but it won’t leave you disappointed if you’re a huge architecture lover. Charming historic buildings can be found in every Baltic capital, including Riga and Latvia, and here are three you should consider checking out during your visit.

Three Brothers

The Three Brothers complex may not look as much as first, but you’ll come to appreciate it once you learn the backstory behind it. This trio of buildings does a great job capturing the architectural evolution of Riga because every building was constructed in a different style that shaped Riga over the centuries: Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque architecture.

House of the Black Heads

The timeless symbol of Riga’s Old Town, the House of the Blackheads is one of the buildings you shouldn’t miss for the world while exploring Riga. Its beautiful façade is decorated with ornate sculptures and intricate decorations that will take you centuries back in time.

Riga Cathedral

A visit to Riga is incomplete if you don’t check out one of the most popular landmarks of the Latvian capital. This charming Gothic church proudly graces the city’s skyline, and it went through many reconstructions over eight centuries but always stood tall as the city’s timeless symbol.

Due to its relatively small size, Latvia is the perfect country for day-tripping, and its capital of Riga will probably be the jumping-off point for the rest of your journey. Castle lovers will be especially impressed by its surroundings, especially if they decide to visit these magical spots.

Cesis

Located about an hour and a half from Riga, Cesis is worth the visit because it’s home to one of Latvia’s best-preserved medieval castles, which has been around for 800 years.

Sigulda

After exploring the magical stone castle in Cesis, consider making a stop in Sigulda on your way back. This city is one of  Latvia’s top spots for castle lovers—it happens to be home to several buildings of this kind, including Turaida Castle, Sigulda Castle, and the ruins of Krimulda Castle.

Rundale

Built as a summer residence for the Dukes of Courland, one of the most significant rulers of the Baltic region, this restored 18th-century baroque castle will win you over with its lush gardens and a museum that allows you to explore its history.

Jelgava

Just like Rundale, Jelgava Palace served as a residence of the Dukes of Courland, and it happens to be the largest Baroque-style palace that you can find in the Baltic region.

Sunset (Latvian: saulriets), also known as sundown, is the daily disappearance of the Sun below the horizon due to Earth's rotation. The time of sunset is defined in astronomy as the moment when the upper limb of the Sun disappears below the horizon. Near the horizon, atmospheric refraction causes sunlight rays to be distorted to such an extent that geometrically the solar disk is already about one diameter below the horizon when a sunset is observed. Sunset is distinct from twilight, which is divided into three stages, the first being civil twilight, which begins once the Sun has disappeared below the horizon, and continues until it descends to 6 degrees below the horizon; the second phase is nautical twilight, between 6 and 12 degrees below the horizon; and the third is astronomical twilight, which is the period when the Sun is between 12 and 18 degrees below the horizon. Dusk is at the very end of astronomical twilight and is the darkest moment of twilight just before night. Night occurs when the Sun reaches 18 degrees below the horizon and no longer illuminates the sky. Sunset creates unique atmospheric conditions such as the often intense orange and red colors of the Sun and the surrounding sky.
