If you’re looking for a European vacation that’s full of culture and history without being too expensive, you might want to check out Eastern Europe. Countries around Eastern Europe are often not as developed or as rich as more common destinations like France or Germany, but they still offer lots of amazing attractions and history. Here are some of the most beautiful churches you can visit if you’re traveling around the area.

Budapest, Hungary: St. Stephen’s Basilica

Budapest is a common tourist destination for young people as it has a great party scene and isn’t very expensive. It’s also got plenty of awesome religious architecture, such as St. Stephen’s Basilica. This church, with its iconic dome, is over 100 years old. It’s still used today for Roman Catholic worship, but it’s also a common spot for tourists.

St. Petersburg, Russia: Naval Cathedral of St. Nicholas

This architectural mammoth is truly a sight to behold. With its soaring gold-encrusted domes and beautifully wrought facade, it’s one of the loveliest things you’ll see on your trip. It’s now a Russian-Orthodox church, so you can attend a service there if you wish. In the past, it functioned as a movie theatre and a naval museum as well.

Kutna Hora, Czech Republic: St. Barbara’s Church

This church is truly a relic of history, with construction beginning in the 13th century. The structure wasn’t completed until the 19th century, and frescoes from medieval times along with old gothic architecture are still on display. You don’t want to miss this church, as it’s also a world heritage site to boot.

Nikko is an ancient city tucked away in the misty mountains north of Tokyo. The ancient city is built in a sacred spot and boasts a number of architectural and religious treasures. Here are some of the sights that you’ve got to take a look at.

Shinkyo Bridge

Perhaps the most famous feature of this beautiful part of the world is Shinkyo Bridge. Built in the 1600s, the wonderfully intricate red bridge is a relatively new addition to the area. It said to be the gateway to Nikko.

Daiya River

A gushing river runs through the mountains, past the city, and under our Shinkyo bridge. It is worshiped in traditional Japanese religion. If you spend enough time with it, you can feel its soul and personality for yourself.

Shinto Shrine

Near the river and the bridge is an ancient Shinto shrine, built in 767. This is a beautiful traditional Japanese sacred structure used to house sacred objects.

Tosho-gu Shrine

In addition to the Shinto shrine, the city also has the Tosho-gu shrine. The shrine is home to a 17th-century carving which is said to be the origin of the proverb or The Wise Monkeys.

Sri Lanka is a land saturated in spiritual history, with a plethora of ancient monuments and meditative spaces gracing its shores. If you are spiritually curious or are a seasoned religious traveler, why not check out these beautiful spots in Sri Lanka. Here are four of the most spiritual.

Sigiriya Rock

This UNESCO-protected site has been a royal palace, a luxurious meditative garden, and a Buddhist temple. It sits at the top of a 1,200 stone step staircase and affords breathtaking views of the region. If you climb the final spiral staircase you can see the famous Sigiriya Frescoes.

Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi tree

Planted in 249 BC and cared for ever since by its Buddhist devotees, this sacred tree is said to have been grown from the tree under which Buddha attained enlightenment. It stands in Sri Lanka’s famous Anuradhapura region which is famous for its ancient temples and monuments.

Adam’s Peak

This 2,243m high mountain is sacred to all of Sri Lanka’s major faiths. It is said to have been visited by the Buddha, Shiva, and Adam, and offers a spectacular views over miles of tea plantations, lakes, and forests.

⠀ #prohope_travel #iamhope_srilanka

Jerusalem is known as the home to some of the holiest sites of the three major religions: Judaism, Islam, and Christianity. The modern bustling city, combined with the historic and religious past, makes this a great place to visit. At the heart of all this lies the old city of Jerusalem, a tiny walled section less than one square kilometer (0.35 sq mi).

What most people don’t know is that in addition to the 3 major religions, there is a 4th section of the old city — the Armenian quarter. By far the smallest quarter, with a population of around 2,500, there is still plenty to explore here, including the famous St. James Cathedral, a museum, and a classic Armenian restaurant.

The famous Jewish and Muslim quarters are crowded and filled with much history and holy sites. The Western Wall is the holiest Jewish site while right above it lies the Dome of the Rock, the place where Muhammad is said to have risen to heaven. Both quarters are filled with religious people, prayer sites, and old windy alleyways filled with shops and restaurants.

The Christian Quarter is home to about 40 holy Christian sites, including the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, the site where Jesus is said to have been crucified, buried, and resurrected. There are many different forms of Christianity in the small Christian quarter, and you will see pilgrims and priests from all over the world.
