From golden beaches to parties, music, food, and everything in between, Mexico is home to a wide variety of attractions that will make for an intriguing vacation. Of course, no Mexican vacation is complete without delivering into its fascinating history, especially as the home to ancient Mayan and Aztec civilizations, which happened to have pyramids of their own. Here are some of the best pyramids to visit in Mexico if you’re ready for a once-in-a-lifetime adventure.

El Castillo

This stunning pyramid is located in the heart of the May city of Chichén Itzá, in modern-day Yucatán. What’s particularly intriguing about this pyramid is that it was designed so that each year on the equinoxes, a shadow of a snake would descend onto the pyramid’s steps – an ancient engineering feat.

Pyramid of the Sun and Pyramid of the Moon

In the heart of Teotihuacán is the Pyramid of the Sun and the Pyramid of the Moon. Just an hour away from bustling Mexico City, these pyramids were built about 1,000 years before the arrival of the Aztecs, showing how they’ve stood the test of time.

Pyramid of the Magician

One of the autonomous Mayan city-states was Uxmal, in modern-day Mérida. This ancient city is instantly recognizable thanks to its sprawling pyramid known as the Pyramid of the Magician. This pyramid certainly lives up to its name, providing to be an unmissable monument that soars over the trees, defining a city that stood strong for over 150 years.

A trip to Egypt is incomplete without a visit to the Great Pyramid of Giza, but this isn’t the only ancient pyramid that this country has in store. If you have enough time on your hands to explore Egypt beyond Giza, here are three magical pyramids that deserve a moment of your time.

Pyramid of Djoser

The Step Pyramid of Djoser is located on the ground of the ancient Egyptian city of Memphis, and it opened its doors to visitors in 2020, after a 14-year restoration. It’s the world’s largest cut-stone construction and it’s believed it’s one of the oldest structures of this kind.

Red Pyramid

The Dahshur necropolis in Cairo is home to several show-stopping pyramids, including this red limestone structure. The Red Pyramid owes its name to its reddish hue, but it didn’t always look this way—it was layered with white Tura limestone, and the red limestone beneath was uncovered after Tura limestone was taken to Cairo during the Middle Ages.

Bent Pyramid

Another impressive pyramid located at the Dahshur necropolis, Bent Pyramid is truly unique thanks to its irregular shape. This pyramid owes its bent appearance to the top section, which was built at a shallower angle to avoid the structure’s collapse.

The Pyramids of Giza are one of the most fascinating tourist attractions in the world. The highlight of any trip to Egypt, visiting these pyramids is an experience that you won’t soon forget thanks to the incredible history and amazing architecture that they feature. Before you visit, get familiar with the three biggest secrets of this incredible place in order to be more familiar with its magic.

How They Were Built is Still a Mystery

Believe it or not, no one is exactly sure how the Ancient Egyptians managed to build something like the pyramids before construction machines and modern techniques were available. Their massive size, geometrical symmetry, and complex system of tunnels and passages blow the mind.

They Were Used to Tell Time

The pyramids were built with the idea that they would also help tell time. The orientation of the sun related to the Great Pyramid makes the shadow fall on certain lines on the structure of the pyramid, making it an important tool for time-telling back in ancient times.

They’re Super Accessible from Cairo

While most pictures of the Pyramids of Giza might lead you to believe that they are located in the desert in the middle of nowhere, that isn’t the case! In fact, they are just minutes away from the capital of Cairo and its suburb of Giza, making them easily accessible.

Whenever we hear about pyramids, our minds automatically go to Egypt. Egypt is the home to around 80 pyramids today, but there’s a country that has around twice as many!

The pyramids in today’s Egypt were constructed a long time ago, by ancient civilizations, and such civilizations built them at other places, too. Some of the civilizations that built pyramids and similarly shaped ziggurats were the Mesopotamians, Sumerians, Babylonians, Elamites, etc. Today’s Sudan is home to over 200 Nubian pyramids built over a few centuries around 4,600 years ago.

The Nubian Meroe pyramids are smaller than the ones found in Egypt, but that doesn’t make them any less impressive. They are located on the east bank of the Nile River and are named after the ancient city of Meroe. Meroe was once the capital of the Kingdom of Kush, an ancient kingdom that once occupied the same territory that’s now the Republic of Sudan.

Those pyramids were built for the same reason as the ones in Egypt — to be eternal resting places for kings and queens.
