South America is a stunning continent, and has some of the most incredible landscapes and vibrant culture of any continent. If you are into your mountains, rainforest, and lively cities, South America is the place to go. Here are three of the best countries to visit in South America.

Argentina

Argentina is a country that is famous for its passion. From the tango dance that originated there, to the near-religious devotion many Argentinians have to football, Argentina is a country full of vibrant people. The city of Buenos Aires reflects this liveliness, and also has a European charm to it. Argentina also boasts some of the best landscapes, and the Andes stretch down its length, towards the stunning glaciers of Patagonia in the South.

Brazil

Brazil is equally as passionate about football as Argentina, and has just as much vibrancy reflected in its buzzing cities and lively samba dancing. The city of Rio de Janeiro is packed with fascinating cultural things to explore, whilst the Amazon Rainforest is one of the most incredible natural wonders of the world.

Peru

Peru has some of the most incredible landscapes in the world, most famously epitomised by Machu Picchu, the remains of a lost city built high up in the Andes. The capital of Peru, Lima, is also a center of culture, and has a very unique feel as well as some interesting architecture.

Nestled along the border of Bolivia and Peru, in the heart of the Andes, Lake Titicaca is one of South America’s most treasured gems. The largest lake in this corner of the world, this breathtaking body of water deserves a spot on your bucket list, and here are three reasons why you shouldn’t miss it while exploring this continent.

Natural Beauty

Lake Titicaca will introduce you to the natural beauty of South America in a whole new light. Perched at an elevation of approximately 12,500 feet, it’s one of the world’s highest lakes, and its crystal-clear waters and surrounding islands offer a breathtaking panorama that has to be seen to be believed.

Floating Islands

One of the main reasons most people visit Titicaca in the first place are countless floating islands that stand out as its true marvel. Crafted by the skilled hands of the Uros people, these tiny islands have been constructed using the totora reeds that flourish in the lake’s waters, and they offer a unique look at the lives of this indigenous Bolivian community.

Historical Tapestry

Lake Titicaca is a great place to explore the rich historical tapestry of the Inca civilization. Some historical records even describe it as the cradle of the Inca civilization because the legend has it that the sun god himself was born here, on the Isla del Sol.

Humantay Lake is a popular day hike in the region of Cusco, Peru. Many tour companies will collect you early in the morning from your hostel to drive you to this spectacular glacial lake, surrounded by snow-capped mountains. Here are a few things you should know before signing up for a tour of Humantay Lake.

Prepare for a Wild Ride

To put it bluntly, the drive to Humantay Lake is terrifying. The single-track dirt road winds around the edge of mountains with a shear drop on one side. Be prepared for some seriously hair-raising moments when you round a corner into a herd of livestock, a jeep tries to overtake your minibus or a glacial stream blocks the way. If you’re not a fan of scary drives, this may not be the ideal trip for you!

Bring Warm Clothes

The hike to Humantay involves ascending to a height of 13,800 feet (4,200m). Even if it’s a warm day when you set off, it will be cold at the top! Dress in light, high-tech layers, and be sure to bring a warm coat, hat, and gloves.

Adjust to the Altitude

Don’t arrive in Cusco from Lima and head straight to Humantay Lake. This is one of the highest altitude spots on the classic tourist circuit in Peru and you need to acclimatize to the altitude before attempting the hike. Spend a few days in Cusco, drink the local coca tea, and take altitude sickness tablets if necessary.

Take a Camera

While it can be a long day with the early start, long drive, and two-hour hike, the views at Humantay Lake are truly spectacular. Bring your camera (make sure it’s charged!) and take some snaps of this stunning spot.

The Inca Trail is one of the world’s most iconic treks, winding through Peru’s lush cloud forests all the way to the ancient city of Machu Picchu. There are a few things to know about the Inca Trails before seeing them for yourselves.

There is a daily hiker limit

The Inca Trails are strictly limited to 500 people per day. Roughly half of these spots are occupied by porters and guides leaving only 250 permits a day for trekkers from all over the world.

The Best Time of Year to Hike the Inca Trail

Peru has two seasons, dry and wet. It’s possible to do the Inca Trails in either season, but each comes with its own pros and cons. During the dry season, which takes place from June to August, the chance of rain is significantly lower, obviously. However, it’s the high tourism season in Peru, so the Inca Trail will be at full capacity every day.

How Fit Do You Need To Be?

Although the Inca Trail isn’t exactly a walk in the park, you do not have to be the most experienced hiker to do it. Of course, the more fit you are the easier the challenge will be.

Oftentimes, a country has one spectacular tourist attraction that millions of people flock to, and for good reason. But these countries often have other attractions that are spectacular in their own right that simply don’t get enough love and attention due to their status in the shadow of the big player.

Moray, Peru’s hidden Incan gem, is a perfect example of this.

While Machu Picchu might receive all of the attention when it comes to Incan sites in Peru, Moray is a spot that is absolutely worth discovering in its own right.

Located just 45 kilometers to the southeast of Machu Picchu is Moray, an Incan archeological site that stands on its own as the most spectacular example of Incan agricultural practices that is left for us to see today.

Several terraced circular depressions, some of which extend up to 100 feet deep below ground level, are the highlights of this site. Archeologists have determined that these terraced features were built in order to cultivate crops such as potatoes.

The striking appearance of the remains of Moray and their deliberate geometric figures contrast sharply with the jagged, natural peaks of the Andes Mountains that lurk behind them in the region.

If you’re looking to plan a trip to Peru to see the wonder of Machu Picchu, make sure to make time for a stop at Moray as well.
